3 A NEW WEEK FR. JOHN VIEN Two weeks ago, Pope Francis responded to the current crisis in the Church of sexual abuse by priests and the cover-up by the bishops with a Letter to the People of God. I would encourage you to find and read this impassioned letter in which the Pope once again asks forgiveness, expresses shame, and vows that the Church will respond with greater fervor. In this letter, the Holy Father also wrote: Every one of the baptized should feel involved in the ecclesial and social change that we so greatly need. This change calls for a personal and communal conversion that makes us see things as the Lord does. For as Saint John Paul II liked to say: If we have truly started out anew from the contemplation of Christ, we must learn to see him especially in the faces of those with whom he wished to be identified (Novo Millennio Ineunte, 49). To see things as the Lord does, to be where the Lord wants us to be, to experience a conversion of heart in his presence. To do so, prayer and penance will help. I invite the entire holy faithful People of God to a penitential exercise of prayer and fasting, following the Lord s command. This can awaken our conscience and arouse our solidarity and commitment to a culture of care that says never again to every form of abuse. To this end, the Archdiocese of St. Louis has scheduled a Mass of Reparation at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica this Friday, September 7, at 7:00pm. Following the Mass, there will be a Holy Hour, Confessions, and the singing of the Divine Mercy chaplet. All are invited to join in this moment of prayer and penance with Archbishop Carlson as we pray for the healing of our Catholic Church. If you cannot make the evening Mass at the Cathedral, our MQP community will also pray for healing and reconciliation at our daily Masses that Friday, September 7, at 6:45 and 8:00am. Since it is also a Friday, it is also a fitting day to offer some sort of fast as a sign of penance and solidarity. Let us continue to pray for the healing of our Church, for those who have been abused, for those who have lost faith or lost hope, and for our bishops to lead with moral integrity and courage. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! Speaking of daily Mass, I d like to encourage all our parishioners to consider making daily Mass part of your prayer and faith formation. We know that the Sunday Mass is the most important thing that we do as Catholics, as Sunday is the Lord s Day, the Day of the Resurrection, the Day of Pentecost. But coming to Mass during the week can keep us close to Christ and strengthen the bonds of our community. I m edified by the faithful parishioners who come to our daily Masses Monday through Friday at 6:45 and 8:00am and on Saturday at 8:00am. During the School year, our school community has Mass together at 9:15am on Wednesdays. I would love to see more and more parents and families attend this Mass with our school children, but everyone is invited. How I would love to see more people attend all our daily Masses! Hearing the Word of God and receiving the Eucharist is of inestimable value for our spiritual lives. Many folks find this half-hour out of their day refreshes them and puts the day into focus. A simple homily can give them nourishment for the day. Many folks make it a Lenten penance to come to Mass during Lent, but really, Mass should not be a penance, it should be a joy! I d encourage you to consider if you can attend daily Mass, even just a day a week to start. I think you ll find it a boost to your day and your spiritual growth. THIS WEEK AT MQP... 5 Monthly Offertory Summary August 2018 OUT OF THE MESS. In biblical terminology, the heart is the center of the person and the source of every decision that manifests itself through deeds. Jesus thus links true defilement with the heart, where evil actions and intention have their beginning. Dr. Scott Hahn There s a lot that goes on inside of me that stays hidden. I ll give you some examples; see if you can relate. I m on a date, and I m smiling... but inside I m desperately counting the minutes until I can make my exit. A cute little kid is telling me a long story, I m nodding my head and saying, mmhmm... but inside I m running through my to-do list. My boss asks me to do something, and I say, Yes, I can do that,... but inside I m ranting about how much of a waste of my time it will be. (Never with you, Fr. John!) MQP Young Families Group 68,400 65,390 (136,000) (2,210) Year to Date Offertory Summary July 2018 though June 2019 YTD Offertory Actual 288,842 YTD Offertory Budget (306,000) Deficit (17,158) In all of those scenarios, what s happening on the outside is different from what s happening on the inside. That is what Jesus points out about the people in today s gospel. They have been completing the external rituals faithfully, but their hearts have been far from God. This wasn t just hypocritical, it was dangerous. Dangerous because what goes on in our hearts most often dictates the big choices we make. We can make our lives look really great on the outside but, if the inside is a mess, that put together outside is an empty façade. Melissa Hunter serves as the Director of Faith Formation at MQP. She spends most days trying to sort through the mess of her life so she can see Jesus. You'll find her laughing at jokes that aren't funny and eating donuts when she's stressed.
