Baptism Preparation Class is offered on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm at the Rectory, and is required of first time parents. Contact the Parish Office to register. ANOINTING OF THE SICK: If you are anticipating surgery or are sick or homebound and would like to be anointed, please contact a Priest or the Parish Office. ADULT INITIATION: Adults are received into the Church through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil after participating in a process of Christian formation and education called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please contact the Parish Office for more information. CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE: Couples wishing to be married at MQP should contact the parish as soon as possible after engagement and at least six months before the proposed wedding date. At least one of the couple should be a practicing Catholic, registered and living in the parish. A program of marriage preparation is required. Please contact the Pastor or the parish secretary for more information. VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE: Any young man interested in the priesthood or any young person interested in the religious life is encouraged to contact the Pastor or to call the Archdiocesan Vocation Office at All Catholics are called to pray for an increase in religious vocations. Bulletin Deadlines are Tuesdays by noon. Please submit to Anne at asteffens@mqpwg.org ALL SAINTS DAY Thursday, November 1, is the Feast of All Saints, a holy day of obligation. Masses for the holy day will be celebrated in Church at 6:45am, 8:00am, and 7:00pm. The school and parish offices will be closed on All Saints Day ALL SOULS DAY Friday, November 2, is All Souls Day, when we remember and pray for our beloved dead. Masses for All Souls will be celebrated at 6:45am and 8:00am. Our annual Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated at the 9:00am Sunday Mass on November 4. At this Mass, we will pray especially for our parishioners and all those who have died in this last year. All are invited, especially family members and friends who are remembering a loved one who has recently died. During November, you are invited to bring a picture of your departed family members or friends and place those on the side altars of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph. Also, the Book of the Names of the Dead will be at the St. Joseph altar; feel free to write the names of your departed family member and friends there so that we can remember them in prayer during November.

3 A NEW WEEK FR. JOHN VIEN As we come to the end of the month of October, I do not want this month to end without noting that October is, among other things, Domestic Violence Awareness month. You may be used to me using this space to write about spiritual or liturgical things, or about practical matters concerning our parish, but I also believe that we should be aware of societal problems like domestic violence. I have served on the Board of Directors for Lydia s House, a local organization that provides for the housing, counseling, and other needs of women and children who are healing from domestic violence. Sadly, I have also counseled and heard the confessions of abusers, victims, and survivors and my heart always breaks at their sad stories. Additionally, during my years as a priest in different parishes, I have been made aware that domestic violence and abuse is commonplace and even accepted in different cultures. So let us say loud and clear: violence against anyone, especially women and children, is never acceptable, anytime! Besides my two brothers, I have three older sisters. When I was a boy, all of us would fight, but I seemed to fight more with my sisters. When our fighting and hitting and yelling inevitably reached our parents, I can remember my father saying again and again to me, You never, ever hit a girl. While my sisters would smile smugly at this turn of events, I would usually fume that life was so unfair: my sisters could hit me but I couldn t hit them? I didn t realize it at the time, but I recognized it later in life: my father wasn t just breaking up a fight, he was teaching me a life lesson. It really is never acceptable to hit a girl, to hit a woman, whether you are 8, or 28, or 48 years old. About 30% of women will experience abuse in their lifetime. This is an epidemic! The abuse may be emotional, physical, or even financial. While about 95% of abuse is directed by men toward women, I d be remiss without acknowledging that men are sometimes victims of abuse as well, and abuse is also present among those in gay and lesbian relationships. I know that there are victims of domestic abuse in our parish and in our community. My heart goes out to you in your pain and suffering. I want to extend to you concern of our parish family and offer our support for you in your struggle to free yourselves from violence. Sadly, abusers do not easily abandon their violent ways. They need to be challenged and held accountable for their actions. Some abusers will excuse themselves by blaming alcohol or drugs, or perhaps they claim it s the stress that makes them violent or the abuse they suffered as children. All these factors may very well aggravate their violence but they are not the cause. Some men even blame their victims, claiming that if their partners were better wives or housekeepers, better mothers or more responsible, they themselves wouldn t get so mad. Basically, they are blaming the victim, when the real reason for their abuse is their desire to exercise power and control over their partner. Most women victims of domestic violence struggle to liberate themselves from their abuser, but that can be difficult to accomplish. Often we don t understand why they just don t pick up and leave their abusers. But factors like economic dependence and fear can make leaving difficult, if not impossible, and we must not judge their lives or their reasoning. Unfortunately, our Church has in some ways been complicit in this epidemic of domestic violence. We have not spoken out against it. We have preached plenty about the permanency of marriage but hardly ever that no one deserves to be abused and that no one should stay in an abusive relationship. Certainly, abusers are quick to quote scripture to justify their power and control. They distort the Word by insisting women were created to serve men and that wives must be subject to their husbands. It is time to set the record straight! The Church rejects all forms of domestic violence and urges women to protect themselves and their children, even if that means a separation and divorce from their abusers. Our church must help to protect them and assist them in freeing themselves from the violence. As a community of faith, let us reach out to every victim of domestic violence. We encourage you to come out of the shadows and seek help! We want to support you in your struggle for peace! We want you to be safe and free, filled with love, joy and hope for the future! Many of you know someone who is experiencing domestic violence. Please tell them they do not deserve such abuse. Tell them you are concerned about their safety and their children s and they have a right to be safe. Listen to them and respect their decisions, but assure them that you will support them whenever they decide to leave their abuser. THIS WEEK AT MQP... 5 OUT OF THE MESS. Often times we like to think we know what is best for us. We will fight to get whatever that might be. In our quest, sometimes we forget to consider how our actions may effect someone around us. Other times we might feel uncertain about what we need or want. These times may cause us to shrink into a shell and not be vocal about what might be best because of our own insecurities or failure to see the goodness that may come from a situation. I m sure everyone can relate to both scenarios. I mean, we ve all been in a situation in which we stop at nothing to get what we want or a situation where we did not say what we need to say. This Sunday s Gospel presents both of these scenarios. Bartimaeus, a blind man, hears that Jesus was coming down the road and immediately begins to cry out. He knows that Jesus will heal him. He has faith! Those around him were telling him to be quiet. Bartimaeus has a choice. He can shrink away and not call or he can persevere in his faith. What do we do when our faith is challenged? Personally, I love these moments. Whether I m with friends, meeting new people, or wherever, these conversations always seem to find me. They ve been awkward, cold, strange at times, and others have been amazing! I once had a stranger cry on my shoulder following our talk about how Jesus brings light out of darkest times of our lives.
