JOHN VIEN Today is the Feast of Pentecost! The fiftieth and final day of the Easter Season! The Feast of the Holy Spirit! The Birthday of the Church! The message of this feast is beautifully proclaimed in the Pentecost Preface to the Eucharistic Prayer that we hear today: Bringing the Paschal Mystery to completion, you bestowed the Holy Spirit today on those you made your adopted children by uniting them to your Only Begotten Son. Yes, today we celebrate that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is given to each and every one of us, so that we may be the presence of Christ in the world! Do you believe that the Holy Spirit is present among us? Can you recognize the signs of her presence? To open your minds and hearts and spirits a bit, here s a checklist to help you identify the Holy Spirit When you have a great idea that just comes to you out of the blue that s the Spirit! When you are able to stand up and speak the truth with courage that s the Spirit! When you defend and stand up for the poor and the powerless that s the Spirit! When you suddenly get wind of something that you should know about and work at that s the Spirit! When you finally understand something that you ve struggled with that s the Spirit! When you have a feeling of peace, contentment, and serenity that s the Spirit! When you finally do something you ve been avoiding or find the strength to do something you never thought you could that s the Spirit! When you make beautiful things that please others: a painting, a song, a dance, a meal, a story, a garden that s the Spirit! When you are able to listen to someone well and understand where they are coming from and offer them support and guidance that s the Spirit! When you can pray with concentration and presence that s the Spirit! When you are filled with gratitude and awe at this world we live in and want to care for it that s the Spirit! It was St. Paul who taught us the fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, generosity, gentleness, self-control, modesty, and chastity. Whenever we experience these, we know that the Holy Spirit is present! Yes, the Spirit came two millennia ago in wind and fire, but the Spirit still comes to us today. We all received the Holy Spirit on the day of our Baptism and that same Holy Spirit was strengthened in us on the day of our Confirmation. Pray this week that we might see the fruits of the Holy Spirit among us here at MQP! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Many are away on vacations during the summer months. I d encourage you to keep up with MQP via our website & online bulletin; to continue to support the parish financially, especially through electronic giving; but also to experience and enjoy Mass at other parishes during your travels. Fr. Aaron, Msgr. J, and I all have some time away planned during these months. I will be in Chicago for a few days this week with a priest friend. On July 10-14, Marc Strathman and I will be attending the National Pastoral Musicians Convention in Cincinnati. I will make my annual retreat in Buffalo, Minnesota the first week in August. My big trip this year will be the tour of Italy that I am leading November There s still room on this tour, and I d love to have more MQP friends and parishioners join. If you d like more information, please be in touch with me. Have a great New Week! Page 2

Please contact Mary Reitz at or Jo Roesslein at for more information about scheduling a monthly holy hour with Jesus. Dynamic Catholic, Alive! June 4 Gifts of the Holy Spirit What an extraordinary event the first Pentecost was! Fortunately, it continues today as we experience the continued action of the Holy Spirit in prayer and the moments of daily life. We often refer to Pentecost as the birthday of the Church because it is the first moment when the Apostles formed a community of believers and, led by the Holy Spirit, began to invite others to become followers of Jesus Christ. How often we forget the power of the Sacrament of Confirmation that we have received. The Lord sends the gifts of the Holy Spirit into our hearts, giving us wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord. These gifts are necessary for our salvation as they strengthen our virtues and facilitate our cooperation with the grace of God in our lives amid the trials we face daily. Saint John Paul II prayed daily for a greater outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. archstl.org/dynamic Join the 50+ Group for 8:00 Mass & breakfast at The Egg and I in Des Peres after Mass on June 20. Anyone over 50 is welcome to attend. Bring a friend. RSVP to Mary Ann at mazimmerman@mqpwg.org Page 3

GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions & events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Parish Office. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. - It will pay to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
