Medicine and water are always allowed, and in cases of ill health, there is no obliga on. The Fridays of Lent are days of abs nence for all Catholics over age 14. Abs nence is refraining from ea ng meat. Let us remember and be mindful of this common penance as we journey through the days of Lent. LENTEN RECONCILIATION Lent is an opportune me to celebrate God s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. All are encouraged to go to Confession during the season of Lent. Confessions are always heard on Saturday a ernoons from 3:45pm un l 4:45pm (except Holy Saturday, April 20).

3 A NEW WEEK FR. JOHN VIEN SUNDAY, MARCH 3, 2019 Last week, I wrote about some of the history and tradi ons of Carnival, and this week Carnival comes to its climax with the celebra on of Mardi Gras! These last days before Lent are an odd mixture of happiness and sadness. We say goodbye to the joys of winter me and we look forward to the coming of the Lenten Spring. In England, this coming Tuesday is called Shrove Tuesday and another word for Carnival (the fes ve me before Lent) is Shrove de. Shrive is an old word for having your sins forgiven. People would get ready for Lent by celebra ng the Sacrament of Reconcilia on and by asking forgiveness of one another. Then they would keep the discipline of Lent as their penance. Lenten penance is a sign of sorrow for injus ces and an act of thanksgiving for pardon. That was the serious business of Shrove de. Another task of Carnival was the ea ng up of Lent s forbidden foods. For over a thousand years, most Chris ans kept Lent by not ea ng any animal products. That was probably out of necessity. The coming warm weather would spoil foods in storage. Also, late winter and early spring are the animals birthing seasons. By not ea ng animal products at this me of year, people helped a new genera on get off to a healthy start. Chris ans thought that by not ea ng animal products during Lent, they could be er resemble Noah and his family aboard the ark. They could help prepare the world for a new crea on. (Have you ever considered that Noah and the Ark is a perfect metaphor for Lent? Just as God kept Noah and his family safe in the ark for 40 days and 40 nights while the earth was cleansed of sinfulness, so God keeps us safe in community for 40 days and 40 nights of Lent as we are cleansed of our sins and prepare for new life in the waters of bap sm.) At Carnival, all meat, bu er, cheese, and eggs got used up in a final feast before the Lenten fast. Making pancakes and doughnuts used up a lot of the ingredients. Russians call the days before Lent bu er week. In some countries, the last day before Lent is called Doughnut Day or Pancake Day. (Our neighbors next door at Webster Hills United Methodist Church are hos ng a Mardi Gras Pancake Supper this Tuesday night!) The Irish call it Ash Eve. The French call it Mardi Gras, which means Fat Tuesday. In Venice, at midnight on Ash Wednesday Eve, a straw figure named Carnevale, whose body has been stuffed with fireworks, is burned up in a fire in St. Mark s Plaza. In some places, last year s Palm Sunday branches are burned with an effigy of Old Man Winter, and so Lent s ashes get made at the same me that winter burns up! Enjoy these last days of Carnival, and enjoy your Mardi Gras celebra ons! But keep in mind that we only enjoy the fes veness of Carnival if we are going to be serious about the discipline of Lent. Please plan to begin your Lent this coming Ash Wednesday, March 6, by receiving ashes and celebra ng the Eucharist. Masses on Ash Wednesday are at 6:45am, 8:00am, 9:15am (with our school community), and at 7:00pm. 5 OUT OF THE MESS. From Melissa Hunter, Director of Faith Forma on I love to pray. Except when I don t have me. Or when I think I can handle things by myself. Or when watching Ne lix is more fun. Or when I think the bad things in my life are His fault anyway. Or when I remember that me that I did pray and then felt like He failed to answer me. Or when I think I don t deserve His help. Or when I m tried. Or when I m hungry. Or when I m just sort of indifferent to the whole God thing. Or when it simply is not on the list of things I ve got to get done today Prayer can be hard, but it can also be easy. Prayer can be a lot of work, but prac ce helps. No ma er what other words describe prayer, it s always also beau ful. And so, as a Parish this Lent, we are going Into the Desert* for 40 days, and we re going to find Jesus there. We re going to listen to Him. We re going to respond with our heads and our hearts. Because learning how to pray is fundamental to our faith. Plan for your study now! Find the study on our FORMED Community page Download the FREE Study Guide Schedule a me each week during Lent to watch the weekly session Invite some friends to join you Set an alarm for Fridays at 12:15 PM and join me LIVE on our Facebook page Join Fr. Aaron as he leads a FORMED study each Sunday of Lent (star ng March 10th) following the 11:00 am mass in the Msgr. Lubeley room. I ll be praying for you this Lent: that whatever commitments you make to growing your faith will be frui ul. Consider joining me on this Lenten journey. It will be exci ng to see what the Lord has in store for our Parish as we increase our prayer! *Into the Desert is a Study on FORMED.org.
