John 6:1-15 October 2012 Four weeks to reflect, pray and make a commitment to the mission & ministry of Gustavus Adolphus (GA) Church for 2013! Three nameless biblical persons give small gifts by the world s standards, but for them, it is all they have. Through their small but powerful gifts, God creates abundance for all. What will you offer in return for God s great abundance with you? Sunday, October 7 A Widow s Offering (Two Coins) Mark 12:41-44 Sunday, October 14 Another Widow/More Bread I Kings 17:7-14 Sunday, October 21 A Boy s Lunchbox John 6:1-15 Sunday, October 28 Drawn to the Word & Commitment Sunday Worship gathered around the creation of a mural! Watercolor artist and pastor Paul Oman will create two unique art pieces around our theme of Loaves & Fishes one in both worship services. The biblical stories of when a little is a lot will come to life before our eyes. The graphic art for our Loaves & Fishes theme in October was created by GA member Kirsten Gustafson, daughter of Margaret & Richard Gustafson. Kirsten graduated from North High in June, and is now attending Hamline University in Saint Paul.

2 Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch From the Senior Pastor When a Little is A Lot! John 6:1-15 In the adventures of a young boy named Christopher Robin, A.A. Milne created a world from his son s favorite stuffed animals. In their conversations and exploration, Winnie the Pooh and Piglet and Rabbit and the others worked through issues that all children face: What does it mean to share? How do you choose between eating a thing you love most (honey) and what your friend needs from you (help)? What do you have to offer when a friend is in need? It is hard to be brave said Piglet, sniffing slightly, when you re only a Very Small Animal. Rabbit, who had begun to write very busily, looked up and said: It is because you are a very small animal that you will be Useful in the adventure before us. A.A.Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh, Methuen, 1928, page 84 In the exchange between piglet and rabbit, rabbit helps his small friend see that he is still an important part of the adventure. That he has value and a contribution to make. A crowd of people has followed Jesus to the lakeshore. Their attraction to him is so strong that in their excitement they forget the picnic lunch. Jesus leans over to Philip and says, "Philip, how are we going to buy enough food to feed these people?" It is a test. And Philip, who represents the church, replies the way the church often replies to a crisis: "We're done for. Half a year's wages wouldn't be enough to feed all these people." And then, as Philip continues to mumble, his colleague Andrew informs Jesus that a boy in the crowd is carrying a couple of fish and a few loaves of bread. "But so little as that," says Andrew, "is really quite irrelevant under the circumstances." (John 6:5-9, paraphrased by Rev. Charles Hoffman) Jesus sees the potential in the boy s gift of two fish and five loaves of bread the possibility of abundance, rather than scarcity! That all contributions make a difference no matter how small the gift, or how small the giver. Because of the Jesus factor. As we do in our weekly celebration of holy communion, Jesus gave thanks for the meal and shared it with all. And, the Gospel of John says, they ate all they wanted until they were satisfied and there were still baskets of leftovers! Not one of us on our own is able to feed all of us. Not one. But God has created a world where a single kernel of corn sprouts and produces a stalk with two ears of corn. And each ear of corn grows an average of 700 kernels of corn! That s a ratio of 1:1400! We don t make that happen, we only help what God has already begun. In between the disciples claim, Here is what little we have, and Here are twelve baskets of leftovers, is the Jesus factor. We spend too much of our lives on the edges of what God has to offer and we are tentative, fearful, skeptical. The story of Jesus and the boy with loaves and fishes challenges us to take seriously the Jesus factor that with our usefulness and our gifts, joined with the gifts of others, the Mission of Jesus Christ is made known to the world. 3 October 2012 Page 3 Pastor Phil s Top 10 List (Actually Top Seven; there is only so much room) By the time you read this October newsletter, my time at GA will be ending so this is my last chance to get a word in with you (!!!). What I want you to know is that I am so thankful to God for these months I have been able to spend here with you and experience the rich life of faith here at GA. Therefore, as we part, I am going to leave you with my top seven list of those things that I have experienced at GA for which I am especially grateful to God! (These are not in any order, except number one is truly number one.) I thank God for #7 your gift of hospitality. I experienced that gift as you graciously welcomed me among you and I have heard it from so many people: The reason I am here is because of the welcome I received. So KEEP IT UP and STEP IT UP. Christ-like hospitality is not only an attitude; it is an intentional awareness of being receptive to others. #6 your generosity. From GA s rich history, I have come to learn of all the ways people, including you, have given generously of yourselves, your time, and your treasures to build and grow the ministry here. SO KEEP IT UP and STEP IT UP. Financially, this is a challenging time, but know that digging deep and giving generously has never been easy. It is, however, the faithful response of those who know and seek to share God s never-failing love. #5 the opportunity to be a partner in ministry with Pastor Bonnie. What a gifted and faithful senior pastor you have! I am amazed by her passion for the Gospel, her deep compassion for people, and her courageous leadership skills. But she cannot do ministry here without your prayers, your support, and your courage in faith. SO KEEP IT UP and STEP IT UP. Continue to support her and one another as the journey unfolds. #4 the uplifting worship life at GA. Thank you for letting me preach and lead worship in a place with such rich tradition of worship in the sanctuary, but a place that also offers the love of Christ in a more informal, contemporary setting in Luther Hall. In our complex, ever-changing world, both of those worship settings have great value, so KEEP IT UP and STEP IT UP. Be both faithful and creative, and never stop making worship the centerpiece of congregational life. #3 the staff and lay leaders. I can honestly say that I love coming to work here each day and that is because of the marvelous people with whom I have the opportunity to work, not only the staff (and you know their gifts!), but the amazing people who offer themselves in leadership and service. KEEP IT UP and STEP IT UP. Always be asking yourself how God can use you in the mission of GA. #2 the remarkable facility. GA has the blessing of a large and inviting facility. GA also has the challenge of a large and inviting facility! Yikes! There is a huge mortgage and all the ongoing care. So KEEP IT UP (literally) and STEP IT UP (with outsidethe-box ideas for use). And whatever the challenges that come, let it always be a place that offers life and hope to all people. And number 1? Well, that s easy! I thank God for YOU, for a community of ordinary people in fact, a community of sinners (!), but sinners redeemed by a loving God who gather around the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ and seek to do the extraordinary work of proclaiming and living that out for the sake of the world. So KEEP IT UP and I am confident God will STEP IT UP for you! Blessings in Christ, Pastor Phil

6 Page 6 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Global Mission The Joy of Missions I will not repeat the material I covered in the August issue about the land of Bangladesh in preparation for our mission event. I trust you gained some insight into the work of Lutheran HealthCare Bangladesh by visiting with Joe Slater, President of LHC-B, at the table and by being involved in the Bites for Bangladesh. The support you showed during the food frenzy in the Gathering Area was inspiring! A big shout-out of THANKS goes to over twenty folks that donated their specialty food item. A nice variety for the palates of all! I am reasonably certain you tried something you may not have had before! It is so much fun to see all ages being a part of missions! We experienced the JOY of sharing our food item the JOY of having someone eat it the JOY of taste-testing so many different foods but best of all is the JOY in being a part in helping the mothers and children of Dumki receive medical care at the only Lutheran and Christian hospital in southern Bangladesh. The JOY of sharing Christ in a variety of ways is OUR JOY.and it will bring JOY to the mothers and children who receive medical care. Transition Team Update On Sunday, September 30, GA s Transition Team presented its preliminary report to the congregation in a Town Hall meeting between services. Their recommendations may be read online on the website. This report will also be sent to congregation households with the Loaves & Fishes 2013 commitment packets. Important: On Sunday, November 11, Saint Paul Area Synod Bishop Peter Rogness and Rev. Paul Erickson will be with us to receive our congregation profile. This document is the result of research and input obtained by our Transition Team. After this presentation, we will move into the call process for a new associate pastor. Loaves & Fishes Prayer Miraculous One, our own needs and the needs of this world can overwhelm us. We question if anything can be done. We become paralyzed with despair and fear. Forgive us and heal us. Thank you for the examples of these nameless ones two widows and a little boy. They trust you and they act. They had little, but in your hands it is honored and it is more than enough. Give us their faith and courage. Help us to trust you beyond what we can see or imagine. We ask this in the strong name of Jesus, who makes all things possible and all things new. Amen. ~ Lisa Ann Moss Degrenia Blessings and JOY! Jean Schwartz, Global Mission Chair

To all the chefs and bakers who created their best for our Bites for Bangladesh event on September 16 thank you for your delicious treats to benefit Lutheran Healthcare Bangladesh! And we appreciate all the donations received to support quality and accessible medical services to women and children in this densely populated country in south Asia. To volunteers from GA who worked packaging nutritionally-balanced meals at Feed My Starving Children in Eagan on September 21, and to Lindsay Lowther for organizing our work! (a new hymn we will sing this month in the 9:00am service) "Where is bread?" the great crowd murmured Thousands strong, yet all in need. "Where is bread?" your people wondered, Faced with such a crowd to feed. Who, Lord Jesus, could have guessed it? One small boy brought food to share. Taking what he gave, you blessed it; All were fed, with much to spare. Where is bread? We know their yearning; Every day, we wish for more. God, in time, we're slowly learning: All we own can make us poor. Our possessions can possess us, Leaving hunger deep inside. Christ our Bread, come now and bless us; At your feast, we're satisfied. "Where is bread?" the call is rising; Millions cry who must be fed. God, your answer seems surprising: "You, my Church, you give them bread." Bread to fill each hungry spirit, Bread for hungry stomachs, too! Give us bread and help us share it. Richly blest, may we serve you.
