In the darkness of this time of the year, we set aside time for reflection, meditation and prayer. The 40 days of Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on the eve of Easter, have traditionally been a time of preparation and instruction about our need for God, and how we respond to God s love for us in Jesus Christ. It may be a time to take on a new spiritual discipline to improve your life, or to let go of something that encourages you to remember the sacrifice of Christ. Lenten Theme: Sharing the Stories that Share in the Story Weekly Lenten Worship and Dinners 5:00pm 6:00pm 6:50pm Soup Supper Book Discussion Groups Reflective Evening Vespers in the Chapel For Evening Vespers, GA members will share a personal story related to Lenten themes from the Gospel readings each week: Wilderness/Temptation Revelation Repentence/Mercy Wandering/Returning Preparing for Death Holy Week & Easter for 2013 Holy Week includes special services, beginning with Palm Sunday, March 24, 9:00 & 11:15am Maundy Thursday, March 28, 10:30am & 6:50pm Good Friday, March 29, 7:00am Men s Worship, 10:30am Children s Worship, 6:50pm Tenebrae Service Good Friday, Tenebrae Service March 29, 6:50pm Annual traditional Temebrae service led by the Chancel Choir. The worship experience focuses on the events of Holy Week and the Crucifixion through choir anthems and other musical offerings, hymns, scripture narration and selected appropriate readings. As candles are extinguished and the sanctuary lights gradually dim, the environment moves from light to total darkness. This moving service provides a time for quiet reflection and has remained an important step in the annual pilgrimage through the period of Lent culminating in the Easter experience. Easter Sunday is on March 31, Worship Service times are at 8:00am, 9:30am, & 11:00am, all services will be in the sanctuary with communion.

2 Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Senior Pastor Column Remember As you read this edition of our newsletter, I will be in Tanzania with Nancy, and Carol, and Catie, and two other friends visiting our sister parish, Kipenzelo, in the Iringa Diocese. In the Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday, Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21, there are three disciplines (practices) that have proved useful for many of Jesus disciples. (1) To increase giving to the poor, (2) to increase attention to prayer, and (3) to decrease focus on the self: the idea is that such discipline opens up the self to God and to the neighbor. Our travel group is truly on a mission to live out all three of these disciplines as we visit our sisters and brothers in Kipenzelo. We ask that you remember us in prayer, as we will remember you in prayer. Remember is an often-used faith word. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy is the 3 rd of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8). Do this, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me, Jesus commands his disciples (and all of us) at the Last Supper. But how can I remember events at which I was not present? I was not at Mt. Sinai when Moses brought the Ten Commandments to God s people. And we were not at the table in the Upper Room the night before Jesus was betrayed, when he washed the feet of his disciples and shared his last meal with them. But it is God s holy inspiration and imagination that connects us to remembering God s promises, God s commandments, and God s mercy and grace present in Jesus body and blood in the Last Supper. In holy imagination, we sit around a single table and receive nourishment from Jesus himself. We look into one another's faces and see joy and pain, worry and anticipation. And together we tell the story that unites us, beyond all our differences of faith and practice: we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Sandra Hack Polaski Frederick Buechner writes that this faith word, remember means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are (Whistling in the Dark: A Doubter s Dictionary, Harper Collins, 1998, p. 110). During our mission visit to Kipenzelo, we will remember you in prayer as we journey far from you, our families and our homes. We are carrying something of who you are with us, for you have left marks on who we are. Join us in the three disciplines of Lent that open us more to God and our neighbor: (1) To increase giving to the poor, (2) to increase attention to prayer, and (3) to decrease focus on myself. Will you remember us in prayer as well? 6 Page 6 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Sunday s Adult Education Anticipation A Letter of Joy for a Season of Reflection continued in March A G.I.F.T (Adults Growing in Faith Together) Sundays, 10:10am Paul s Letter to the Philippians has been called the letter of joy. During the five Sundays in Lent the Letter to the Philippians will be the focus for the adult forum. The letter will be divided into five sections, and each week a small panel will make comments to get discussion going by all who are present. The hope is that this will be an old fashioned Bible study with minimum (but sufficient) background comment by the leaders, followed by comments by anyone present. The topics are: Joy in Knowing Others (March 3) Joy in Christ (March 10) Joy in Living (March 17) No prior knowledge about the Bible, Paul, or Philippians is needed. The forums meet in the Fireside Room at 10:10am. GA 101/Learn More About GA Pastor Bonnie leads an informal conversation about Gustavus Adolphus (GA) and answers questions about what happens here. Attend one of these sessions to get acquainted with mission and ministry at GA. Meet her in the Library on one of the following Sunday mornings: March 10 & 17, 10:10am For those who are ready to commit to formal membership, there will be three sessions in April after Easter. Watch the bulletin for the dates. Child care is available for all sessions. Anticipation apprehension expectation acceptance. Those are words we all use or experience as we go through this life as a Christian. They fit so many scenarios, and currently they are words that have been a part of our Tanzanian travelers lives. There has been much anticipation of when this trip would really happen; apprehension once committed what is the travel arrangement, what is the food like, how will we talk when we don t speak the same language; expectation of really seeing our partners and experiencing their hospitality, going on a safari with real African animals, learning and experiencing a new culture; and the acceptance of knowing that the Lord had placed each of them in this situation at this time in their life and great things will come from it! After Easter there will be a program where our travelers will reflect upon this trip. We will be able to learn from personal experiences how these four words have impacted their lives. They return on March 7. Thank you to everyone for sharing in the fun of providing some barnyard animals for our Tanzanian friends, for the bags made for the Pastor and evangelists, crank flashlights, calendars, and other donations. As we keep them in our prayers, we too are a part of this trip. Now we can anticipate our part and the acceptance of the gift of shared ministry. Our South African missionaries, Rev. Tessa Moon, Jon Leiseth, Isaac and Sophia, are back in Peitermaritzburg, South Africa. They were back in the States seeking medical advice for Jon and an auto-immune condition. The children started a new school year in January; Isaac in 5 th grade and Sophia in 3 rd. Both are learning

If interested, you can follow their life and work on blog site: yagmsa.wordpress.com or the family blog: They are working with Young Adults in Global Mission South Africa, an ELCA Global Mission program. In reading their blog, one learns that they have very much experienced the same four words that started this article. The words are interpreted differently by each one of us, but wherever we are in service to the Lord, we go through these stages many times. Please keep them in your prayers. 9 March 2013 Page 9 From Interim Associate Pastor John Marboe I like fieldtrips, and I think churches should do them. Though it is not listed as a fruit of the Spirit, holy curiosity is a great characteristic of a Christian. To wander and to wonder with eyes, ears and hearts open to others invites blessings we cannot predict. I was delighted that over thirty youth and adults signed up on January 30 th to visit Temple of Aaron Synagogue in St. Paul. Rabbi Alan Shavit-Lonstein treated us to an excellent (and humorous) introduction to Judaism. He let us view the scrolls of the Torah and helped us understand their rituals. We were also shown a sobering artifact of the Holocaust: a scroll that had been rescued and partially restored that had been wrapped around a Jewish person and set afire. As we parted, the Rabbi half-joked that he would like to join with a Lutheran congregation for a lutefisk and gefilte fish dinner. Their office manager declared that she would never in her life eat either! I think it sounds fun. Anyone here good at making lutefisk? This first fieldtrip of 2013 was so interesting, let s do more. We have a great opportunity on Thursday evening, March 14. Our parentcongregation, First Lutheran on Maria invites us and others to come learn about their outreach to persons at the margins in our community. They call it Shobi s Table. It is a ministry tending to mind, body and spirit, providing food, medical and counseling services, and prayer. Let s go learn what that s about. Look for sign-ups. Then, on April 14th, Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs will be our AGIFT speaker and offer a guided tour after the second service to a few sacred sites of the Dakota people. Jim Bear has a ministry to Christian churches aimed at expanding our awareness of and appreciation for the people their stories and ways that dwelt on this land for millennia before our immigrant ancestors arrived. Look for signups. Curiosity is good. Let s get out there and learn from our neighbors In Peace, Pastor John March Fieldtrip Opportunity: Shobi s Table Shobi's Table: A ministry of spiritual wellness in the homeless community Come and learn about a ministry of radical hospitality among the homeless population of St. Paul s East Side. Led by Pastor Margaret Kelly, Shobi s Table is a Word and Sacrament community that has grown out of the Wellness Center ministry at First Lutheran Church. Join us on Thursday, March 14, from 5:00-8:00pm at First Lutheran Church, 463 Maria Ave., St. Paul. Participants will be invited to mingle with the Wellness Center guests, join in the community meal at 6:00pm, and learn more about the ministry from Pastor Kelly and other leaders. Become a fan of GA Church Saint Paul on Facebook! Update about Mortgage Refinancing At the Annual Meeting on January 27, the congregation authorized the Church Council to apply to refinance the church mortgage at a lower interest rate. The Council and the Financial Resources Committee have spoken with two Lutheran church lenders, and anticipates that refinancing will be secured in March.
