2 Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church Senior Pastor s Column In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed. Psalm 139:16(b) I write these words two weeks before leaving GA for my sabbatical. It is difficult to imagine the shape and rhythm of twelve weeks away from our beloved community of faith. Let me again express my thanks for this time for rejuvenation, rest and reflection. Our Lent theme of Sabbath as God s gift of rest has been a wonderful gift to prepare me for this time away. I have been reminded again of the many aspects of Sabbath, and especially the particular need for rest, and a break from the routine of doing for the blessing of being. The writer of Psalm 139 offers one of the most intimate psalms in the Bible. It speaks to God s knowledge of our existence as we were being knit together in our mother s womb. Of knowing what we will say before our tongue can form the words, of never allowing us to flee from God s presence no matter where the journey make take us. And so I spend this time in deep appreciation for this Lent and Easter season spent with all of you, grateful for the gifts you share so generously in response to God s abundance with you, and thankful for the gift of this time formed and given by God s hand. I will be back at GA on July 22. Pastor Bonnie Wilcox Senior Pastor Have You Remembered GA in Your Will? A legacy gift will help continue the 120-year tradition of mission at Gustavus Adolphus. New Orleans Mission Trip Well, it happened. We went back! The more you re in a particular city, the more it becomes comfortable and familiar when getting around, and you start to get welcomed back by the same people you worked with before. The St. Bernard Project welcomed us back and remembered a few of our faces from the last summer. Gethsemane Lutheran Church, who housed us during the week, gave us updates rather than an introduction. It was a great feeling. We got to focus on one house during the week, which gave us a new perspective. I think all of us really did feel sad at the end of the week, because we wanted to just keep working as hard as we could to finish her house sooner. I keep remembering all of the good ways that God works through us and through organizations like the St. Bernard Project, who are really focused on helping people. Thank you for all of your prayers and support. Lindsay Lowther

3 May 2011 Page 3 New Orleans Mission Trip continues On my second trip to New Orleans, I was disappointed to see that so little had changed since my first visit almost 2 years ago. The areas you see on TV, the French Quarter, Downtown and the Superdome are very much up and running again. Once you get a few blocks into the residential area you see that the people of New Orleans are still working to put their lives back together. Some homes have been beautifully redone, and other homes on the same block are still untouched. The number of empty lots around the neighborhoods is a stark reminder of how much is yet to be done. The sense of community in these neighborhoods is tremendous. Families have lived on the same block for generations and passed down a special culture, not to mention delicious special recipes. With the damage done in these areas, many communities are struggling to rekindle that spirit and many families have yet to come back to the places they called home. With our continued prayers and hard work, we can all do our part to help people like Ms. Moody and Mr. Lewis bring those communities back to where they belong. Andy Lowther How many boarded-up, brokendown and abandoned homes on your block or in your housing circle? When I walk west on Maryland Ave. from our house to 35E to pick up our car from the service station on Maryland and Arkwright, I see closely a number of rough looking houses. New Orleans has them by the thousands, block after block. We went to New Orleans to give a little help in the rebuilding. When I saw the need, I can say, the little we did seemed even "more little." Yet, doing a little on one house of Miss Brodie, was big and important, for her. I did only a little and for just one lady and her house amidst thousands of broken houses and returned home to our good house and more than enough knowing in a fresh way, God is Good. 8 Page 8 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church Global Mission News Save me from Faith Fatigue and Despair In Luke 18:1, we read, "Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart." If you are like me, feelings of faith fatigue and despair easily set in after hearing, seeing or reading news about natural disasters like the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and human caused disasters like the wars in the Middle East. The news is full of disasters and we watch them parade by day after day, month after month and year after year. Yet, to date, we have not been a victim in a human or natural catastrophe. As an individual, when I feel the faith fatigue I think of Jesus words, "pray always and not to lose heart." And as a member of GA church, the ELCA and part of the Body of Christ universal I may feel fatigue, but others stand strong, our church, Christ's church, all the individual church members collectively, in the world, are ready to bring help and hope, in the name of Jesus to victims in a disaster. Our ELCA supports missionaries and mission ministries in Japan, Palestine and Egypt. And they fund ministry projects in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. We are so blessed at GA. I am happy to belong to and be part of a congregation that supports world mission. Last month we were saying "God is Good!" We can still do that and out of our "More Than Enough Abundance," continue to support our GA ministry here in Saint Paul and also ministry that reaches out, through the ELCA, into a world of both despair and hope. Pray this prayer with me, empowering Holy Spirit, somethings I am overwhelmed by the statistics: the number of people in the world dying from hunger, war, disaster, and disease. Save me from faith fatigue and despair. Keep me persistent. Amen. Wesley Johnson, Chair Global Mission Committee Lyngblomsten Wheel Worshippers! Sunday, May 29 Families, couples or individuals and confirmation youth are invited to help push residents in wheelchairs to Sunday morning worship at their chapel. 9:30 11:30 am. They will present a program of popular and classical music at this evening concert. New Orleans Mission Trip Continued from page 2 This trip was a great experience. It was nice getting to know my fellow travelers better and it was a lot of fun seeing the sites of New Orleans. The food was really fantastic. I enjoyed working on someone s home and getting it closer to being ready for them to move back in. It was neat to meet the home owner and have a face to put with the house, to actually know who it is you are helping. I was saddened to hear the stories of loss and tragedy that resulted from hurricane Katrina. It was difficult to comprehend the power of the storm, the wind and the flood waters. What I found really difficult to hear were the stories of how people treated other people in the days, months and years after the hurricane. Instead of working together and helping each other, there were those who were taking advantage of others and their situation. It is sad to see so much devastation left from Katrina, still evident five years after the storm. So many families are still not reunited and still not back in their homes. There is so much yet to be done. It was such a good feeling to be able to help and it was a sad feeling that we couldn t do more. Laurie Johnson
