2 Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Thoughts from Pastor Amanda Blessings to you and your family this season as we welcome the coming of spring and journey together through Holy Week to the joy of Easter morning and the life-giving news of resurrection. The joy and meaning of Easter have changed and deepened for me as I have grown. As a child, I looked forward to the fresh flowers, warm sunshine upon my skin, a luxurious Easter meal at my grandparent s house and the challenge of hunting down Easter eggs that my parents had hid throughout the house and yard. As a teenager, Easter meant something more and new to me as I encountered illness and hospital stays. I pondered and wrestled with the big questions in life and faith does God exist? Why has this happened? Does God answer prayer? Is there life after death? What does resurrection mean? I learned, through hardship and nearness of death, what life and resurrection meant to me. As a young adult, I found myself in the pew of a Lutheran church on Easter Sunday morning, letting go of the grief over a former romantic relationship with my college boyfriend and praying to God for new beginnings. I left worship feeling lighter and freer, ready to focus on God s call to seminary and willing to say yes to new adventures. Later that afternoon, off on a new adventure, I met my future husband at an Easter brunch. As a slightly older adult, I can see how I have known God s healing and resurrection through the deaths of my old self, relationships, etc. I trust that the joy of the resurrection will always come, in my own life, for you, and in our life together as God s people. My prayer for you is that you will know the joy of the resurrection and the amazing gift of new life in your own life. If you are at the cross, if you are in the tomb, my prayer is that you may remember and know that God is with you in the uncertainty, worry and pain. And as we move into a new future at GA with the arrival of an interim senior pastor and coming of a new senior pastor to lead our congregation into our future as God s people who are committed to being a Gateway of Faith with our city, neighborhood, and each other, my prayer for all of us is that we know the joy of new life and new beginnings together. God is with us. Emmanuel, in who I trust. Amen. Amanda Simons Associate Pastor Tenants are a Gift to Gustavus Adolphus! The presence of tenants in our building is a complete gift: (1) our facility is used more frequently and efficiently (we are good stewards of what we have been given); (2) we learn from them about the Gospel and ministry today for their unique culture, and we offer the same to them in return; (3) we provide affordable ministry space for congregations under development who cannot afford their own building; and (4) the rent they pay to us supports our mission it is a bonus! We ought not consider ourselves dependent on their rent payments, for we are responsible for the care of this facility and the ministry we do in the name of Jesus Christ. This extra money in our mission spending plan (budget) makes it possible for us to extend our mission to our neighbors, and to be better neighbors to people on the East Side and in ever-widening circles beyond. Tenants carry liability insurance to cover any damage that accidentally may be done to our building. Let us give thanks for the relationships that have begun to grow, particularly with our custodians, who are always present when they are in the building. Let us give thanks for the relationships that are growing between the people of Gustavus Adolphus and these unique missions. And when the time comes for them to move to a new location, let us grieve their absence, and send them with our blessings.

3 Apr il 2015 Staff, Council, and Leadership Updates Page 3 Staff Updates We welcome two new members to our staff, both of whom are familiar to many of us, and who coincidentally, share the same first name! Maggie Kidnie is working ten hours a week as our accountant in the business office, joining Jennifer Schneider, our business administrator. Maggie has been a member of our church since She may be contacted at Maggie@gachurch.org. Maggie Novak is serving as our interim visitation pastor as of March 1. Maggie grew up at GA, and worked here as a youth director in the 1980s. She recently completed her Masters of Divinity degree at Luther Seminary and is awaiting her first call and ordination. The visitation pastor position works about 20 hours per month visiting members who are home-bound. She may be contacted at visitation@gachurch.org. Please welcome them warmly! Church Council Updates Debra Hogen served last year as our vice president/ president-elect, and has asked to postpone her term as president until she completes treatment for breast cancer, about six months. The Church Council accepted her request at its February meeting and appointed Christopher Stordalen to serve as president in her stead. Christopher served as our president in 2014, and brings important stability to our church. We give thanks for the healing Deb is receiving through radiation therapy, and for Christopher's offer to serve in her place. Financial Resources Committee Update: As Maggie Kidnie is now a staff member (see above), she has resigned as Chair of the Financial Resources Committee, and David Grefe has agreed to chair the group through June Leadership Updates GA Craft Fair Leadership Carol Ann Sideen has resigned as the chair of the GA Craft Show effective immediately. Picking up the mantle from her late husband, Carol has organized and managed our Craft Show with great energy and devotion. It has been a yeoman s effort, and it is time to thank her and all the members of the Craft Show Committee for all they have done these many years to invite people into our facility to sell their handiwork, and to gather for shopping, refreshment and fellowship. Watch the newsletter for the opportunity to help re-organize the Craft Fair Committee later this spring and summer. Thank You from Pastor Bonnie A.A. Milne in his popular children s book wrote the best words to summarize my leave-taking from this congregation: How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbyes so hard. And C.S. Lewis from The Four Loves, To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. Thank you for being vulnerable with me, and for letting me be vulnerable with you. We have done good work together in the name of Jesus Christ. That good work will surely continue, for this congregation is blessed with resources that the Holy Spirit will uniquely put to work and bless. Who knows what God will do through all of you next?

7 Page 7 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Global Missions ARE YOU AFRAID TO GO TO AFRICA? If you answer yes, I ask you, why? Are you afraid of what the ELCA Global Mission calls a "life - changing journey or experience? Do you know how many times I have traveled to Africa? How many African countries I have visited? And when I left for South Africa last December, people asked me, Aren't you afraid to go to Africa? There is Ebola there and ISIS! True, but not in South Africa. I didn't see any ISIS activity or cases of Ebola but I did see and spend time with South African friends Sharon and I hosted in 2006, 07, 08 and 09, when they attended International ISAIAH Conferences. Some live in Johannesburg, some in Durban and some in Cape Town. I saw them all. I also got to visit the ELCA missionaries that we at GA help support, Rev. Tessa Moon Leiseth and her husband Jon Leiseth in Pietermaritzburg. They are the support coordinators for ten young adults in Global Mission, in South Africa. As coordinators they provide logistical, emotional and spiritual support to the volunteers serving one year in the country. I also met three of the young adults. I met May, from Chicago, who wanted an overseas experience in social services and is living in a small town between Durban and Johannesburg, and helping in a church to plan and coordinate church events. The pastor and church leaders value her contributions. I also met Brittney, from Saint Peter, MN, who lives in a village on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. She is there to accompany aged, disabled or any person needing help with shopping or other chores. And I met Bret, from Detroit, who volunteers in a health clinic in Durban. Clinics are the first step in the health care system before going to a hospital. He is a non-medical volunteer. These young volunteers in mission, and others like them, must be between ages 19 and 29. They commit to one year of serving in culturally and religiously diverse contexts and are open to exploring and deepening their faith. Curiosity, flexibility, patience, a sense of humor and good emotional health are needed too. I was happy, on your behalf, to tell Pastor Tessa, her husband Jon and volunteers May, Brittney and Bret, that we at GA are praying for them, their mission work and service in South Africa. In their service to others, they are learning and gaining more in life experiences, spiritual depth and cultural awareness. The year spent in mission as a young adult is a valuable foundation on which to build a career. And according to Pastor Tessa, some do go on to a career in the church, some to a called ministry. Don't be afraid to go to Africa. Go with a GA group when they go to visit our companion congregation in Tanzania in Or save some money for a vacation in Africa. I have done both and am quite sure I will return to Africa again. 8 Apr il 2015 Summer Youth Mission Trip: ELCA Youth Gathering July 12-20, 2015, Chicago and Detroit Page 8 Fifteen youth and adults will travel this summer to Chicago and Detroit to attend the ELCA Youth Gathering. We will be meeting 40,000 other Lutheran teens and adult leaders in Detroit for the triennial youth gathering, focusing on the power of the resurrection in our lives and how to live out this good news in our communities and in the world as children of God. The Youth Gathering is a five-day event centered on the theme Rise Up! in relation to our steadfast hope in the power of God s resurrection for all of God s creation. The theme also refers to the city of Detroit, which is trying to rise from the ashes of its bankruptcy and the national recession. Our youth will be learning through intentional activities, worship and community service how to proclaim community, justice and story as a part of their faith. The goal of this Gathering and every gathering of our youth is to gather them together as a community, nourish and feed them in their faith, and send them forth into their communities to proclaim the gospel through word and action. We need your help to make it to Detroit for this once in a lifetime faith experience. I hope that you will prayerfully consider sponsoring a youth and/or adult leader through our Adopt-A-Youth fundraiser. The goal of this fundraiser is two-fold: 1) to raise money for the mission trip so that all of our participants may attend, and 2) to build relationships between the sponsored youth and their sponsors. As a Gateway of Faith, we care about being in relationship with each other and supporting each other as members of the body of Christ. Learn more about how you can Adopt-A-Youth and other ways to support us on the following pages. Thank you for your support. Let s rise up together and send our youth to Detroit. ~ Pastor Amanda Simons SUPPORT THIS FAITH OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR YOUTH: Adopt-A-Youth This is a generosity-trust fundraiser. We trust that you will generously decide how much to give to sponsor a youth for this once-in-a-lifetime faith experience. Your adopted youth will send you a letter introducing him or herself and share why they are excited to go to the Youth Gathering. We encourage each sponsor to share a meal with your sponsored youth before the mission trip, either on a Wednesday Family Faith Night or a Sunday morning at church. Sponsors will receive a postcard from Chicago or Detroit during the trip. In August we will invite all sponsors to join us for a special Youth Gathering Thank You in which our youth will share stories and pictures from the mission trip. To sponsor a youth and/or adult leader, pick up an Adopt-A-Youth form in the Gathering Space and/ or contact Pastor Amanda at or a.simons@gachurch.org. Please write all checks to Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church with Youth Gathering Mission Trip in the memo line for your sponsorship. 9 Page 9 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch SUPPORT THIS FAITH OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR YOUTH (continued from previous page) Pray, Encourage, Thank Please pray for us as we prepare for the Youth Gathering that we will meet our fundraising goal, that we will have open minds and compassionate hearts on our journeys in Detroit and Chicago, and for a safe and blessed youth mission trip. Encourage our youth and engage them in conversation about why they re going to the Youth Gathering and what excites them about the trip, their faith and our community of faith. Ask them about themselves where they go to school, what their dreams are, who they feel God is calling them to be. They re bright and mature and they have answers for you! Thank the adult leaders Lori Howard, Brad Nelson, Kristen Lynch and Pastor Amanda Simons who are giving time and care to our youth. Thank our youth for their willingness to try a new thing and to grow in their faith life. And thank God for the multitude of ways that God is at work in and through all of us. Calling All Gardeners (and Garden Supporters!) We are living out our mission as a congregation to be a Gateway of Faith with our city, neighborhood and each other through the value of building authentic Christian relationships through the establishment of a GA Community Garden with the St. Paul Council of Churches Farm-Faith Project and Hmong-American Partnership. Our shared community garden will provide a safe and communal gardening space to immigrants and refugees who are growing produce to support their families, assist the ministries of Shobi s Table and Merrick Food Shelf through the provision of fresh produce and herbs, and aid our congregation in growing in relationship with our neighbors and living out our call as stewards of God s earth. For the first year of our garden, we will build 15 raised beds (4 x4 ) on the south lawn behind the sanctuary and between Arcade Street and the parking lot. 12 of these raised beds will be for use by Hmong-American Partnership and the Farm-Faith Project with the remaining 3 for our congregation to tend and tithe the produce to Merrick Food Shelf and Shobi s Table.
