2 Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Note from the Senior Pastor...Nests It is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his garden, and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches. Luke 13:19 This is the size of a mustard seed. Quite small. In fact, if you had to keep track of one mustard seed, it would be hard to do. And yet Jesus says that this very small seed can produce a plant large enough that birds are able to nest in its branches. I recently came across a term that may come to describe part of our mission here at GA Church: that we are a congregation that provides a place for newer congregations and missions to nest. Nesting congregations are unable to afford their own facility, and so are sheltered by larger, existing congregations. In exchange, these small mission churches pay a nominal rent to the host congregation. GA Church is called to steward the facility we own to pay our mortgage payments ($14,000 per month), to maintain and care for the structure, AND to use the space well. Some of you have heard me say that I will know we are doing our best mission and ministry when we ve worn out the carpet! There is little excitement in having a beautiful facility that no one uses. By sharing this building with others, we help more and more people hear about the love of God in Jesus Christ. We currently have these nesting congregations and missions within GA: Lutheran Healthcare Bangladesh-USA Starfish Ministries/New Life Center Eben-Eezer Pentecostes Hmong Hope Community Church We also share our facility as an act of benevolence with these partner organizations at no cost part of our call to share what God has given us with the larger church: Saint Paul Area Synod, including these Bega Kwa Bega organizations working in St. Paul and Tanzania: Ilula Health Care Task Force and St. Paul Partners. Swedish Lodge, MS Support Group Boy Scouts, & Beaver Valley Camp, Canon Choir of Brass, People to People. This is exciting work! But it also comes with challenges. Coordination and communication about how we share this space is key. Relationships must and are growing between our staff and members and people of these missions and congregations. The more difficult challenge will come when someone in our community of faith has a need for using the church building for a ministry or other event and discovers that one of these other organizations is already using the rooms, or the building, when we wanted the space for ourselves. I use the word steward intentionally. We have been given this facility to share the Gospel. It is not my church or your church, no matter how we may refer to it. This is God s church, and I ask your participation in building relationships with our nesting congregations and mission partners. I seek your patience and conversation in helping us all learn how to share this gift as a tool for mission. And I seek your forgiveness and tolerance in working through issues of communication, language, culture and use of this amazing gift from God which you have helped to build! Our branches are able to give shelter to many! Pastor Bonnie Wilcox Senior Pastor

3 Page 3 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch From Pastor Phil... Come to me, all you who are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matt 11:28-30 In my personal devotions the other day, I came upon this Bible passage a reading that our family used at my mother s memorial service, Matthew 11: My mother died four years ago at age 89. She had been blessed to live a long and active, faith-filled life but her time had certainly come, for she had spent the last number of years sliding ever deeper into the memory abyss of Alzheimer s, and our family spent a long time saying good-bye to this beautiful, gentle woman. I had the privilege to be at her side when she died, and in that moment of her passing, I was filled with both sorrow and joy. I was drawn to the words of Jesus where he said, Come to me, all you who are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest for although my heart ached at the loss, I felt a peace and a sense of joy knowing that my mother was indeed at rest with Christ. So those words became one of the readings that shaped her memorial service, and as I re-read that passage the other day, I couldn t help but think of my mom. However, this time I was even more caught up in the words that followed in that text: Take my yoke upon you for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. You see, my mom was a farm girl from South Dakota, and I know that in her early years, back before they ever had a tractor, their barn contained a yoke. I can picture her father Oscar my grandfather securing that yoke on his oxen team, readying them to spend the day working the fields. I can also picture my mother, as a young girl, riding her horse out into the field, bringing lunch to her dad and brothers, and watching as those oxen were yoked together, sharing the load, combining their strength, doing as a team what would have been difficult, if not impossible, alone. I know this Bible passage about the yoke seems to be about you or me individually teaming with Jesus, being yoked to Jesus, plowing through the fields of life right on into eternity with Jesus and that is a wonderful image and a marvelous truth. Yet my picture this time was the image of how we, as members of a faith community, are at our best when we are yoked together, when we are not left alone to shoulder the load in the field. I am always amazed at the response of the people of God when there is a deep need among us, a death (like my mother s), a tragedy, an illness. It s as if the Holy Spirit rounds us up down by the barn, slips the yoke over us, and sends us out together to plow through what no one should be expected to bear alone. But it doesn t have to be difficult circumstances for us to willingly take on the yoke. What fun and laughter and joy is experienced when there are others alongside, when we are connected to one another, encouraging one another, learning from one another, keeping one another from getting stuck! Even at the end of a long day of plowing ahead in faith and life, there is thanksgiving and laughter for the teamwork that lightens the load. That s the picture I took from this scripture passage this time, and that s the picture I hope you will embrace these continues on the next page

4 Page 4 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch continued from page 3 Transition Team Update days as the family of faith here at GA. This homestead is a gift from God, and you and I are part of a family which has been planted here not simply to look around and enjoy, but we have been called to work the land, make the fields flourish, and celebrate the harvest. Holy cow! [Now there is a good farm expression.] With everything that is going in this congregation, I can clearly see how important and necessary it is to be yoked together in ministry here. The fields are too vast for anyone or even just a few to work alone; the days are too short, the plow gets too heavy. Alone we would soon end up stuck in the ditch, discouraged, and exhausted, and the fields would not be tapped. But together, with everyone pitching in, the teamwork lightens the load and leads to great joy in recognizing the growth and harvest that God has in store. I am grateful to be here these days plowing the fields with you. Thanks for the opportunity to do so. In this time of pastoral transition, I would encourage you to dwell in the words of Jesus at the top of this page, let them stir in you, and see where you can get yoked into the ministry of this homestead. Blessings, Pastor Phil, Interim Associate Pastor Have You Remembered GA in Your Will? A legacy gift will help continue the 120-year tradition of mission at Gustavus Adolphus. With the advice of your attorney or tax adviser, the following language may be added to your will, trust or codicil: I bequeath X% of my estate to Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, 1669 N. Arcade, Saint Paul, MN The Transition Team is off to a great start. Our overall task is two-fold. As a first step, we are embarking on an in-depth look at the mission and ministry of GA (who we currently are as a congregation, as well as what is ahead for us in the future), all in preparation for the second phase, which is the formal process of calling a new pastor. The nine-member team is comprised of GA members, both men and women, with ages ranging across the generations, persons with varying longevity in this church and other churches, people with a variety of skills and interests. The team has been meeting since mid April. On Sunday, June 10, we hosted an informational Town Hall Meeting following worship. As a team, we are taking a divide-and-conquer approach to our work by dividing into three small working groups each assigned to a task. Our Mission/Vision Team is headed up by Jenni Bayer, Diane Giovanazzi, John Haller and Julie Hutchison- Downwind. They will be looking at who we are and who we want to be as a church. Our Self-Study Team, lead by Emily Simone, Rick Howard and Bruce Pelava, will take a behind-the-scenes look at our demographics, organizational structure, and finances. And finally, our Staff and Key Leaders Needs Team, Loren Holmstrom and Kristen Lynch, will be doing just that - talking with staff and key leaders as to what needs each person's role fills and where there may be gaps. We are committed to serving GA and our faith throughout this process, and we want to include GA members in this important work, so be on the lookout for opportunities to share your ideas. Kristen Lynch is serving as chairperson of the Transition Team; her is athenasprints@gmail.co m. her (or talk to a Transition Team member) if you have any ideas or questions and please include the team and its work in your prayers.

6 Page 6 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Bits and Pieces Summer seems to be the time when we pull together family for a picnic or reunion, do some things that we don t seem to get to the rest of the year a time to treasure the gifts that we take for granted too often. Also a time to share ourselves more generously. Global Mission Committee was recently the beneficiary of a generous anonymous gift. This is not only going to help us support our mission goals, but it is unexpected, simply given through a generous heart for the work that is dear to that special person. No strings attached, just use for the Lord s work. We thank you for your gift! Travel always seems to be on the minds of those that like to experience new adventures. We had to postpone the last Kiponzelo trip, but those folks are looking toward another time. At this point we are looking for others interested in exploring a trip to our Tanzanian companion parish in February, It will be about two weeks of life changing experiences and being blessed by the spirit of our Tanzanian brothers and sisters. If you are interested in asking questions or considering this trip, please contact Pastor Bonnie or Jean Schwartz. Lutheran Health Care Bangladesh (LHCB) has used our facilities for office contact in the past. They have been experiencing some challenges and new ways of doing ministry as they journey forward. Their board held their monthly meeting at GA in May and three from GA attended. Our congregation has been supportive of their mission and the work they do for the mothers and children in an extremely deprived area. You will be hearing more as the GMC works more closely to see how we can be of assistance. Wherever you are this summer, whatever it is that you are doing, take time to appreciate the gift God has given to each of us to worship, to share our time and talents, and be that blessing that someone else needs! 7 J uly 2012 Page 7 GA QR Codes & Card Reader Giving, Smartphones & Debit Cards When it comes to giving at church, I am one of those people that do not like carrying cash or writing checks. I cannot tell you how many times I have walked out of the house and arrived at church only to realize that I either left the check at home or did not write it out at all. Besides that, we are so in a rush Sunday morning that I do not know who really has time to go to the ATM machine to withdraw cash for the offering anyway. So, I find myself at church with no cash and no checks but I do have my card. However, the last time I checked, most churches did not have offering plates with a card reader on the side. I want to give but I am unable because I have a card and my church does not accept card transactions. This type of witness has led our Financial Resources Committee and Church Council to implement two new tools for mission: Card Reader Giving and QR Codes. Card Reader Giving will provide the opportunity to make a one-time offering in the Gathering Area, or to purchase tickets for an event, or purchase a book, or pay a registration fee for VBS using a debit or credit card. Using our existing relationship with Vanco, which provides secure electronic giving through the Simply Giving program, you will soon see a station at the Welcome Center with a Notebook PC and card reader device. GA QR Codes You may have seen our GA QR code on our weekly announcements page in worship. A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode, which are starting to pop up on product advertising. With a smartphone app to read QR codes, one can scan the code and be directly connected with our website. You may wonder how this might be helpful to our mission and ministry. By scanning the code, you can go to our website and make a secure donation from your smartphone at any time. And in the future, we may develop other QR codes that will help parents register children for VBS or offer information to our neighbors about happenings at GA Church. This is very new technology with almost no cost and we ll be exploring how we are able to connect with more and more people through smartphones. If you have questions or comments about these new technologies, contact a member of the Financial Resources Committee (Maggie Kidnie, Gene Haugen, Merritt Linzie, Rich Englestad, Nancy Selander, Dave Grefe, Pastor Bonnie Wilcox), or staff member Helen McEvoy-Freese Club New Social Opportunities for Seniors! Primarily serving adults living or working in the 551 zip code areas, sponsored and created by Lyngblomsten.
