Join us for the traditional Ash Wednesday service of repentance and forgiveness. By receiving the sign of the cross on our foreheads with ashes, we are reminded of our mortality, sinfulness, forgiveness and eternal life; in one profound ritual. Weekly Lenten Worship and Dinners 5:00pm 6:00pm 6:50pm Soup Supper Book Discussion Groups Reflective Evening Vespers in the Chapel For Evening Vespers, GA members will share a personal story related to Lenten themes from the Gospel readings each week: Wilderness/Temptation Revelation Repentence/Mercy Wandering/Returning Preparing for Death Adult Book Discussions Sara Miles Take This Bread: The Spiritual Memoir of a Twenty-First Century Christian. With wit and grit, Miles tells the stories that constitute her migration from avowed atheist to a newfound faith, to pursuing a calling to feed the world s hungry people, finding her inspiration from the simple, profound ritual of holy communion. Copies will be available for purchase. Students and Mentors Discussions We will watch and discuss video presentations from ELCA World Hunger: real stories of suffering, survival, and sharing with those in need. Souper Bowl Sunday! Sunday, February 3 is Super Bowl Sunday, but it is also Souper Bowl Sunday in churches around the country. On a day when the world focuses on football and fun, young people across the country are quietly raising millions to help people who are hungry and hurting, by inviting worshippers to make a $1 (or more!) gift. This movement that began in a youth group has grown into a national, youth-led event called the Souper Bowl of Caring. GA youth will be standing at the doors as you leave church to collect money for hungry people. Drop a dollar in a soup pot as you leave worship. Your donation will go to the ELCA s Hunger Appeal.

2 Page 2 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Senior Pastor Column Luke 15:1-7 Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. 3 So Jesus told them this parable Luke 15:2 has become one of my favorite Bible verses. The leaders of the local faith community, i.e., the Pharisees and scribes (the righteous ones) are throwing one of their worst accusations at Jesus: This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them. Who we associate with becomes part of our identity, doesn t it? In Jesus day, to associate with the crippled, the dirty, the wrong-doers, the diseased, or the foreigner made one unclean. And the only way to become clean again was through a ritual bath in the temple (not unlike baptism) -- Except that this bath had to be repeated each time one became unclean. It was appalling to the leaders of the faith community for Jesus to touch unclean people (i.e., sinners), for they spent much of their time ensuring that they were never made unclean by touching or associating with the wrong kind of people. While our rituals have changed since that time, it continues to be difficult to touch or associate with people who are other than us however one might define that otherness. I find myself too often choosing to avoid a difficult person or situation for what it might cost the cost of helping, or the cost to my reputation, or the cost of understanding, or my discomfort with someone different from me. I can t help but struggle, too, with the disdain of a label such as sinner. Aren t we ALL sinners, unable to follow and obey all that God expects of us? Unable to keep ourselves pure? Who was able to sit at table with Jesus and NOT be a sinner? Not one. For all have sinned and fallen short (Romans 3:23). We are by nature beings who are always in a state of sin and always in need of rescue and healing. The leaders of the Jerusalem faith community thought they could create a life that was clean and pure and without sin. That by dis-association, by shunning what they could see as unclean or impure behavior, that they wouldn t catch sin. That they could protect their own purity. Their selfish protection prevented them from a greater sense of community, and from relationships of depth. Isn t that what is at work in our separation from people with whom we are afraid: People whom we condemn for their differences from us whether by the color of their skin, their difficult accents, their sexual orientation, their disability or illness? Here is what I have discovered in asking God s help to face my sense of fear, seeking the strength to worry less about my reputation and more about the need for relationships of depth. I find myself in need of a change inside of me to see God s bigger circle of community. I will be richer for it. I AM richer for it. Holy Week includes special services, beginning with Palm Sunday on March 24, then Maundy Thursday on March 28, and Good Friday on March 29. Easter Sunday is on March 31 more information to follow with times of worship services that morning. The Season of Lent The season is a quieter season of the church year. In the darkness of this time of the year, we set aside time for reflection, meditation and prayer. The 40 days of Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on the eve of Easter, have traditionally been a time of preparation and instruction about our need for God, and how we respond to God s love for us in Jesus Christ. It may be a time to take on a new spiritual discipline to improve your life, or to let go of something that encourages you to remember the sacrifice of Christ. You are encouraged to use this season to gather together, to examine your life and to strengthen your faith, always looking toward the most important celebration of our Christian life together, Easter Sunday. GA 101/Learn More About GA Pastor Bonnie leads an informal conversation about Gustavus Adolphus (GA) and answers questions about what happens here. Attend one of these sessions to get acquainted with mission and ministry at GA. 6 Page 6 Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Chur ch Sunday s Adult Education Mission Trip to Kiponzelo A Letter of Joy for a Season of Reflection A G.I.F.T (Adults Growing in Faith Together) Sundays, 10:10am Paul s Letter to the Philippians has been called the letter of joy. During the five Sundays in Lent the Letter to the Philippians will be the focus for the adult forum. The letter will be divided into five sections, and each week a small panel will make comments to get discussion going by all who are present. The hope is that this will be an old fashioned Bible study with minimum (but sufficient) background comment by the leaders, followed by comments by anyone present. The topics for the five Sundays are: Joy: A Certain Kind of Delight (February 17) Joy in Mind and Heart (February 24) Joy in Knowing Others (March 3) Joy in Christ (March 10) Joy in Living (March 17) No prior knowledge about the Bible, Paul, or Philippians is needed. This is for anyone who is interested in reading through a book of the Bible with a group and gaining some new insights about the Christian faith. Bibles will be provided for use by participants each week. The forums meet in the Fireside Room at 10:10am. In the church calendar of Special Concerns offering envelopes, February is the month of Iringa Diocese. It s also interesting that this is the month that we send off a team of missionaries from our congregation to strengthen the relationship between Gustavus and Kiponzelo. (See the group s info on page 3) In earlier missionary work it meant you were a doctor, a nurse or a teacher in order to be sent to a far off land to share the Gospel as you used your other skills. The work of our present day missionaries from GA will be to build relationships, listen and learn from our Tanzanian partners, learn about the other work being done through other Saint Paul Area Synod organizations such as Water Partners, Ilula Hospital, the orphanage, educational institutions, and microfinancing. Join in the Commissioning Service on February 17 th as we send then on their way. We know that they will bring back to us many stories, pictures and videos of their experiences, but it is the enthusiasm and newfound joy of seeing missions-in-action that I most look forward to. There will be a return program scheduled, so stay tuned. Recently we learned that Kiponzelo has been divided and that one of the preaching point has become a new parish. The Christian faith is growing so rapidly that new preaching points are being established on their own by people eager to hear the Gospel and form a small body of believers. The Diocese officials are having difficulty keeping track of all the growth. Isn t that a wonderful problem to have??? If only we had the same yearning to bring our friends and spread the Word. So our travelers will have many questions about the churches growth, and learn the names of

And they will be able to check out the corn plot and see the work of the leaders as they increase the yield in hopes of being able to supply more food for their families. THANK YOU for your support in so many ways as we send these members off. Our gift of animals will be a blessing to so many families. The thoughtfulness of gifts for the Pastor and evangelists will be greatly appreciated. The student packs will contain helpful items for their schooling. And the new indestructible Futbol (soccer balls) will be a huge hit with the young and old. They love to kick a ball! 9 Febr uary 2013 Page 9 From Interim Associate Pastor John Marboe Fellow Travelers, My favorite Lent story is about my Grandma when she was a girl. She was St. Paul Catholic so, as we all know, there was to be no meat on Fridays (come to think of it, I think in those days it was every Friday all year, so it might not have been during Lent but I never let facts get in the way of a good story). Anyway, Angela had a ferocious love of hamburgers and found herself one Friday afternoon after school with a little change in her pocket. She went to the hamburger stand and ordered TWO. Just as she was handed the juicy delights, her mother appeared from around a corner. Angie stuffed those burgers down into the pockets of the coat she had just been given for Christmas. Ordering meat was now the least of her issues I always loved that story about my Grandma. I think that incident cured her ever after of trying to seem pious. As I knew her, she did not give two feathers what anyone thought of her for speaking her mind. Sometimes this could be embarrassing for others in her family. Like the time my Uncle John, a standout goalie for Minneapolis Roosevelt, was knocked out briefly by a puck to the head. He awoke to his mother kneeling over him on the ice. Get off the ice, Mom he whispered between his teeth. Satisfied he was ok, she crawled back over the boards. Lent is here. A season for sustained reflection on the aspects of our Gospel and Biblical stories that focus on that which is sorrowful and painful, that which concerns suffering, death, and other kinds of loss. It can be an extremely soulful time if we let it be, a time of deep reflection upon our own experiences of loss and to ponder our own death. For only from that depth and perspective can the reality and inevitability of new life reveal itself. I began with a story, because this Lent will feature storytelling YOURS. On Wednesday evenings we will hold meditative and worshipful services in the Chapel, and the reflection each week will be a STORY told by a member of GA that relates to a Lenten theme. There is nothing more powerful than a personal story, for they are very true (even when the facts are blurred) because they are part of who we are, and they let us know that in this mysterious, often difficult and confusing, yet beautiful experience we call life, we are not alone. And that matters. Pastor John In honor of this 150 th anniversary year of the U.S. Dakota War of 1862, we at GA are tending to our own bit of conscious-raising. On Sunday, February 24, Rev. Jim Bear Jacobs, a registered member of the Stockbridge Band of the Mohicans will be our guest preacher at both services. Jim Bear (as he likes to be called) has the blessing of Dakota elders to tell this story, especially in Christian churches receptive to learning a history, long suppressed in shame, of what happened to the people indigenous to this land we call Minnesota (a Dakota word that means waters that reflect the sky). Jim Bear will also present to our Sunday School children and youth between services in Luther Hall. Jim Bear does not soften the story, but he presents with a heart of great love and grace. Then, on April 14, Jim Bear will return to present at our AGIFT Forum between services. After the second service, he and Pastor John will lead a tour of Dakota sacred sites in St. Paul, so that we may literally walk and feel the history of the land. Please watch for sign up lists to take part in this great opportunity.
