Sunday, September 9, 1:00 pm Lutherans gather together on this day to work on various projects, in several different locations throughout Adams County. We join with other Lutheran churches throughout the country, reminding us that we are churched together for the sake of the world. There are various opportunities close by. A complete list is available, either on-line at or here in St. James gathering area. There will be a sending at 1:00 pm from St. James and, also from St. Paul in Biglerville. Plan to join us for this day of service! St. James Troubadours Like Fine Wine Songs of Aging Sunday, September 23 at 4:00 pm - The St. James Troubadours are back in concert! Vocalists Wayne Hill and Dwight Michael accompanied by Michael Matsinko and Tim Braband will present a program Like Fine Wine Songs of Aging. You have heard many programs by these talented musicians over the years from Broadway to Love Songs, St. Patrick s Day to Civil War Songs. This program will unearth hidden comedic talents along with great music like: Sunrise, Sunset, Thanks for the Memory, Those Were the Days, You Make Me Feel So Young, and some piano duets as well. A surprise at the end of the program will again leave you saying, What will these guys do next? Only time will tell. You don t want to miss this show. Come and bring your friends. Remember parking meters are enforced on Sunday afternoons in the borough.

We, having been washed in the word when we were born in the font, return to it every Sunday to ask God to create in us clean hearts. Food items collected at all services the first weekend of every month, benefit SCCAP Food Pantry. This project is under the auspices of Social Ministry. Our Hands - see front page SEPTEMBER 15 & 16 PENTECOST 17 Peter acknowledges Jesus as the Messiah, but he cannot accept that as the Messiah Jesus will have to suffer. Jesus issues a strong challenge to all by connecting discipleship and the cross. Readings: Isaiah 50:4-9a, Psalm 116:1-9, James 3:1-12, Mark 8:27-38 SEPTEMBER 22 & 23 - PENTECOST 18 While the disciples argue over which one of them is the greatest, Jesus tells them the way to be great is to serve. Readings: Jeremiah 11:18-20, Psalm 54, James 3:13--4:3, 7-8a, Mark 9:30-37; PRAYERS OF HEALING at the conclusion of each liturgy. Next weekend s Fifth Sunday Servant Event will benefit Holiday Family Outreach! You are asked to look at the Servant Branch hanging outside the worship area (in the main hallway) and bring in an item the following weekend, September 29 & 30. Holiday Family Outreach benefits families in need by supplying toys and food certificates before Christmas. St. James Fall Festival & Blessing of Animals JOIN US SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, at the farm of Tom and Barbara Vossler, 665 Knoxlyn Road, Gettysburg. We will begin at 1:00 pm and plan to eat close to 2:00 pm, and then spend the day playing games, listening to music, and just being with each other! We will hold a blessing of animals, large and small. A pig roast will be the main course. The rest of the food will be potluck. Games galore for all ages! Music to satisfy most ears! And we will have a dunk tank! Which staff member do you want in the dunk tank first this year? - 2

JUBILANT CHOIR begins Wednesday, September 19, 3:30-4:15 pm for all our 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th graders. Youth Group follows choir. MARTIN LUTHER CHOIR Our first rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, September 16 at 7:00 pm. We will then sing in church on Sunday, September 23 at the 8:15 am service. Rehearsal schedules will be provided at the first rehearsal. ADULT CHOIR Singers who want to commit to the finest choral tradition at St. James, are invited to attend our first rehearsal on Thursday, September 6 at 7:00 pm. For questions on how you can find your place in the choral program at St. James Lutheran Church, please contact Timothy Braband at ext ============================ Baptistry Glass Panels by Geoff Thulin My intent behind the designs etched on the baptistry glass panels is to create a subtle, yet graceful and engaging backdrop to the baptismal font. Seen from the worship area, the panels help focus attention on the baptistry. Viewed from the hallway, the glass designs welcome one into the worship area and what is happening behind the glass. The sun and the rain echo the Creation window to the right. I have combined them, as light and water work together to create and sustain life. These natural elements also connect to Matthew 3:11, where John says, I will baptize you with water, but Jesus Christ will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. In verse 16, when John baptizes Jesus, the Holy Spirit descends as a dove. The dove also recalls Genesis 8:10-11, where Noah sends forth a dove and it returns with an olive leaf. The repeating wave pattern ties the panels together and punctuates water as the encompassing theme of the baptistry. A very special thank you to graphic designer, Gina Dwyer for translating my drawings into usable computer designs, and to Rowland Glass Studios for making the stencils and sandblasting the glass. - 3

4 Committee Profile~ A word about our Social Ministry Committee. Identifying special needs among the church family and the broader community is the mission of the Social Ministry Committee. Some of the many projects they are involved with are: Fifth Sunday Servant Food Pantry Habitat for Humanity LAMPa Sharing Ministry Benevolence Soup Kitchen Gettysburg C.A.R.E.S. Adams Rescue Mission The committee meets every other month, the third Tuesday at 7:15 pm. They would like to welcome a few more committee members to help continue this important mission of the church. Interested parties, please call me at ext. 203 or me at lpoole@stjamesgettysburg.org. Many Blessings, Lisa Poole, Spiritual Gifts Coordinator Caregivers Needed for Funeral Receptions Funeral and Memorial Services held at St. James are quite often followed by a meal and fellowship. This free ministry is available because of faithful members who are willing to give of their time and resources. St. James presently has THREE groups of Caregivers who volunteer as servers, to set up, serve, clean up; and providers, who make or purchase needed food items. If you would like to have your name added to a FOURTH group, please contact Lisa Poole, Spiritual Gifts Coordinator at ext. 203 or lpoole@stjamesgettysburg.org. We start at 10:00 am in Room 303. We will end no later than 11:30 am, but often we run out of things to talk about before 11:30 am. This year we will look at the Old Testament scripture text for the upcoming weekend. This is a time where everyone s opinion is encouraged and welcome. We begin each week by reading the chosen text and discuss what jumps out from the reading. Pastor Mike will add background information, historical and cultural contexts. Together we then explore possible ways the text becomes part of our lives. Each week, there are handouts in a tray in the Gathering Area for the next week. Each week s Bible Study stands on its own, so if there are weeks you must miss, please do not let a missed Wednesday keep you away. We d love for you to join us! - 5

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30-10:30 AM FAITH & FELLOWSHIP CLASS meets in room 209, on the top floor of the church, at the southern end of the hallway. Gary Shaffer is the teacher. The class enjoys fellowship and a light breakfast (provided by class members) from 9:30-10:00 am. Then at 10:00 am, the class discusses topics selected from the Wired Word, (which Gary s to class members for preview). Class members often participate in service and social events, too. All are welcome! EXPLORING FAITH meets in room 300, on the top floor of the church, at the northern end of the hallway for group discussion on various topics. (An elevator is available if needed.) 7 ST. JAMES DINNER GROUPS STARTING THIS FALL Do you like to...eat good food? Meet new friends? Or reconnect with old ones? Then the St. James Dinner Groups are for you! Enjoy Christian fellowship over good food in the homes of new friends and old. It's so simple! You'll be matched with a group of six to eight people, couples or singles, to meet in one another's homes. The host provides the entree, while the other participants provide the side dishes and dessert. Can t host? No worries--it s not a prerequisite! Need a ride-- transportation will be arranged. Know someone who is not a member of St. James but would enjoy the fellowship of our dinner groups--they can be included. Groups are formed in the fall and meet through spring--then all the groups join together for a summer potluck picnic. Questions--ask a member of the Evangelism Committee. PLEASE SIGN UP IN THE GATHERING AREA TODAY! Thrivent Action Teams (submitted by Gerry Lohuis) As a Thrivent member, did you know that you can lead an Action Team? What s that? It is a unique opportunity for you and a group that you gather to make a difference in the community. Is there a project that you would like to see accomplished for others? Take your passion and make it happen! Well how? All the steps and information can be found online. Search Thrivent Action Teams. 1. Pick a project. No ideas? There are 101 projects listed on the site. Packing food or school supplies for the needy, making quilts and blankets, assemble kits for nursing home residents or hospital patients just to name a few. 2. Follow instructions in planning kit. Set a date, gather a team, apply at least 3 weeks before your project date. 3. Once the project is approved, you will receive a supply kit including a $250 Community Impact card to use as seed money for your project. Comments: Oh, this is my first time leading an action team and it is confusing. Contact Elaine Milhimes at to walk you through the steps. I d like to do something specific for St. James. 8 GOD ON THE GROUND PRAISE FEST On SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, St. James is partnering with ten other churches in the community to sponsor God on the Ground Praise Fest from 3:30-6:30 pm at the Gettysburg Rec Park Amphitheater. This FREE event will include four different Christian bands, children s activities, hamburgers, hot dogs and more. There will be messages in English and Spanish and also opportunities for sharing prayer requests. This is the fifth year this event has been held, as St. James continues to help lead a community initiative for churches and congregations to work together in bringing a greater presence of the Gospel s Good News beyond the walls of our churches. Bring a chair or a blanket and join us for some or part of this community event of fellowship and fun! We need volunteers who are willing to be greeters, help with providing desserts, and help with children s activities, crafts and face painting. If you are willing to volunteer, please talk to Pr. Mike, Pr. Andrew or Mary Stevenson. Thanks! (In case of rain, this event will be in the Sterner Building at the Gettysburg Rec Park.) GETTYSBURG C.A.R.E.S. NEWS In preparation for opening in October,Gettysburg C.A.R.E.S. has hired a new Program Director and a parttime Volunteer Coordinator. Amanda Connor is the Program Director. You may remember Amanda from when she worked as the daytime weekend staff person for several seasons. She is looking forward to working with C.A.R.E.S. again. She will be a valuable addition to the C.A.R.E.S. staff. C.A.R.E.S. opens on Thursday, October 4 th. They are anticipating an increase in the homeless seeking shelter. St. James is scheduled to host the shelter from December 24 - January 6. Interested in being a Host Volunteer? Speak to Ray Hopkins. Our first volunteer training session for host and overnight volunteers will be on Monday, September 24 th, 6:30 pm in the Library. Can t make that one? Monthly training sessions will be scheduled through March. If you are already a volunteer and would like a refresher, you are welcome to attend. Ray Hopkins can answer your questions about volunteering as a host at St. James. All other questions about Gettysburg C.A.R.E.S. can be directed to Mary Stevenson or to Pr. Mike. MONDAY NIGHT STUDY will begin meeting on OCTOBER 1 at 7:15 pm at the home of Fritz and Faith Foltz, 38 East Broadway, Gettysburg. We ll discuss the book, Faith, Hope, and Love in the Technological Society by Franz and Frederick Foltz. Please the Foltzes if you plan on attending at fritzafoltz@gmail.com. They examine how modern technology creates an environment that significantly affects Christianity by reducing the mysteries of faith to manageable techniques. The body of their work analyzes the effects of technology on the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love, the triad that believers have used for a common narrative to understand and express their thoughts and experiences. They begin by looking at how recent developments have brought us into a post-truth era by removing words from their context in nature, time, place, and community. Popular theologies such as the power of positive thinking, the laws of creation, the plan for salvation, and the prosperity gospel reflect this change by gearing all for efficiently getting what we want and ignoring tradition. The authors then examine each of the virtues separately, finding that faith has become a risk management tool that depends on confidence in systems rather than personal relationships, hope is defined as the expectation that our present desires shall be granted rather than a vision of the future, and love has become an intimacy that provides escape from the real world and community rather than a self-denying care for them. Finally, the authors take a look at some appropriate responses. Franz and Frederick Foltz are a son and father team that have been writing on religion and technology for over fifteen years. Franz is an associate professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology where he holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Science, Technology, and Society and Public Policy. Fritz is pastor emeritus at St. James, where he served in an experimental co-pastorate with the Rev. E. Edward Keyser for thirty-five years

Old Business: June minutes with amendments approved by consent. Announcements: Fall Festival will be held on Sunday, September 30 at the farm of Tom and Barbara Vossler. New Members Class will be held on Sunday, November 4 at 12 noon with a luncheon. Treasurer s Report approved. New Members Approved: Alexis and Laiken Kennedy baptism 8/19 Greyson Thomas DeCola baptism 9/1 John and Lynn Fry transfer Meredith Clapsaddle baptism Executive Committee Report: Minister of Music Tim Braband addressed Council about the Organ Refurbishment Fund and Executive Committee motion regarding fund surplus. Motion dictates that the overage of Renewal Fund giving ($11,263) go to: Baptistry Glass Etching $1,377; SCCAP Tithe $6,500; Worship Area Renewal Fund $3,393; motion carried. Congregational Renewal Task Force: Updates on Capital Campaign Initiative and next steps from the Holy Cow survey. Kitchen Task Force: Storage areas have not been repaired, however, major cleaning has been completed, as well as reorganization of the kitchen and storage areas. Thrivent Action money was used for this effort. Cabinet replacement is still necessary for safety purposes. Endowment Committee Report: Committee moves for the second-quarter giving distribution from ELCA Foundation Endowment as such: 30% to Mission; 30% to Youth; 25% to Building; 10% to Music; 5% to Good of the Church; motion approved. Treasurer Karen Lentz will provide the dollar amount of each distribution. New Business: Security Task Force and Capital Campaign must move forward with a needs analysis of several pressing issues for the physical building. Church Staff met to discuss issues pertinent to the church office and safety protocol updates. Discussion to hold Council Retreat on a Wednesday evening--but no date was set. Motion approved to hold Annual Congregation Meeting on Sunday, November 18. Two new hearing assistance devices have been purchased for use during worship services. Committee assignments for new Council members were made. Good for God: Church Staff has received appreciation from congregational members. A one-day followup to last year s Staff Retreat with outside consultant, will occur again in the fall. Next Council Meeting will be held Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00 pm.

If you are in High School and would like to attend the Synod s Winter Retreat in Lancaster from December 8-9, please let Youth Minister Jess Smith know ASAP! Wednesday, September 5 th Middle School & High School Breakfast! Bring a friend to the Youth House (121/123 York St.) at 6:45 am for prayer, pancakes, and fellowship. At 7:10 am we all depart for school if it s nice the middle schoolers will walk together, and high schoolers will grab a ride from adult volunteers! We meet every Wednesday! Sunday, September 9 th : Rally Day and God s Work. Our Hands Sunday! Please join us for the first day of youth Sunday School from 9:30-10:30 am. At 1:00 pm, we will all meet back at St. James for a short sending service before heading to God s Work. Our Hands locations. You can sign up to participate here or at the table in the gathering area. Wednesday, September 12 th : Youth Groups Open House! All youth and their parents are invited to drop by the Youth House at 121/123 York St., between 5:00-6:00 pm to meet with Jess, Mr. Braband, and the Pastors; grab a Youth Group t-shirt, sign-up for different events, and get a schedule for the year. We hope to see you there! Wednesday, September 19 th : First Wednesday Night Youth Groups! K-5 youth will be with Jess and Mr. Braband from 3:30-5:00 pm, and then High School youth are invited to the Youth House from 5:30-7:00 pm for dinner, discussion, and fellowship with each other. Monday, September 24 th : First Middle School Youth Group of the year! We are trying a new date and time to best fit everyone s schedules and to give your group some one-on-one time together, separate from the High School Youth Group. Please walk over after school and we will meet in the Youth House for snacks, fellowship, and some discussions around current events and hot topics. You can arrange to be picked up by 5:00 pm (if you need to leave earlier for sports or other commitments, that is fine too!). Wednesday, September 26 th : Hoss s Fundraiser Night! Come out to eat after K-5 Youth Group to support St. James Youth Programs. The green cards will be available on the bulletin board across from the Church Office. Sunday, September 30 th : St. James Fall Festival & Blessing of Animals! Join us at the Vosslers Farm at 1:00 pm (eating at 2:00 pm) for an afternoon of food, fun, and blessing of the animals! This will also serve as a Youth Group Fundraiser, so please let Jess know if you are able to help set up on Saturday, September 29 th or can stay to help clean-up after the event on Sunday.
