7 St. James welcomes Joseph Carman, who is a first-year Gettysburg Seminarian and will be our Ministry in Practice student (formerly field education/teaching parish). He is a candidate for ministry with the Rocky Mountain Synod. He possesses an M.A. in Forensic Clinical Psychology and 10 plus years of professional experience in criminal justice/law enforcement. For the past six years, he has worked towards the creation of a nonprofit that seeks to harness the power of the arts in providing assistance to populations that suffer from trauma related issues. In doing so, he has brought focus to the plights of combat veterans, the homeless, and incarcerated youth. He seeks to explore and discern related opportunities as he moves forward in seminary. SEPTEMBER 21, 2016 COUNCIL REPORT Submitted by Craig Reber, Council Secretary Minutes/Correspondence/Announcements: Gettysburg C.A.R.E.S. Certificate of Appreciation awarded to St. James. Treasurer s Report: In comparing the budget to last year we need to compare our current balance with last September. Per Treasurer Karen Lentz, the budget is heading in the right direction for the year. Overall, giving was up this year! Committee Reports: Stewardship Stewardship asks that members of each committee consider thanking the people who have volunteered in/for your committee. Think about who you would like to thank and form a list of the things you would like to thank volunteers for. Make this a continuing activity. Thank you cards are already available in the church office. Finance James Lohuis has accepted the role of chair of Finance. Personnel Looking at office needs. While contemplating the budget, we are looking for an IT Expert and Program Coordinator positions at church. Both would be part-time in the office. Volunteers, who could also answer the phone, would be acceptable. The goal is to have these positions figured out and decisions made by the beginning of Old Business: 2017 Mission Plan: Stewardship will finalize the plan at their meeting post Holy Cow! Congregational Assessment Tool (CAT). They will begin communicating the results and next steps in late October. Addiction and Dependency Task Force Pastor Geib is looking to continue to develop the initiative and network with other existing entities dealing with the local problem. The next Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 19 at 7:00 pm, in the library. There will also be a Holy Cow! Potluck Retreat on Monday, October 24 at 5:30 pm, in the dining room. Council, Long-Range Strategic Planning Committee, leaders of Sunday School classes, and Church Staff will meet to review results of the survey and discuss our next steps. (It was agreed that there will be no need this year for a Council Retreat, due to the potluck.) $850 was collected for Administrative Assistant Katherine Johnson s retirement. In addition, there were thank you cards signed by many from the congregation. October 9 th is the date the gift will be presented to Katherine and her husband at their church. Rush Sunday has been finalized and planned for October 2 at 9:30 am in the gathering area. The goal is to get more people familiar with each committee and to encourage recruitment of first-time members to our different committees. New Business: Council discussed the date for the Annual Congregation Meeting. It was suggested to include a community luncheon to precede the meeting. Last year was a soup and bread lunch, followed by the meeting. Our ANNUAL CONGREGATION MEETING will be SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20 at 12:00 for lunch, with the meeting beginning at 1:00 pm. It was suggested to use a Thrivent Action Team to fund the luncheon, with donations from attendees as a thanks offering to the general giving fund. St. James is taking on a Practice in Ministry student from the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary (first year student). Pastor Geib has met Joseph Carman, who is on a non-ordination track at the seminary. (His introduction is printed above.) Joseph will be with us for one year as he decides the future of his career path. - 7
8 Creation Care Follow-up Ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you... Job 12:8a Here's another eco-friendly habit suggestion from those you provided for our tree last April. Have you been trying any of them? Are you interested in broadening your good sustainability habits to include a church-wide project for St. James? We're interested in getting started with fresh ideas and fresh enthusiasm. And we're inviting you to join us in planning. Please sin the sheet on the table in the gathering area so we can arrange a time to meet. Lessons of the Leaves: - Use newspapers as mulch (at least four sheets thick). - Get rid of the refrigerator in the garage. - Reduce the use of individual burn barrels. - Read the newspaper on-line. - Before you recycle, ask yourself if you can reuse: that can, that plastic bag, that box, etc. - Conserve water; when showering, get wet, turn water off, lather, then turn water back on for a rinse. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Here's another easy meatless meal. think about those October Saturdays you want to spend outside before winter comes around again. Instead of spending the afternoon fixing dinner, try this salad which you make early in the day and refrigerate until you're ready to use it. The corn and bean combination provides complete protein, so no meat or dairy products are needed with this as a main dish for a cool, summer supper. It also serves well as a side dish. (This also could be served with cornbread!) Black Bean Salsa Salad Vegetables: 2 15-oz. cans black beans, drained and rinsed 1 c. cooked corn, cooled 1 finely chopped red pepper (medium) 5-6 chopped scallions, with green tops 2 large plum tomatoes (or more), finely chopped ½ c. finely chopped cucumber Dressing: 1 T. chopped fresh basil ½ tsp. dried thyme 2 T. olive oil ½ tsp. salt 2 T. balsamic vinegar ½ tsp. ground cumin 1 T. fresh lime juice ½ tsp. chili powder 3 garlic cloves, minced ¼ tsp. black pepper Mix all vegetables together and top with mixed dressing. Stir well, and let marinate in refrigerator for several hours before serving, mixing several times. Enjoy! - 8
9 God s Work. Our Hands Day of Service On Sunday afternoon, September 11, more than 125 Lutherans from Adams County headed out to nine different sites to work together in service for the fourth God s Work. Our Hands Day of Service. Send-offs took place here at St. James and at St. Paul s Lutheran Church, Biglerville at 1:00 pm. This was an opportunity for Lutherans from various congregations to work together and to build relationships. Eighteen Lutheran congregation in the Gettysburg Conference were involved. This day coincided with the 15 th anniversary of the tragedy of 9/11; thus, one of the sites this year was to work at the Gettysburg Fire Department. Thank you to all those who helped make this day a genuine day of service to our community! GETTYSBURG C.A.R.E.S. SHELTER SEASON BEGINS OCTOBER 17 Thirteen churches will be hosting our homeless neighbors this year. We welcome our returning volunteers and all those who would like to become a volunteer. To be a host or overnight volunteer, completion of the C.A.R.E.S. training and volunteer paperwork is required. Training for St. James will take place again on MONDAY, October 17 at 6:30 pm in our library (main floor). Host volunteers do not spend the night and need to be from St. James. They would host during the two weeks the shelter is at St. James (December 12-25). Overnight volunteers may stay at any of our thirteen churches. We also can use some volunteers to cook breakfast at the Soup Kitchen (no training required). We have new volunteer coordinators this year. Donna Bixler will be doing the scheduling of the overnight volunteers and Jim Lohuis is scheduling the breakfast cooks. There will be a signup sheet in the gathering area for the training. If you have questions or concerns, please speak to Mary Stevenson, Donna Bixler or Pr. Mike. Blessing of the Youth & Child Care Yard Have you seen the Youth and Child Care Yard lately? It is absolutely beautiful! During the summer months, Brad Smith and members and friends of the Property Committee have worked hard in building a new sidewalk around the yard, as well as realigning the drainage, planting new grass and constructing the play areas for our children. On Sunday, October 9 at 9:15 am (following the early worship service) we will hold a dedication and blessing of the new yard. This will be a time to celebrate, in gratitude, this beautiful gift given to our Child Care, our youth, and the entire congregation! - 9 -
