1 ST. JAMES LUTHERAN CHURCH P.O. Box 4596, 109 York Street, Gettysburg, PA Phone: (717) Fax: (717) Web Page: We respond to God s abundant grace by being hearers, proclaimers and doers of the Word. Volume 59, No. 06 THE MESSENGER June 2014 CALL PROCESS UPDATE The Call Committee is in place and Council Vice President Tom Young has met with them this past month. Pastor Mike will soon meet with them as they begin their work of completing the Parish Profile, using information gathered from the congregation during the past several months. The discernment process for a called pastor will continue for the next year. Laura Haupt, recently graduated from Gettysburg Seminary on May 16, will begin her work here on Monday, June 2. Laura will be ordained on June 6, as part of the worship service during our Synod Assembly at Messiah College. Our Congregation Council has offered Laura a contract through May 31, Laura will join us as a full time interim pastor, in a leadership position specific to unique gifts she brings to this position. For our congregation, this year will be one of continuing the vitality of our ministries and the call of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Let us join together in welcoming Laura to St. James! WORSHIP AREA RENEWAL DEDICATION & CONCERT ON SUNDAY, JUNE 1 AT 4 PM Although much of the work in our worship area has been completed, the baptistry and columbarium are being completed as we continue our Easter celebration. Members and friends of St. James are invited to attend a special Concert and Dedication of the renewed worship area on Sunday, June 1 at 4:00 pm. In addition to re-dedicating the pitched tent, we will recognize the many people who have made this project possible and offer celebration in song, led by the St. James Adult Choir and festival brass. Several of our commissioned works which highlighted significant events over these past 40 years will be performed. In addition, a newly commissioned work by Dr. Robert Lau, will be sung in celebration of this significant event in the life of St. James. COME AND CELEBRATE PASTOR MIKE S 10 TH ANNIVERSARY Please join us Sunday, June 22 to celebrate and congratulate Pastor Mike on his 10 th anniversary here at St. James. We will be serving cake and coffee between the 8:15 & 10:45 am services in the gathering area. JOY OF THE GOSPEL SUNDAY SCHOOL EVENT Pastor Mike will offer a two-week summer Sunday School event on July 13 and July 20. It will be held in the worship space, and the theme is The Joy of the Gospel. As a text, Pastor Mike will use the recent encyclical by Pope Francis entitled, Evangelii Gaudium, The Joy of the Gospel. It is one of the most exciting writings on evangelism I ve read in recent years, comments Pastor Mike. It addresses the crisis of community commitment to sharing the Gospel. It offers insights into how to share the Gospel as well as how pastors need to see all preaching as evangelization. It addresses the social dimensions of sharing the Good News. The writing is uplifting and challenging at the same time! Here is but one quote from this text: The message [of the Gospel] is one which we often take for granted, and can repeat almost mechanically, without necessarily ensuring that it has a real effect on our lives and in our communities. How dangerous and harmful this is, for it makes us lose our amazement, our excitement and our zeal for living the Gospel of fraternity and justice! [p.90] Plan to join us on these two July dates!

Philadelphia (1993 PG-13) 2 hrs. Worship Area Starring Tom Hanks, in an Academy Award winning performance, and Denzel Washington, who star as two competing lawyers who join forces to sue a prestigious law firm for AIDS discrimination. This critically acclaimed film changed the conversation about AIDS and was the first mainstream movie to portray a sympathetic, openly gay protagonist. The first also to overtly recognize homophobia and HIV-based discrimination as prejudicial. The portrayal of Washington s homophobic character and Hank s award winning performance shows how an unlikely friendship develops and how courage overcomes prejudice and corruption. We Bought a Zoo (2011- PG) 2 hrs. Youth House Based on a true story, recently widowed Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon), still grieving his loss and dealing with school behavior issues of his 14-year-old son Dylan (Colin Ford), decides to get a fresh start by moving to the country. After touring many houses with his 7-year old daughter Rosie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones), they decide to purchase a beautiful old house that just happens to come with a dilapidated zoo, containing 200 exotic animals, which is facing destruction. FROZEN (G) will be shown on SUNDAY, JULY 20 at 7:00 pm in the Worship Area. - 4

6 A STEPHEN MINISTER is a child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting. Stephen Ministers are trained to provide emotional and spiritual care whenever needed, and all conversations are totally confidential. Please call Pastor Mike ( ) or Sue Hill ( ) to be referred. You are never alone! What Kind of Woman Would Receive the Care of a Stephen Minister? A woman like Sarah who faced a major change in life at an advanced age and needed someone to listen to both her joy and apprehension. A woman like Hagar who was abandoned along with her child and needed someone to offer her hope and remind her of God's presence. A woman like Hannah who struggled with her inability to bear a child and needed someone with whom to share her sadness and pain. A woman like Naomi who had lost her loved ones and needed someone to hear her sorrow and pain. A woman like Ruth who left everything that was familiar to her and needed someone to journey with her in her new life. A woman like Esther who was faced with a major decision and needed someone who could listen to her concerns and offer encouragement. A woman like Mary of Nazareth who lived with both the joys and struggles of having an exceptional child and needed someone to help her sort out the ponderings of her heart. A woman like Martha who was burdened by the demands of daily life and needed someone to help her regain sight of what was most important. A woman like Mary Magdalene who received healing from inner turmoil and needed someone to walk with her as she built a new life. A WOMAN LIKE YOU! If you would like to help put The Messenger together on a monthly basis, please contact Debby Nimtz at ext You are welcome to help as your schedule allows. 7 MAY COUNCIL REPORT Claire Anderson, Corresponding Secretary Congregation Council held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 21, UPDATES: Call Committee: Council Vice President Tom Young reported that he met with members of the Call Committee at the end of April. During this meeting Tom shared the news that since Laura Haupt would serve as our Interim Pastor, they would have more time to explore ministry options. He encouraged the Committee to begin work on the Parish Profile. Tom reported on members' enthusiasm for this work. Pastor Mike and Assistant to the Bishop Rob Blezzard will meet with the Committee in the near future. Treasurer s Report: Office and Finance Manager Mella DeNoma presented the April financial reports which Council approved. Finance Chair Tom Young reminded Council that the Worship Area Renewal expenses will definitely total $350,000 which includes extras such as additional labor and materials for painting and IT expenses. Current totals for Worship Area Renewal donations are on target at $151,000 of the $200,000 pledged over three years. Council encourages all members to continue to give reverently. Motions from Committees: Council approved the following motions recommended by the Personnel Committee: (1) the Visitation Pastor Job Description; (2) an increase in the Visitation Pastor's number of hours from 8 to 10 hours a week; and (3) an extension of Sister Deborah McClellan's contract as part-time pastoral caregiver until the position of Visitation Pastor is filled. Also, Council approved a motion from the World Outreach Committee requesting special collections for the nursing staff of the LAMB hospital in Pakistan at services on June 28 th and 29 th. 8 MEMBERSHIP UPDATES - If your children have grown up and moved away and no longer consider themselves to be members of St. James (but they are still receiving mailings and offering envelopes), please notify Office & Finance Manager Mella DeNoma at ext. 201 or cdenoma@stjamesgettysburg.org so that we can remove them from our roster to ensure that our church records are accurate and up-to-date. ELCA Embarks on First Comprehensive Fundraising Campaign As members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) seek to grow the life-changing, life-sustaining ministries of this church, they can do so through Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA. The fiveyear comprehensive campaign is the first ever for the ELCA. A goal of the campaign, overwhelmingly approved by the voting members of the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, is to raise $198 million to help sustain and grow the ministries of this church. The additional resources will provide the ELCA with opportunities to deepen relationships and expand ministries that serve communities in the United States and around the world. Our lives are changed by our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. And because of that relationship with God, who knows and loves us, we are freed to make a difference, said the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, ELCA presiding bishop. Through this campaign, ELCA members have the opportunity to share God s love in meaningful and life-changing ways, said Eaton. Together we can save a child s life, identify and prepare leaders in our church and among our global companions, start or renew congregations, and help people and communities break the cycle of hunger and poverty. That s what this campaign can do. That s what we can do. And, we get to do this in Jesus name. Approved during the ELCA s 25 th anniversary year, the campaign goal of nearly $200 million represents a significant increase in designated funding for existing and new ministry initiatives. Through several priorities, the campaign seeks to: Renew and begin new congregations. End hunger and overcome malaria. Identify and train new leaders and engage young people in the life of this church. Expand the ELCA s disability ministries. Grow this church s capacity to serve globally, support ELCA missionaries and women leaders among global companion churches. In their action at the 2013 Churchwide Assembly, voting members thanked the 4-million-member ELCA for their ongoing stewardship and generosity through regular offerings and invited every one of the ELCA s nearly 10,000 congregations, 65 synods, related ministries and the individual members to make a contribution toward the campaign. Gifts may be designated for specific campaign priorities or given to the campaign to be applied where the need is greatest. The Campaign for the ELCA offers a God-given opportunity to expand this church s vision, said Loren Anderson, an ELCA member in Minneapolis who, along with his wife, MaryAnn Waalen Anderson, co-chairs the campaign s steering committee. We feel called to serve in a leadership role for this campaign because of the tremendous moment it offers all of us in this church, reflecting on the abundance in our lives and helping to make an impact in this world. This campaign gives us all the chance to reach out locally and globally in new ways that will make a difference not only today but well into the future, said MaryAnn Anderson, one of the co-chairs of the campaign s steering committee. Information about Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA is available at
