3 Stephen Ministry: Christ Caring for People Through People Bear one another s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2) There are times when the lively, joyous celebration of the Christmas season seems to deny our inevitable experiences of pain and suffering. The Blue Christmas Service scheduled at St. James for December 17 th, the third Wednesday in Advent, at 7:00 pm offers an opportunity for all members of the congregation and community to gather together in the hope of Christ s coming amid the reality of suffering; to acknowledge sadness, grief, and disappointments, to be present with one another in solidarity during times of pain, and to pray for Christ s healing presence among us at Christmas and in all seasons of our lives. Situated just before the longest night of the year, the Blue Christmas Service, using the Unfailing Light liturgy, will offer time to both actively and meditatively express the brokenness of life and to pray together for returning light and healing for each of God s people. Stephen Ministers will be available after the service to pray with individuals. November 16, 2014 ANNUAL CONGREGATION MEETING Submitted by Mella DeNoma, Office & Finance Manager Council President Tom Young opened the meeting. A constitution change was approved to establish a Columbarium Committee intended to supervise the management and care of the Columbarium. It was announced that Sally and Shawn Abma would serve as coordinators for the ELCA/Lower Susquehanna Synod s Always Being Made New Campaign. 5 FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS for 2014 must be placed in the offering or church office by Sunday, December 28 th Offering Envelopes will continue to be mailed every two months. Mission Fund in Action This month we are recognizing The Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Philippines Typhoon Haiyan effort which has received money from the 2014 Mission Fund, made possible by the generosity of members and families of St. James. Since 1945, Lutheran congregations have rallied around the needs of our brothers and sisters around the world with Lutheran World Relief. When Category 5 Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines in November 8, 2013, your gifts allowed LWR to walk with the people of the Philippines toward a stronger future. St. James congregation provided cash donations as well as making LWR Quilts and Personal Care Kits in response to the typhoon. By the Numbers** - 14 million people affected - 4 million people displaced - 1 million houses damaged - 28,626 people injured - 6,245 people reported dead - 1,039 people reported missing ** Source: U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) LWR Staff have coordinated with partners to mobilize staff and resources to respond to the most urgent needs. LWR has provided shelter repair kits to families whose homes were damaged in the typhoon. LWR employs residents of three municipalities in Northern Cebu in short-term work assignments removing debris from public spaces, helping to get cash into the hands of those who need it. LWR has shipped Personal Care Kits, Baby Care Kits, School Kits, and Quilts, which have been distributed to more than 26,000 families. Enough for 13,500 households and 4,760 school students. LWR also provides high-capacity water filters ensuring communities have access to safe drinking water The LWR Typhoon Haiyan effort anticipates, that between November 2013 and June 2016, reaching more than 255,000 people affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Thus far, LWR has reached more than 108,000 people, or 43 percent of people targeted by LWR s response. LWR issued an appeal - In response to conditions following Typhoon Haiyan, for funding, aiming to raise $8 million, to meet the immediate relief and long term recovery needs of affected populations. To date, LWR has raised more than $ 6.8 million, or nearly 85 percent of the organization s fundraising target. In response to the LWR appeal, The Mission Fund Committee discussed and unanimously decided to recommend supporting the Lutheran World Relief's Philippines Typhoon Fund with a gift of $1200. The recommendation was subsequently presented to the Congregation Council for consideration and approved at their April 16, 2014 meeting. Donations from people like you allow the church to respond in times of need. Pray: Pray for those affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan, that they may be granted peace and healing. Pray for the volunteers and organizations assisting in recovery, that they may have strength and understanding to help those affected through this long-term process. There were 57 quilts made at our recent LWR QUILTING BEE for Lutheran World Relief, under the auspices of our World Outreach Committee! Our thanks to these volunteers: Jean Clapper, Sally Crist, Patsy DeHaas, Nina Dolly, Marian Gastley, Connie Gulden, Roberta Hughes, Margie Keyser, Jackie Krebs, Sonda Newby, Barbara Nicks, Elaine Swanson, Joan Wise, and Gladys Woerner. We have now made 957 quilts in the eleven years we ve been making quilts! These quilts will be blessed at weekend services on December 6 & 7. We ll be quilting again in the Spring and would welcome anyone who wants to join the group. We also always accept donations of material and sheets

6 A Message from Our ELCA Missionary Partner in Liberia Brian Palmer here. Good to hear from you and great to hear of the concern of the people of St. James. I was scheduled to be in the states for the months of June and July and just before I was to return to Liberia I was told I couldn't go until Ebola is contained. Since it may be some time before I am allowed to return to Liberia I have been asked to serve in Cameroon in the meantime. I am in almost daily contact with friends and colleagues in Liberia. I think it is safe to say that misinformation, fear, rising prices of food and transportation, limited access to medicine for treatable illness etc. have all conspired to make life very difficult for Liberians. I personally feel quite frustrated by the church choosing to do the smart thing(telling me I could not return) instead of the right thing(allowing me to return). I will try to keep my website: tryingsmall.com up to date with news from both Liberia and Cameroon. In theory I will be back in the states the summer of I would love to plan on a visit to St. James. Blessings to you and yours, Brian Poinsettias & Donations for World Hunger [THIS WILL BE THE ONLY TIME THIS FORM IS PRINTED!] Once again, we are given an opportunity to enhance the beauty of our Christmas worship and to also provide the gift of life to those who hunger. All names will be printed and placed on the table in the gathering area before Christmas. Please fill out this form and return it with your check by Monday, December 15 th to Judith Seilhamer, 360 East Lincoln Avenue, Gettysburg, PA Check are payable to St. James Sacristy Committee; please indicate on the memo line: Poinsettias/World Hunger. ======================================================================== I wish to offer: number of Poinsettias at $9.00 each and/or $ for World Hunger (any monetary amount is welcome) Given in loving: [ ] honor of [ ] memory of by [ ] WILL PICK UP - If you re unable to get your poinsettia within three days after Christmas, please donate to World Hunger instead as it is hard to find homes for poinsettias at this time of year

7 As we dive into our new liturgical year this Advent, why not think about how you might try on a new way of serving the church this year? We are currently seeking additional Assisting Ministers to add to the rotation. As a liturgical church, our worship is never just the work of the Pastors, but always the work of the people. Assisting Ministers are the active, vibrant voice of the laity behind our altar Table each week. Assisting Ministers add their own unique voices to our worship services as they write and lift up the Prayers of the People. They faithfully proclaim God s gifts and grace to us as they serve Holy. They send us out from worship and remind us of our common Baptismal vocation to serve the Lord. This is a crucial role in the worship life of our community and one that is relatively easy to learn! Assist at one or both Sunday morning services! Please prayerfully consider enriching our worship experience as an Assisting Minister. Please contact Pastor Mike or Pastor Laura with questions, or to express interest in receiving an Assisting Minister tutorial from an experienced Assisting Minister.
