The students with their teachers, will soon begin discussions about Jesus' journey into the dessert for 40 days and 40 nights. This period of time was highly contemplative and prophetic for Jesus as he discerned his life whilst being vigorously challenged by the Devil. As Christian people, we are called to walk this journey with Jesus and to reflect on this period of time of the liturgical calendar as we prepare for the death and resurrection of Jesus at Easter time. We will commence this journey with our Carnevale Parade and Shrove Tuesday/pancake Tuesday feast next week. The P & F will be cooking pancakes for the children and I thank them in advance for supporting this important school event. Ms Ciocca has organised a Carnevale Parade, where all students will show case the masks they have made in the courtyard at 9am on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will formally celebrate the beginning of our Lenten journey with a Mass at 11:45am; all parents are welcome to attend this significant Mass, where we will distribute ashes to each child s forehead as per our long standing catholic tradition. For 2,000 years, priests have used ashes to mark the foreheads of their congregations with the words, From dust you came, and to dust you shall return. The ashes come from a previous Palm Sunday. The palms are burned, the ashes collected and then crushed into a fine, sooty powder and placed into bowls. The ashes are blessed by the priest during the Ash Wednesday Mass after the homily. Then, in a Communion-like procession, people are invited to come forward, and the ashes are applied to each person s forehead in the shape of a cross. This is a significant time in the life of the church and the children will subsequently immerse themselves in a series of activities to support Caritas Australia over the coming weeks. These activities will culminate in our annual Caritas Carnival, on Wednesday 12 th April, which is always a huge highlight. Qkr how to guide How to get your kids to School on Time

Page 2 Term 1 Week 4 23 rd February, 2017 AGM (Annual General Meeting) /School Board Nominations the AGM is fast approaching and is scheduled for Wednesday 22 March commencing at 6pm. This is a community event and you are all warmly invited to hear about the school and its progress. Most importantly, we are seeking nominations for two positions on our School Board. I have often heard from new parents saying, that perhaps I m not eligible to nominate for these positions as I have just commenced my time at TWCS. I can assure you, that is not the case and that your involvement in the school in this way is extremely beneficial and most rewarding at any stage of your child s involvement. Therefore, if you wish to nominate yourself for either one of these two, two year tenures and are able to commit to two meetings per term, then I ask that you forward your nomination to info@twcs.catholic.edu.au, alternatively by completing the nomination form included in this newsletter, by no later than 20 March Parents and Friends Committee We hosted our first meeting last Wednesday and it was encouraging to see many new faces in attendance. I am pleased to announce the new Executive for 2017: Chairperson Kirsty Miller, Secretary Jess Rainsford and Treasurer Louise Viergever. I wish to sincerely thank our outgoing Executive, Bianca Ayres, Karen Bilney, Tracie Broadhead and Helen Ricci. These ladies were instrumental in establishing our first P & F Committee 2 years ago, raising a significant amount of money to fund projects within the school. SRC (Student Representative Council) it is my pleasure to announce the SRC representatives who have been voted in by their peers for semester This is a privileged position and testament of the emerging leadership qualities and characteristics already exhibited by these students. The SRC represents their respective classes at meetings with myself scheduled for each fortnight. These students will be presented with their badges at the assembly on Friday this week. 1 Nikita & Jameson 2/3 Lucy & Ruby 3/4 Hudson & Mack 5/6 Alex & James 6/7 Rivers & Michael QKr App - For all school payments! In 2016 the School Board approved the implementation of an application (App) for phones and tablets which can be used by parents to pay for school fees, camps, excursions, uniforms etc. To access this app, simply go to the App store to locate QKr by MasterCard. A full How to guide is attached to this newsletter for your convenience. Please note: when paying school fees, you will need to nominate the amount you are paying as this app is a third party and as such, it cannot be integrated with our finance system and thus doesn t identify your personal balance details. Please also note: we have contacted Villi s to ask if they could accommodate their ordering process on this app, however they do not have the resources to support an online ordering process and thus you will need to continue with the current ordering process. Following this, you will be asked to register and account and to locate the school for which you wish to use the app for. We anticipate that this will assist families who are already very busy to make payments in a quick and secure way. The App is operational and we trust that you enjoy the ease and convenience associated with this. Finally, I have attached an article from parenting expert Michael Grose If you struggle with peace, harmony and getting kids focused on school, the attached article provides you with 6 suggestions which will help your mornings run a littler smoother! Regards, Mark Battistella Principal

Page 3 Term 1 Week 4 23 rd February, 2017 RELIGIOUS IDENTITY & MISSION NEWS Ash Wednesday Next week we will enter into the time in our church year called Lent which starts on Ash Wednesday March 1 st. The liturgical colours in our Church and classrooms will change from green (ordinary time) to purple the colour of mourning and penance. On this day all students will attend a liturgy (R/1 at 9am) or Mass (2-7 at 11.45am) Students and staff will be blessed with ashes on their foreheads and spend time praying for those in our community and around the world who are in need. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting for many Catholics refrain from eating red meat on this day and Good Friday. In fact many Catholic families choose to not eat meat on Fridays during the Lenten season. Lent lasts for 40 days (not including Sundays) and leads us to Holy Thursday, when we celebrate Jesus spending time with his disciples at the Last Supper; Holy Thursday is the first part of the Easter Triduum. The Easter Triduum (or Paschal Triduum) is the three days of prayer that precede the celebration of Easter. These three days see the celebration of the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, a Good Friday service that recalls the passion and death of Jesus Christ, and finally, the three days culminate in the celebration of Christ s Resurrection at the Easter Vigil, after nightfall on Holy Saturday but before dawn on Easter Sunday. Catholics around the world look forward to the three days of prayer and contemplation leading up to the grand celebration of the resurrection of Christ. For the students and staff in our school, we see Lent as a journeying time of reflection and contemplation; we ask ourselves questions like How much time do I spend in prayer? How much time do I spend helping others? How can I work to make our world a more just place for all?

Page 4 Term 1 Week 4 23 rd February, 2017 All classes will be working on Lenten themes in Religious Education lessons, and one of these is SOCIAL JUSTICE. Our whole school enquiry question is: How can we work hand in hand to love our neighbour during Lent? This fits beautifully with the theme for Caritas Project Compassion appeal LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR! Caritas Australia s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal is an extraordinary, ongoing demonstration of the faith, love and generosity of the Catholic congregation and caring supporters throughout Australia to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. All students at Tenison Woods will come home on Wednesday afternoon with a Project Compassion Box. Project Compassion is Caritas Australia s Lenten campaign. It is the Catholic Churches biggest fundraiser for global aid and development. I ask that The PC box is placed in your home and filled with any spare money/coins. Each week I will include a story in the newsletter which explains the great work Caritas is doing overseas and here in Australia to help the poorest of the poor. The students will bring their Project Compassion boxes back to school on Wednesday 12 th April for our CARITAS CARNIVAL. Every year the students at Tenison Woods look forward to the Caritas Carnival; it is an afternoon of raising awareness and raising funds. There will be 7 stalls (each one linked to a Project Compassion story and coordinated by a class) and the students will spend the money they have collected in their Project Compassion boxes on the stalls. Each stall is $1. If the students have $4, they can try 4 stalls, if they bring $7, they can try all 7 stalls etc. A list of the stalls will be printed in the coming weeks. This is a fun afternoon and all parents and younger brothers and sisters are welcome to join in. A Caritas Café will be available for parents to have a coffee and a muffin and to sit back and watch the afternoon fun. 5 Page 5 Term 1 Week 4 23 rd February, 2017 PE & SPORT NEWS Term 1 Sport: Last week saw the beginning of the basketball and kanga cricket programs for term 1. We have two Year 6/7 boys basketball teams and two Kanga Cricket teams. From all accounts the kanga cricket players thoroughly enjoyed getting out and having a hit, bowl and fielding. Only one of the basketball teams played this week and they had a win to start off the season. They defeated Black Forest Primary School 23 to 11. It was a full team effort as all players got on the scoreboard. As we progress through the season please ensure you check your for any change time game times and locations. SACPSSA Swimming Carnival: The SACPSSA swimming carnival is taking place on March 16 th at Magill Swimming Pool and we will be taking 12 students across a variety of age groups. The first trials took place this week and the second trial is next week. I look forward to sharing the students successes from the carnival.

Page 6 Term 1 Week 4 23 rd February, /7PB CLASSROOM NEWS Wow, what a busy start to our school year. We have enjoyed taken part in the beginning of the year mass, buddy lessons with the very cute Reception class, our first Excursion of the year and somehow we have also managed to fit in some learning. As can be seen from the photograph the Year 7 jumpers were excitedly received and we feel these may need to be surgically removed by the end of the year. We also delighted in welcoming our new PE teacher Miss K to the school not only to teach PE but also as the Year 6/7 classroom teacher on a Friday. Our Year 7 leaders with their new school jumpers. 7 Page 7 Term 1 Week 4 23 rd February, 2017 Excursion to Adelaide Aquatics Centre Everyone s gone surfing, surfing SA - Although the weather was a little damp, this did not have any effect on the student s enthusiasm, behaviour or the fun they had when completing the activities. Throughout the surfing, sailing, kayaking and canoeing, the students tackled each activity with skill, perseverance and a growth mindset. A very proud teacher looked on from dry land in awe of the teamwork, encouragement and resilience, each student displayed. Even though it was chilly, sailing was really good fun. Throughout the day we used the character strengths of teamwork and perseverance. Every single person also had a Growth Mindset, giving everything a go even when it was our first attempt at learning that skill. The Year 7 Crew The Year 6 Crew

Page 8 Term 1 Week 4 23 rd February, 2017 LE NOTIZIE ITALIANE Benvenuti ad un nuovo anno scolastico! (Welcome to a new school year!) Our year has begun well - the students have settled in well to Italian classes and are extending their learning. Many students will be exposed to a language other than English for the first time and I hope that, as their learning evolves, they will enjoy participating in Italian lessons. Learning a language enables students to have an appreciation of other cultures: their language, their belief systems, their traditions and their history. It is against this backdrop that we will celebrate CARNEVALE on Tuesday, 28 February. La Sfilata delle Maschere (Masks Parade) will begin at 9am in the Courtyard Area e siete benvenuti a celebrare con noi tutti (and you are welcome to celebrate with us)! Any younger brothers or sisters who wish to participate in la Sfilata may bring their mask with them on the day and join their brother s/sister s class during la Sfilata. During our Italian lessons children will be learning that, during Carnevale, Italy comes alive and, everywhere you look, you can see beautiful colours, beautiful costumes and beautiful masks. This beauty will be reflected in the masks that the children will be decorating (perhaps at home!) and I am certain you will be delighted with la Sfilata! A presto, Signora Ciocca
