1 St Pat s Matters 16 Alfred Street NANANGO 4615 PO Box 36 NANANGO 4615 Phone Fax pnanango@bne.catholic.edu.au Wednesday 15 March Dear Parents, This Thursday we celebrate St Patrick s Day. Our day will begin with mass at 9:00am and will include a shared morning tea and rotation of activities. Celebrating St Patrick s Day is an important opportunity to take some time out from our usual learning and have some fun. Parents are invited and welcome to attend mass and the activities on the day. In 2016 our school goals will continue to focus on student achievement with regards to the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard. This includes our continued focus on literacy. Our second school goal focuses on building our school community, so that St Patrick s continues to improve to become an excellent welcoming learning community for students, parents and staff. One of the achievements from last year s community goal was the re-establishment of the Parents and Friends Association. The P&F will continue in 2016 and will be holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM) next Wednesday March 23. At this meeting, reports will be submitted by relevant committee members reviewing The other important agenda item will be the formation of the 2016 committee. All positions will be declared vacant, and then nominations for the positions will be accepted and the 2016 committee will be appointed. At the AGM no general business will be discussed as they were discussed at last Friday s meeting. School Officer Required St Patrick s is looking to hire a school officer to work with students to run our Kanyaka Kitchen Tuckshop. Our Kanyaka Kitchen is an innovative learning project where students design and implement a menu which is sold at the tuckshop. The job is currently advertised on the vacancies tab from the following link All applications must be made online. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Easter and a safe holiday. The roads during the Easter period are extremely busy with everyone looking to make the most of the holiday period, so please be patient and drive carefully. Easter is also a time for renewal, so please allow time to have a break and relax. Enjoy! I will be on long service leave during term 2 and 3 travelling around our great land with my family. I leave with confidence knowing my replacement Mr Bill Mulcahy will continue the great work already achieved this term. Happy Easter, Matt

2 APRE REFLECTIONS AND REVELATIONS Dear Parents, St Patrick s Day How quickly our special day comes around! St Patrick s Day is this Thursday 17th March. The celebrations will begin with mass at 9:00am, which will be led by LG3. Mass will be followed by a shared morning tea with the whole school. We ask that each family bring something to share, which, if possible, is green. After morning tea the children will be put into mixed groups and participate in a rotation of activities, Parents are most welcome to join us on the day. Caritas Let us be mindful that while we are gifted with such wonderful things in our lives, others are not as fortunate. By contributing to Project Compassion, we are helping others in need as the Caritas organisation work across the globe to ensure that people have adequate shelter, enough food and clean water to sustain life. The support received through Project Compassion helps deliver the vital long-term development programs, respond to emergencies and build the resilience of communities. Keep your donations coming as there is only one more week to go. Thank you for what you have already contributed, it has been great to watch our tree of hands grow each week. Holy Week Celebrations This Sunday begins one of the most important weeks in the Catholic church s calendar. This Sunday is Palm Sunday where, according to the scriptures, Jesus rode into Jerusalem and was welcomed with crowds of people waving palms. This event was followed by Jesus sharing his last supper with the disciples on Holy Thursday (next week). At the end of this supper one of the disciples betrayed Jesus and handed him over to the chief priest, who then asked the people what he shall do with him. Their response was to crucify him. Good Friday is when Jesus death on a cross is remembered, followed by Easter Sunday when Jesus rose from the dead.

3 Next Thursday, we welcome you to join us at 9:15am in the lunch area, as the school will commemorate this remarkable story. Each class will tell the story of each scene: Palm Sunday through to Good Friday. We will celebrate the Resurrection when we return next Term. We are reminded that no matter how young or old we are, what a remarkable story it is. The fact that Jesus persevered in doing God s will in his life ought to give us hope in our own lives. Easter celebrates the promise of life in the face of death. Easter celebrations also reflect on peace and forgiveness which has come out of aggression. It is also a time for thinking about suffering, injustice and hardship. Let us focus this Easter, on the meaning of the Resurrection- New Life and new beginnings. National Day Against Bullying Take a Stand Together: National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence Our school has registered to be part of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, being held nationwide this Friday - 18 March. The National Day of Action is a day where school communities across Australia, Take a Stand Together against bullying and violence. St Patrick s is dedicated to creating supportive school environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence. By working together at St Patrick s, we are sending clear messages to young people that bullying and violence, in or outside of school, is not okay - at any time. The National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence is a major activity organised by Bullying. No Way! ( The Bullying. No Way! website, created by all Australian education jurisdictions, offers practical resources and information to help schools work together against bullying, harassment and violence. Students at St Patrick s will receive an armband on the day as well as participate in activities in the classroom to celebrate the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence on Friday. Wishing you all a wonderful Easter with your families. Stay safe and enjoy the break. Jen Cran APRE
