Also, Mass on Thursdays will be at 7:00 am at St. Charles starting May 10. The 6th Sunday of Easter "I HAVE CALLED YOU FRIENDS." Authentic friendship can seem hard to come by these days, especially in our transient society. We move away from family, change jobs, switch parishes, and end up in entirely new places with entirely new people. When we look for new friends, we all have different qualities we're looking for. While we may think of certain standards of behavior necessary to be a "good" friend, we would hardly refer to them as rules or "commandments." Friendships, we understand, ought to be characterized by freedom. We love the person, even sacrifice for them at times because, within ourselves, we want to maintain the friendship. So why does Jesus use the language of command as he calls the Apostles his friends? "You are my friends if you do what I command you." Jesus is radically transforming the concept of commandment. In the Jewish heritage of the Apostles, they would hear the word "command" and immediately think of the strict Levitical law and distance from God. In introducing the language of friendship, Jesus ties "commandment" to inner freedom of heart. The disciples have this freedom precisely because they know "what [the] Master is doing." Jesus has invited his followers into intimate friendship all along. He shares openly with them. We, too, have been called by love and invited into a relationship with Jesus. It is you and I that Jesus chooses and appoints. He does so personally. This "new commandment" to "love one another" is received around the shared table in the breaking of the bread. 3 6th Sunday of Easter Another year for our Religious Education Program has concluded for the children and young adults of our parish. The staff and catechists of St. Charles are here to reaffirm and support the greater work and responsibilities of the parents of these students in the work of handing on our faith to this new generation. Although classes have stopped for the summer, learning about our faith should never cease. Please make Mass a priority and continually pray with your children each and every day. Talk to your children about your faith and let them know and understand what being a Catholic is by your practice. R.C.I.A. We will continue to meet on a regular basis throughout the spring and summer. Should anyone wish to join this ministry, either as an inquirer, team member, or if you are just curious about the Church or our program, you are invited to come and see what we are all about. SERVERS We are currently undergoing a shortage of servers for the Mass. This ministry is very important and is indeed considered to be a ministry for the Church. If any youth in the fourth grade and above would be interested in this ministry, please contact the office. Additionally, this ministry is also open to any adults as well. THE CHARLESTON FOOD PANTRY relies on our monthly donations. The need for assistance will increase especially during the summer when students are out of school. Our next collection is this weekend, May 5 & 6, and the item is cereal. 4 High School Youth Next Sunday, May 13, will be the Youth Mass and Senior Breakfast. THE ST. CHARLES WOMEN will have a potluck/ meeting on Monday, May 7 at 6:30 pm in Moriarty Hall to discuss the disbursement of rummage sale monies. Drinks and the main dish will be provided and those attending are asked to bring a side dish. All women of the parish are invited. THE FAMILY OF MARY HACKETT invite her friends and her parish family to a Commitment Service at Fairview Cemetery in Kansas, IL at 11:00 am on May 12. RCIA RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Adults and children who wish to learn more about Catholicism, becoming a Catholic or help with the RCIA may contact the parish office.
