Marlene Schnieders LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Getting ahead in the world is something many see as important. Success, a comfortable life, and worldly securities are seen as what is needed to achieve happiness. Whether or not we like to admit it, these pursuits are operative in many of our lives. As much as we want to believe in the Gospel, we also find it hard not to cling to these other things. Unconditional trust in God must be first if we are going to perceive the kingdom of God. And while God does not want us to go out of our way to be miserable, Jesus clearly gives preference to those who are poor, hungry, weeping, marginalized, vulnerable, and despised. When people encounter these things, they touch God. It teaches us not to get too comfortable with our riches and that there is much more to true life than the stuff we find so important. SUNDAY NIGHT SCHOLARS will be meeting each Sunday at 7:00 pm now through March 3 rd. During these weeks, we will examine the movements of the heart from gratitude to a life of holiness. Sessions will be held in the St. Charles Borromeo Church, with Fr. Hyland leading reflection and discussion. All adults are welcome to attend these sessions to help continue their own faith formation Stewardship of Treasure We have 385 households in our Parish Family contributing: Envelopes $3, Loose EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) (Needed weekly) $6, ACSA CPN Catholic Times First Offering 5.00 Food Pantry Latin American Church Maintain St. Charles Miscellaneous Rent Total $5, Time Period: Jul 1, Feb 9, 2019 Year-to-Date Collected $251, Year-to-Date Expenses $259, Deficit/Surplus for Year ($8,058.25) MINISTRY FAIR We will be having our annual Ministry Fair next weekend, February 23 & 24. The parishioners of St. Charles should have received a brochure highlighting our many important ministries we have in our parish. Please take time and review the brochure and then stop by the fair and sign up for one or several ministries. Our parish is unique in that we are so active. However, we can only remain so with adequate members of parish filling the various roles in the different ministries. Your help may be the deciding factor of keeping a ministry. CATHOLIC TIMES SUBSCRIPTION If you have not renewed your subscription to our diocesan newspaper, Catholic Times, please consider doing so. At $15 annually, Catholic Times remains a bargain and a valuable way to keep informed on the vital issues that affect us and our faith. You can subscribe either digitally or through the mail. Please use the special envelope from your January monthly packet, or put your money in another envelope marked Catholic Times. The total cost to the parish is $5,260. To date, $1,250 has been collected. 2

3 The 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Most parents are aware that we will not have 1 st Eucharist for our 2 nd grade this year. This is because our Bishop has decided to change the order of the Sacraments of Initiation to a more ancient and original process. So that everyone can have a better understanding, we will be trying to answer some of the more common questions. If anyone has questions, please do not hesitate to contact Deacon Jeff. When our children are confirmed prior to First Holy Communion, how are they to make an adult commitment to the Church? All sacraments are a gift from our Heavenly Father, who desires to give us His very life, which we call grace. Sacraments are not earned or merited. For this reason, Confirmation should not be perceived as the sacrament of choosing to confirm one s faith but of Christ choosing us and the deepening of the grace and gifts of the Holy Spirit received in our baptism. The Church even requires priests to confirm infants and children younger than the age of reason when they are in danger of death so that they may receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. An authentic mature commitment to Christ and the Church is expressed in full participation in the Eucharist and apostolic life of the Church. It is not achieved at a single moment but throughout the life-long deepening of our relationship with Christ. This begins in childhood and continues until death During these winter months the need for good nutrition is important for those in our community who do not have the resources many of us take for granted. Please show your children the importance of charity by helping us supply peanut butter to the Soup Stop. The Soup Stop is a vital part of our community which supplies lunches to those of our community who are in need. Thank you for your help! SUNDAY SCRIPTURE QUESTIONS TO PONDER Good-attitudes and bad-attitudes: Jesus speaks the same words to kinsfolk, town folk, and foreigners alike: four blesseds and four woes. The blessed are those in need of works of mercy. So are we. The woeful are those who need to do mercy works. Note well: they are not cursed; they are reminded. Let me review the works of mercy. Even if I think I have only a little, what can I give and do for another? What will I let someone do for me? 4
