They can be the most transforming or the most hurtful of experiences. Our families of origin have a huge claim on who we are and who we will become. While families need to help us fulfill some of our human needs, this cannot be their sole purpose or focus. Healthy and happy families consist of folks who always have their eyes on the needs and best interests of the other individuals who make up their family unit. We live in the greater family of the world, which is also God's family. It can't only be about us. We must focus our gaze on the needs and well-being of our brothers and sisters. This whole seeing allows us to see others as God sees them. The Holy Family is the perfect example of how all families can work: our families of origin, the families in which we now find ourselves, and the family of our world. May we look to their example in helping us fine-tune our systems of family life so that God's presence can truly be revealed in and through them! THE OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED: December 31 and January 1 for the New Year Holiday. Daily Mass Scriptures 12/30/2018 Mon 1 Jn 2:18-21 / Jn 1:1-18 Tue Nm 6:22-27 / Gal 4:4-7 / Lk 2:16-21 Wed 1 Jn 2:22-28 / Jn 1:19-28 Thu 1 Jn 2:29-3:6 / Jn 1:29-34 Fri 1 Jn 3:7-10 / Jn 1:35-42 Sat 1 Jn 3:11-21 / Jn 1:43-51 Sun Is 60:1-6 / Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6 / Mt 2:1-12 SUNDAY SCRIPTURE QUESTIONS TO PONDER Holy persons, holy family. It is, perhaps, easy to see the holiness in the Holy Family and not in our own. But holy we are, too. We are holy because of God s loving-kindness and God living among us. Pope Francis says this clearly in Gaudete et Exsultate on the call to holiness in today s world. Let us look to the saint next door. Let us also be the saint next door. God, in creation, makes us holy. We are called to remain in holiness. Though we need help from God and from others, it is possible for each one of us. Who can I name as a saint next door? What do they do and say, not do and say, to make this so? What one holy and mercy work will I do in this Christmas season? What will I do and say to bring holiness to this sometimes-messy world? 4

6 ANNUAL CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL UPDATE: In Gratitude for God s Abundant Blessings Thank you to the parishioners who have pledged $17,760 towards our goal of $34,784. All money that is paid over our goal comes back to the parish, and if we do not meet our goal the parish must cover the difference. The diocese serves each of us, and our financial support is needed to continue God s work in the diocese ACSA Goal COURSES FOR ALL CATHOLICS University of Dayton Online Learning - Sign up for the online courses through the Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF), a program of the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives at the University of Dayton. These adult faith formation courses support the Church's catechetical ministry and are for all Catholics. Registration for 2019 Cycle 1 is now open and closes January 16. The courses run January 20 through February 23, 2019 at a cost of $50 per course/$40 per seminar. The course calendar can be found at: vlcff.udayton.edu/calendar/#cycle_1_2019_english. You can subscribe either digitally or through the mail with all the same stories, pictures and advertising. To receive it digitally, sign up online at ct.dio.org/gogreen. Please use the special envelope from your monthly packet, or put your money in another envelope marked Catholic Times. ST. CHARLES OUTREACH TO THE POOR is through the Coalition for People in Need (CPN). We have again committed $8800 in 2019 to assist our poor brothers and sisters in Charleston who need help with food, rent, utilities, gasoline, and medicine. You will find your CPN envelope in your January packet of envelopes. Please be generous so we can fulfill our parish s commitment. Thanks for caring! EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments Do you practice good stewardship with your family? Stewardship is about more than offerings to a church or charity. It is about continually giving of ourselves in a way that gives glory to God. Sharing our gifts with those in our immediate family honors God and is evidence of your gratitude for these people in your life. When we find ourselves lacking in gratitude, we should reflect on what life would be like without them. It is easy to take for granted those we see all the time. Hospitality is not just for the stranger or guest. Are we committed to a life of stewardship that not only serves as a good example, but also helps our relatives thrive? Using our gifts without wisdom might mean we have little to give to those we love. We are on the journey of life together, and no one exists in the Body of Christ alone. Stewardship is about the entirety of our lives. Our faith life is not reserved to Mass on a Sunday. It all begins and ends with those we love. -- Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS PRAYER FOR FAMILIES at the start of a New Year God, thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. Amen. 6
