NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (Scriptural text below taken from United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) EPISTLE: 2 CORINTHIANS 11:31-12:9 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus knows, he who is blessed forever, that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus, in order to seize me, but I was lowered in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands. I must boast; not that it is profitable, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know someone in Christ who, fourteen years ago (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows), was caught up to the third heaven. And I know that this person (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows) was caught up into Paradise and heard ineffable things, which no one may utter. About this person I will boast, but about myself I will not boast, except about my weaknesses. Although if I should wish to boast, I would not be foolish, for I would be telling the truth. But I refrain, so that no one may think more of me than what he sees in me or hears from me because of the abundance of the revelations. Therefore, that I might not become too elated, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it might leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me.
5 GOSPEL: LUKE 6:31-36 Do to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit [is] that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as [also] your Father is merciful. Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory to Him Forever! Slava Isuzu Christu! Slava na Viki! Gloria a Jesucristo! Gloria por Siempre! ALLELUIA + A Golden Sunday for a Golden Anniversary + ALLELUIA THANKING GOD FOR FIFTY YEARS AND LOOKING AHEAD TO COMPLETE THE CENTURY With gratitude to the Most Holy Trinity, one God, for blessing our Byzantine Catholic faith and our local Cathedral of Saint Stephen over the last fifty years in the Phoenix area, we join His Grace, Bishop JOHN (Pazak), and our Eparch Emeritus, Bishop GERALD (Dino) in welcoming you, dear reader, as well as His Grace, Bishop MILAN (Lach, of the Eparchy of Parma) and His Excellency, Most Rev. Thomas Olmsted, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Phoenix, at our historic festivities. After our joyful yet solemn Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at our cathedral, for those persons who have registered in advance we look forward to sharing good food and good cheer with you at the Parish Hall, starting at 3 p.m. for the social hour and 4 p.m. for our Jubilee Dinner. Acknowledging thankfully the faithful and intrepid founders and benefactors of our Byzantine Catholic community over the last half-century, these times require all of us who call St. Stephen s Cathedral our spiritual home and the Eparchy of Phoenix our greater Byzantine Catholic family in the household of God, the universal Church, to pray and work together to secure the future of our beloved Byzantine Catholic Church and our community here in the Phoenix area. 6 CALLING ALL HOLY ROLLERS AND LOOKING FOR NEW HOLY ROLLERS As with many Byzantine Catholic parishes, in anticipation of Christmas our Cathedral parish is blessed with dedicated parishioners, our holy rollers, who lovingly prepare pirohi and other tasty Carpatho-Rusyn treats for sale to help sustain our wonderful community. Holy Rollers, it is that time again and new volunteers are welcome to join the ranks! Our veterans would be pleased to teach new volunteers how to prepare pirohi and other tasty treats: time and good will, not experience, are required! Schedule: Fri., Oct. 5, potato balls. Sat., Oct. 6, pirohi pinchers. Sat., Oct. 15 and Sun., Oct. 16, baking begins in earnest! For more information, please call Mrs. Dolores Sugent at 480/ CHANGE OF SCHEDULE RE: UPCOMING YEAR OF EASTERN CHRISTIAN FORMATION As the first teachers of Christian faith, of culture, and true manliness and femininity to their children, our parents need all the support they can get in the midst of a post-christian society. Our parish, therefore, announces to them and our youths the good news that a new year of Eastern Christian Formation awaits our beloved children and teenagers. Look for registration forms in the back of the Cathedral and at our rectory so that our parents may register their children on time to begin their biweekly courses, starting on Sunday, October 14 at 11 a.m. in designated classrooms of Buildings 8141, 8131, and 8105 of our Rectory-Chancery complex. We ask our parents and children to complete their forms and return them to our rectory with a fee of only $25 for each family no later than October 12, 2018, close of business. 7 MAKING OCTOBER TRULY MARIAN: JOIN US AT AKATHIST BEFORE SAT./SUN. LITURGIES In light of October being a month traditionally associated with the Theotokos, the most pure and blessed Virgin Mary, we invite everyone to join us to sing the traditional Akathist to the Blessed Virgin Mary in place of Third Hour before Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings next month and before the Vesper Vigil Liturgy on Saturday afternoons. Regarding Saturday afternoons, there will be someone to teach and lead us starting at 3:45 p.m. in this beautiful tribute to the Mother of God while a priest will be available for confessions before the Divine Liturgy from 3:00 to 3:25 p.m. and upon request, after the Divine Liturgy. GREEK CATHOLIC UNION: A way for us to make GOOD things happen for us individually and as a Byzantine Catholic community The G.C.U. came about as a way many years ago for Byzantine Catholics in America to support each other and our parishes. Also, the G.C.U. helps us to provide for our future and that of our loved ones financially. Next month, our G.C.U. Lodge is leading efforts to organize the Fall Harvest Fest for our parish on Saturday, October 27. Come and learn more of the G.C.U. and the good things we can make happen together! NEXT MEETING: Sunday, October 7 after Divine Liturgy in the parish hall. AXIOS, AXIOS, AXIOS! Let us pray for Dcn. Joel Barstaad from Denver, who will be ordained to the sacred priesthood at our cathedral on Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. One more day for us to rejoice! CALLING ON OUR ALTAR SERVERS FOR THE ARIZONA ROSARY CELEBRATION All Altar Servers from our Cathedral parish are invited and encouraged to attend the Arizona Rosary Celebration on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at the Phoenix Convention Center from 2:00 p.m. until 4:15 p.m. Before the event, at 11:00 a.m., our squad of altar servers will checkin and have a Pizza Lunch at the Phoenix Convention Center. After the celebration, they will be available for pick up by parents at the Convention Center. All servers are asked to bring their own vestments (see Fr. Diodoro or Fr. Rojas if you need to borrow them to participate in this event). Attired in their vestments, our intrepid squad of altar boys will take part in Bishop Olmsted s Entrance Procession as one of the most impressive features of the celebration. After the celebration,

9 PRAYERS TO THE BLESSED MOTHER OF GOD according to THE BYZANTINE RITE TRA- DITION (taken from the Byzantine Leaflet Series pamphlet with the title listed above, available at www. archpitt.org, the Web page of the Metropolitan Archeparcy of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) In the Byzantine Rite there are many other prayers in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mostly they are troparia or hymns used in the liturgical services, such as: a) It is truly proper to glorify You... ( Dostojno jest ), b) We fly to Your Patronage... ( Pod Tvoju milost ), and many others. Here we will briefly discuss only these two. IT IS TRULY PROPER TO GLORIFY YOU is the hymn that was introduced into the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom during the seventh century by the Patriarch Sophronius of Jerusalem (d. 638) in order to extol the Holy Mother of God among the Saints. The origin and precise time of its composition is unknown to us. The second part of the prayer, More honorable.., seems to be older and is used in various liturgical services much more often. It was already mentioned by St. Ephrem the Syrian (d. 373), who had a great devotion to the B.V.M. and, in all probability, desired to establish a special veneration to Her. Referring to this hymn the II Vatican Council explained : As the Most Holy Mother of God, after Her Son, She was exalted by divine grace above all men and angels. Hence the Church appropriately honors Her with special reverence (cf. Canst. on the Church, n. 66). The great Byzantine hymnographer, St. Cosmas of Maiuma (d. about 760), in composing the Canon for Good Friday, adapted this second part of the prayer into the 9th Heirmos ( More honorable... ). For this reason even its composition was for some time attributed to him. But, as was mentioned, this popular hymn-prayer existed much earlier. 5. WE FLY TO YOUR PATRONAGE-is the oldest Marian prayer equally used in the East and in the West. Its origin, as the origin of so many ancient prayers, just disappears somewhere in antiquity. But a recently discovered fragment of papyrus with the Greek text of this prayer (found in Egypt, 1917) proves beyond any doubt that it was composed not later than in the third century. And indeed, the third century with its fierce persecutions of Christians, and their exposure to all kinds of dangers, sufferings and needs, created a proper atmosphere for such prayer. This great confidence of the faithful in Mary s motherly protection eventually, in the tenth century, took a more solemn form in the establishment of the Feast of the Patronage of the Mother of God ( Pokrov ), celebrated in our Rite on the first day of October. Part III will appear in next week s bulletin. We hope that this series of articles will give you, dear reader, a background for the singing of the Marian Akathist before Liturgies in October.
