If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you. Tone 8: You were the light of monastics, O wise Bessarion, * and by the rays of your virtues * and the radiance of grace you were like a lamp in the desert. * From the gloom of the passions and the darkness of the wicked, * from all sorrow and temptation, * deliver those who fervently honor you and hymn with faith your divine repose. 5. My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for daybreak. 3

4 Tone 8: Enduring standing amid thorns * in your divine love of ineffable struggles, * you show forth an effort equal to that of the martyrs. * You sweetened the bitter waters of the sea * and gave drink to souls in thirst, O all-wise one. * You traversed the flowing waters of the Nile, * making your passage over its waters * with dry feet, O all-praised one. 4. Let the watchman count on daybreak and Israel on the Lord. Tone 8: Knowing you to be like the wise Elijah, * we all clearly praise you, O Bessarion, * for you caused torrents of water to fall as rain from the sky * through God s mercy on you, * and by your honored supplications * you bestowed fountains of rain and divine dew from on high upon all the faithful * as well as grace and power and invincible protection. For Our Venerable Father Hilarion 3. Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption, Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity. Tone 4: Having lived an irreproachable life * in patience, gentleness, compunction, * unfeigned charity, self-mastery, * night- long vigils, faith, 4

5 hope and compassion, * you seemed to be an angel in a body on earth, * O blessed father Hilarion. * Intercede for our souls before God. Psalm Praise the Lord, all you nations, acclaim him all you peoples! Tone 4: You were a heavenly man, * an earthly angel, O blessed one, * a fountain of compunction, a river of compassion, * an ocean of miracles, * a corrector of sinners, a fruitful olive tree for our God, * making the faces of the faithful gleam with the oil of your labors; * and they acclaim you, O venerable father Hilarion. 1. Strong is the love of the Lord for us; he is faithful forever. Tone 4: Enlightened by the knowledge of God, * your spirit triumphed over the bodily passions * without being stained by mire here below. * But you bore the image of our King, * reflecting the beauty of God * so as to be in his likeness * through the work of the Holy Spirit, * O splendor of monks, O venerable father Hilarion! Apostichera From the Octoechos for Tuesday Evening in Tone 1 Tone 1: The cross was planted upon the place of the skull; and from the everlasting spring that flowed from the side of the Savior, it brought forth for us the Flower of Immortality. I have lifted up my eyes to You enthroned in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters, as the eyes of a 6

7 maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord our God until He has mercy on us. The precious cross of the Savior is our unshakable wall; for all of us, who have put our hope in it, are saved. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us; for we have been filled with shame; our soul is all too full of the mockery of the rich, of the contempt of the proud. How beautiful is the manner of your exchange, O Saints; for you have given your blood and received heaven. Truly, you have done well! You have obtained immortality by forsaking corruptible things. Making a single choir with the angels, you sing unceasingly the praises of the consubstantial Trinity. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. When she beheld the Lamb hanging on the cross, the undefiled Virgin lamented and cried: O my Child, what is this strange and most glorious sight? How is it that He Who holds all things in His hands is nailed in the flesh to the wood?

8 Troparia for a Minor Fast Tone 4: Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos! Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. For you gave birth to Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of our souls. Prostration Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: Tone 4: O Baptizer of Christ, remember us all, that we be delivered from our transgressions; for you have been given grace to intercede on our behalf. Prostration Now and ever and forever. Amen. Tone 4: Pray for us, O holy apostles and all you saints, that we be delivered from danger and afflictions, for we have you as our fervent intercessors before the Savior. Prostration Tone 1: Beneath your compassion we take refuge, O Virgin Theotokos. Despise not our prayers in our need, but you, but deliver us from all dangers, for you alone are pure and blessed. 8
