3 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT (Readings taken from the web page of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, org) EPISTLE: HEBREWS 1:10-2:3 At the beginning, O Lord, you established the earth, and the heavens are the works of your hands. They will perish, but you remain;and they will all grow old like a garment. You will roll them up like a cloak,and like a garment they will be changed.but you are the same, and your years will have no end. But to which of the angels has he ever said: Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? Therefore, we must attend all the more to what we have heard, so that we may not be carried away. For if the word announced through angels proved firm, and every transgression and disobedience received its just recompense, how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? Announced originally through the Lord, it was confirmed for us by those who had heard. GOSPEL: MARK 2:1-12 When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it became known that he was at home. Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them, not even around the door, and he preached the word to them. They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd, they opened up the roof above him. After they had broken through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Child, your sins are forgiven. Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves, Why does this man speak that way?* He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins? Jesus immediately knew in his mind what they were thinking to themselves, so he said, Why are you thinking such things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Rise, pick up your mat and walk? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth he said to the paralytic, I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home. He rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away in the sight of everyone. They were all astounded and glorified God, saying, We have never seen anything like this. 5 on Temporary Assignment has been appointed administrator for St. Irene Byzantine Catholic in Portland, Oregon. Fr. Joe will begin serving the parish until a permanent admisnistrator is appointed. He will be in Portland from Sunday, March 31 until Pentecost Sunday, June 9 and then return to St. Stephen s. We ask God s blessings on while he is serving the parish in Portland. If it is Friday in Lent, then it is time for our LENTEN FISH FRY! This year, we invite everyone to save Friday evenings in Lent from 5 to 7 p.m. at our parish hall. As always, volunteers are most welcome to help make these events happen smoothly for the benefit of our parish family. Please sign the volunteer work list for the Fish Fry which is located on the coffee counter in the parish hall. We need a Set-up crew, Dinner crew and Clean-up crew. As we are moving to paper products and disposable cutlery, your donations of these would be most helpful as well as cake mixes and frosting. 2 boxes of same cake mix & same frosting please. An opportunity for women seeking holiness at Lent: Our Women s Group Fr. Diodoro awaits our Women s Group members and any woman of good will 18 years and older to the next meetings this month on Monday the 11th and 18th at 6 p.m. in the Cathedral, following Lenten Compline at 5 p.m. IT S BACK, THANKS TO THE G.C.U.: St. Patrick s Day Dinner, now on March 17! Our Greek Catholic Union Lodge is serving dinner for St. Patrick s Day (Sunday, March 17) after the Divine Liturgy at the Parish Hall. Tickets are $12 each for adults and $8 for children. If you could use an extra $1,000, then raffle tickets are available to you for $10 each. Net proceeds will go to Americare Hospice. We hope that our parishioners will amlke the most of this opportunity to celebrate tastily this popular feast day. In addition, our G.C.U. lodge thanks everyone who heped with the St. Valentine s Day brunch in February. $743 was raised for our seminary! Without our holy rollers and people who would like to learn these skills, it would be tragic to lose what we have come to love along with a key way to raise funds for our beloved parish. Therefore, with heartfelt thanks to our veteran holy rollers, we invite people of good will to join our selfless holy rollers at our baking days scheduled for Monday, March 18, Tuesday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 20 at our parish hall, starting at 8 a.m. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER: EPARCHIAL APPEAL 2019 We have begun the 2019 Appeal for the Eparchy of Phoenix. By now you all have received your pledge forms and information about donating. We hope you will choose from the various options of donating: cash, checks, credit cards and online donations. We are asking each household to donate $275, but of course larger amounts are welcome. Your generosity to the Eparchial Appeal not only helps to solidify us as a parish but also as an eparchy. Much can be accomplished by our Eparchy of Phoenix because of your generosity and commitment to the appeal. Our parish goal is $41, We have started so far with $850 in contributions or 2% of our goal to date. Healing for Soul & Body are Available from the Eastern Catholic Clergy of Arizona On Sunday, March 31 at 6 p.m., there will be a Healing Service (a.k.a. Anointing Service) at Holy Dormition Ukrainian Catholic Church (3720 W. Maryland Ave., Phoenix). After the Healing Service, Confessions will be available. During Great and Holy Lent, the best way to prepare for the Resurrection of Christ is the Mystery of Repentance!
