7 THE HOLY AND GREAT FAST All days of the Great Fast are days of Alleluia, unless otherwise noted. (Days of Alleluia are days that the Divine Liturgy are not be celebrated, because we fast from praying the Anaphora). On each day, the schedule of services begins with Matins in the morning to Vespers on the evening of the day itself. However, the commemoration of the saint is anticipated as usual. Therefore, the stichera for the saint sung at Vespers are those of the saint whom we remember on the following day. During the Great Fast, prostrations are taken at the end of Vespers and Matins. The Great Fast is our penitential preparation for the great feast of Pascha (Passover). As such, it is one of the most ancient parts of the liturgical year. Its forty days symbolizes the forty years the Israelites wandered in the desert, while the Divine Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified Gifts is the fulfillment of the promise of the manna, as St. John wrote, So Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you it was not Moses who gave bread from heaven; my Father give you the true bread from heaven (John 6:32). In the Great Fast, we imitate Jesus our Lord who fasted for forty days in the desert following his baptism. The feast of Pascha was also the time for baptisms, and so the Great Fast was a time of preparation for baptism. Our observance of the Great Fast, therefore, is a renewal of our baptismal fervor. During the First Week of the Great Fast, at Vespers, we read the story of the fall of Adam and Eve. In the Great Fast, abstinence from meat, fish, dairy products, alcohol and foods cooked in oil was prescribed for all days, except days of mitigation. All Saturdays and Sundays, February 24, March 9, Wednesday to Friday of the Fifth Week, the Pre-festive Day and Otdanije (Leave-taking) of Annunciation were mitigations from wine and oil. The Feast of the Annunciation (March 24) and Palm Sunday were general mitigations. The Ruthenian Metropolia prescribes strict abstinence (from meat and dairy products) on the First Monday of the Great Fast (Pure Monday) and on Great & Holy Friday, and abstinence from meat on all Wednesdays and Fridays. Sunday of Cheese-fare: Expulsion of Adam from Paradise As we begin the Great Fast, the Church reminds us of Adam s expulsion from Paradise. God commanded Adam to fast (Gen. 2:16), but he did not obey. Because of their disobedience, Adam and Eve were cast out of Eden and lost the life of blessedness, knowledge of God, and communion with Him, for which they were created. Both they and their descendants became heirs of death and corruption. Let us consider the benefits of fasting, the consequences of disobedience, and recall our fallen state. Today we are invited to cleanse ourselves of evil through fasting and obedience to God. Our

8 fasting should not be a negative thing or a mere abstention from certain foods. It is an opportunity to free ourselves from the sinful desires and urges of our fallen nature, and to nourish our souls with prayer, repentance, to participate in church services, and partake of the life-giving Mysteries of Christ. At Forgiveness Vespers we sing: Let us begin the time of fasting in light, preparing ourselves for spiritual efforts. Let us purify our soul, let us purify our body. As we abstain from food, let us abstain from all passion and enjoy the virtues of the spirit... CHEESE-FARE SUNDAY/ FORGIVENESS SUNDAY EPISTLE: ROMANS 13:11b-14:4 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. Who are you to judge someone else s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. GOSPEL: MATTHEW 6:14-21 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
