No, I tell you, but rather division. - Luke 12:51 This summer, like most, is all-too-quickly slipping away, and with it my time at Our Lady of the Lake is drawing to a close. Already I have received many gracious expressions of gratitude for my meager contributions to the parish over the past couple of months. In all sincerity, however, I feel it is rather my duty to express my thanks to you, not only for your warm and generous welcome to me during my brief stay here, but most of all for your profound witness of faith. It is such a consolation, in these often troubling times, to find a community so dedicated to our Lord Jesus Christ and to the service of His Church. Believe me when I tell you what an encouragement this has been to me as I continue along the path of formation for the priesthood. As our scripture readings this weekend remind us, the path of faith is never easy. Indeed, it can be the greatest of challenges. But it is important to know that we never walk it alone. We are always united with our Lord and with one another as we march forward in our life s mission. Jesus tells us today that He came to cast fire upon the earth, not ultimately the fire of wrath or destruction, but the fire of the divine love for which we were made. We are all called to enter into this fire, to allow it to consume us, and to become agents of its spread throughout the world. I thank God that I have seen this fire already blazing here in Mound, and would ask you to pray for me that it might burn also in my breast as I return to seminary. If all goes well in the coming year, I will be ordained with my classmates at the end of next May in the Cathedral of Saint Paul. It would be an honor to me if any of you can make it for that occasion. Most of all, though, please pray for me and my classmates that we might be good and holy priests, and know of my continued prayers for this parish community. Thank you. 3 Pastoral Ministry OLL is hosting the Birthday Party at Lake Minnetonka Shores on Friday, August 26 th, from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Are you available to help cut and serve birthday cake and coffee? Thanks! - Sr. Carrie Liturgy Matters: Another gesture for those of us in the assembly is bowing. We bow our heads at the name of Jesus and during the Creed describing the incarnation of Jesus. We bow in reverence before receiving Holy Communion. Liturgy is very physical. Our singing, responding, and praying are all ways to participate more fully. West Suburban Grief Coalition meets at St. Barnabas Church, Old Rockford Road in Plymouth The group meets on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:00. August 18 th : Loss of Dreams August 25 th : Sharing Personal Grief Journey s The Council of Catholic Women operates the Country Store, Book Nook, and the Donut Booth at the Incredible Festival. We need donations of homemade baked goods, homemade canned goods, garden flowers & produce, and good, used books! Please drop items off at the Church Office. Daily Unlimited Ride Wristbands Online Price: $25/wristband Regular price: $30/wristband after Friday, Sept. 9 th, at 1:00pm Online wristband purchases may be picked up at the Festival Ticket Booth. Wristbands may also be purchased in the Church Office at the discounted price of $25.00 until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9 th. Each wristband is good for one full day of rides at the Festival. Wristbands may be used any one of the three days at the Festival. LIGHT FOR THE WEEK: The Gospel speaks of households having divisions. As faithful followers of Jesus, divisions may be caused as consequences of witnessing to the Gospel. In spite of divisions, Jesus does give us peace as in his resurrection announcement, Peace be with you that comes from living the call to be faithful to God s will. We pray for those in need. May the Lord comfort them in their time of sickness and bless those who care for them. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS St. Michael Medals Do you have a family member or friend actively serving in the military? You can request a St. Michael Medal to be sent to them from the Knights of Columbus. There is no cost to you or the military service person. Please send the name of the person in the military, their rank, branch of service, and address to Dave Wilson, Grand Knight, at wilson6647@aim.com. He will forward the information to State Chaplain Raul, who will send the medal (and a prayer book if requested) directly to the serviceman/woman. 3

4 Marriage in Christ This Fall we will begin a 5-week program for any couples who wish to strengthen their marriage and grow closer to Christ. It s designed for the newly married, for those who ve been married for 50 years - or anyone in between! Sometimes couples can grow apart over the years and lose their focus because of all the distractions of today s busy world. This program is designed to help couples come back together and strengthen their relationships to each other and to God. If interested, contact Carla at: x145 or clabore@ourladyofthelake.com. Bible Study Paul s Letter to the Romans Paul writes his letter to the Roman Christian community in order to get to know the people there. This city was the political & financial center of the world at that time, so it was important that the faith be properly understood by them. His letter explains some of the basic theology of the developing Christian faith. Paul had intended to visit them in person, but in the meantime, he was arrested and taken there in chains, and eventually martyred. Mark your calendars for the next Bible Study, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 20 th, at 1:30pm in the Church Library. Faith Formation Attention all families with children newborn to age 5! You are invited to a picnic on Sunday, August 28 th, at 11:30am in the Presentation Room. Join us for food, fellowship, a chance to meet other young families, and to see how OLL can help you grow in your faith and pass that faith on to your children. You can still register for Faith Formation Classes beginning in September! Forms are available in the Church Office or on the website at ourladyofthelake.com. For more information about our programs, contact Kathy at x147. A Catechist Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, September 7 th, from 6:30-8:00pm in the Presentation Room. All catechists and assistants are invited for dinner followed by a discussion on effective teaching techniques. Catechist manuals and calendars will be provided at that time. This training, along with a completed background check and signed Code of Conduct, is required for all volunteers who work with children, youth, and vulnerable adults. Grotto of the Redemption Bus Trip - NEW DATE! - Saturday, October 1 st 7:30am - 7:00pm The Grotto is often considered the Eighth Wonder of the World and the Iowan magazine has described the Grotto as a Miracle in Stone. A composite of nine separate grottos, each portrays a scene in the life of Christ. The largest man-made grotto in the world, it contains the largest collection of precious stones and gems found anywhere in one location. $50 includes Charter Bus Transportation, Donation to the Shrine, and a Guided Tour Complete and return this form with payment to Faith Formation or drop a labeled envelope in the Collection Basket at Mass no later than September 1 st.
