1 Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church Fr. Tony O Neill, Pastor 2385 Commerce Blvd. Mound, MN ourladyofthelake.com MONTHLY MAIL-OUT BULLETIN VOLUME CXV November 25 th, 2018 Feast of Christ the King Jesus answered, My kingdom does not belong to this world. - John 18:36 Growing up, one of the things we would often do around the dinner table was share a good part and bad part of our day. In my men s small group, we often share highlights and lowlights. Each Saturday, as several of us priests share dinner together, we will have a round of thanks where we highlight what we are thankful for from the past week. All of these examples help illustrate two important aspects of gratitude in our lives. The first aspect is that it is important that we reflect on our day or week to be reminded for what we are thankful. For some of us, it can be easiest to see our failures first, and fail to see the positive things that have occurred in our lives. But it is an important part of our spiritual life to recognize the ways we have been blessed. One way we can do this, is as we do an examination of conscience at the end of the day, we can also take a few moments to recognize how God has been active in our lives that day. The second is that merely recognizing gratitude is not enough; it is important that we share it. When we share with someone what we are grateful for in our life, or how we have been blessed, it helps solidify it as being true. Then, in times when we may feel discouraged, those friends or family with whom we have shared our blessings can remind us of the ways we have been blessed by God. This is one of the key ways that we can keep gratitude growing in our hearts more than just one day a year; we can foster a grateful heart every day through recognizing and sharing our many blessings. Fr. Peter Do you need a ride to OLL Church Services? WeCAB is a local organization of volunteers helping other community members who no longer drive or cannot use other forms of transportation and who live in Maple Plain, Mound, Minnetrista, Navarre, Spring Park, and St. Boni. There is no charge for the service, but if possible, contributions are always appreciated to their non-profit organization. If you are in need of this service or if you know of someone who is, please call Eucharistic Adoration Adoration means entering the depths of our hearts in communion with the Lord, who makes Himself bodily present in the Eucharist. In the monstrance, He always entrusts Himself to us and asks to be united with His Presence, with His risen Body. -- Pope Benedict XVI Spend time this week with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration in the St. John Paul II Chapel on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday from 8:30am to 10:00pm. 3 Liturgy Seeking God, Encountering God Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe John 18:33b, 37 My kingdom does not belong to this world. There is no inkling of military conquest nor abrupt action in Jesus interaction with Pilate, who simply does not get it. Pilate has a narrow understanding of power and truth. With calmness and peace, Jesus responds: Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. For us today: What is the essential truth revealed by Jesus in the Gospels? What are the characteristics and the values of the kingdom of God? Edward Hicks, a self-taught artist, painted The Peaceable Kingdom hundreds of times mostly likely in his effort of refining it. Our reflection on the Gospel message will help us to one day get it right. Peace, Sr. Carrie Link We pray for those in need. Please keep the following individuals in your prayers: Chris A. Mike Paxton Russell Barger Maddie Poranski Bob Blake Marcia Prins Dan Entinger Bobby Reil Dolores Kelly Adam Richardt Jennifer Lacy Paul Schueller Andra Olson Mike Schulz We pray for those in the Military: Travis B. Due to many factors such as vacations, business trips, school events, and sickness, the average parishioner attends Sunday Mass at his or her home parish 40 weeks per year. In addition, we occasionally forget to bring our offering envelope or checkbook to Mass. When we miss a weekend Mass or two, for whatever reason, we all intend to make it up on our return. But you know what they say about Good Intentions. That means your parish may be receiving 20% less than you pledged. In today s digital age, many people do all their bill paying using automatic banking or credit cards. Why not use these convenient methods for your contributions to Our Lady of the Lake? Benefits to You: Convenient Consistent Safe & Secure Go Green - less paper Schedule to coincide with payday Possible credit card rewards/miles Excellent tax records available 24/7 Easy to change anytime Supports one-time donations Benefits to OLL: Predictable/steady income during the year Safety Less administrative effort for the staff Increased contributions To sign-up or if you have any questions, contact Char Nee at or cnee@ourladyofthelake.com. 5

8 Advent Evening Prayer Following the example of our Jewish ancestors, the church has continued to gather for prayer at morning, evening, and night. These are known as the hinge moments of daily life: times to praise God for a new morning, to thank the Father for Christ who is our light as evening comes, and to invoke God s strong protection through the hours of night. Historically this form of daily prayer gave shape to what became known as the Divine Office or Liturgy of the hours. In recent times these prayers have been restored to some of their original simplicity and are again being prayed in parishes. This Advent OLL is offering all parishioners the opportunity to experience the beauty of Evening Prayer on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 9, at 6:30 p.m. We have chosen these dates to accommodate the youth who will be joining us. As darkness falls and candles are lit, we will sing praise and psalms and ask for God s mercy on our needs, those of the church and of the world. You will feel the peace and calm of this prayer form in this season of waiting. For a preview of Evening Prayer see the format in our Worship Hymnal pp Please mark your calendars for this beautiful and enriching prayer experience. Liturgy Committee 8

9 Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School - Building the Spirit November, 2018 A Message from the Principal Becky Kennedy We completed our NWEA MAP testing during September in K-8th grade classes. NWEA MAP assessment is a unique assessment to each student to measure their strengths and challenges based on their responses to test questions. This is not the paper and pencil test that we all took in grade school. It starts off with grade level questions based on standards then becomes more difficult or easier based on the students answers. Fall test scores are used as a baseline of what each student knows and teachers then create a plan to keep moving each child forward. NWEA provides great detail for teachers of what standards each student shows proficiency in and what standards they still need to master. The average score for the nation is 50%; think of the bell curve. There is no pass or fail or perfect score. When looking at scores, we need to remember that this is based on one test on one day. Sometimes kids have a bad day and sometimes kids guess really well. These scores are just one of the resources teachers use to plan each day and assess how we are doing. Averages for Our Lady of the Lake School are listed below. Fall 2018 Reading K OLL Mean National Benchmark Math K OLL Mean National Benchmark Rake-a-thon Update We currently have raised over $34,000 with more money to still come in. We have exceeded our goal thanks to our many school families and donors. We wish to thank our rake-a-thon chairs and our spaghetti dinner chairs for their awesome work in organizing the event, and to all volunteers who donated their time and efforts. Great job, everyone! November Service Project Our November Service Project will be collecting baby care items for Abria Pregnancy Resource Center in Minneapolis and St. Paul. This nonprofit organization offers life-affirming support and options for new mothers and families. OLL Band & Choir Our middle school band and choir is off to a good start this year. They are going to be performing at Eden Prairie Mall on December 14 th, at 10:15am. 9
