1 July 16, 2017 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings IS 55: 10-11; PS 65: 10-14; ROM 8: 18-23; MT 13: 1-23 In today s Gospel Reading from St. Matthew, Christ is asked why He speaks in parables. His response in part is the statement, To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. Christ s parables, of which there are many, may not always make sense to us, unless we consider them carefully. Christ s speaking in and relating to parables has everything to do with what we call The Word. If we listen conscientiously to the Word (represented by our readings at Masses and to the homily we hear), we may, and perhaps even should, grasp the meaning. The Word is filled with the deeper truths of the Bible. God opens our eyes and ears to these truths, but we must be amenable to them and must be willing to try to understand them. Too often we merely listen and do not hear. We go through the motions, when our total concentration should be on what we are being told. First of all we need to appreciate that only God can open the eyes and ears of each of us. One of the popular phrases about stewardship is an attitude of gratitude. That is so important. On a bad day, even the most hardened of us can find one thing for which to be grateful, and that can adjust everything in our thought processes. Are we closed to the teachings of Jesus? If we open our minds and concentrate, the Lord s teachings may unfold to us like nothing we have ever experienced previously. Prayer Intentions of the Holy Father Month of July Theme: Lapsed Christians That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life. Adoration "In our self-centered culture and classic American emphasis on work, we often feel we have to accomplish something during our times of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. We rate our experience by how 'good' our prayer was, how heartfelt our devotion was, or how focused we could remain. Yet prayer and contemplation are fundamentally God's work, in which we are invited to participate. We need only to give Him the opening, and He will do the rest. By coming to adoration, we are handing Him the keys to our hearts, allowing the rays of His love and grace to bathe our souls in the light of His Presence, as the rays of the sun bathe our bodies in light. If we can take the time to pull away from the busyness and distractions of life and just sit at His feet, He will lead us." Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. Enrich your summer. Strengthen your relationship with Jesus. Adoration does not take the summer off. Adoration - Wednesdays. Exposition at 10am. Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary immediately following 12:15pm Mass. Words to Ponder "I call upon you, my God, my mercy, who made me, and did not forget me, although I forgot you. I call you into my soul, which you prepare to accept you by the longing that you breathe into it. Do not desert me now when I call upon you, for before I called upon you, you went ahead and helped me, and repeatedly you urged me on by many different words, so that from afar I would hear you, and be converted, and call upon you as you called to me." St. Augustine Live the Liturgy- Inspiration for the Week We are reminded today that the seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest. What kind of soil do we have? God's word needs to take root in our lives so that we can remain faithful not only when life is easy but when it gets challenging and difficult. Anxiety, worldly cares and concerns, personal challenges, experiences of loss and death, and even fear and disappointment can prevent us from trusting God's promise. We can even find ourselves doubting God's fidelity and lose touch with his presence. Our soil can easily become rocky, hard, and unyielding. Open your eyes and ears today and let all that is around you lead you to God's presence. Then, do all in your power to cultivate and nurture a life that is eager to receive him and fertile for growing the seeds of God's kingdom. St. Gabriel the Archangel 4 Colorado Springs, CO

5 Diocesan Pastoral Plan Year II: The City on a Hill Focus: Young Adults (Ages 18-30) Overall Goal: For young adults to be transformed by the Mass as the source and summit of our faith, and allow this to flow into their discipleship. Areas for Reflection: 1) But Only Say the Word Theological Statement: The celebrating assembly is the community of the baptized who, by regeneration and the anointing of the Holy Spirit, are consecrated to be a spiritual house and a holy priesthood, that through all the works of Christian men they may offer spiritual sacrifices. This common priesthood is that of Christ the sole priest, in which all his members participate: Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy, and to which the Christian people, a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a redeemed people, have a right and an obligation by reason of their Baptism. -CCC-1141 i. Do I actively participate at Mass? Do I meditate on how the readings apply to my daily life? What is God trying to teach me today? Why is silence important at different moments at Mass? What does it mean to be recollected before going to Communion? ii. Do I believe that the Mass can transform my life and God can work through me in the world? iii. Do I love prayer and the sacraments enough to talk to other people about them? 6 New CD s in the Lighthouse Kiosk Drawing Strength from Our Lady of Sorrows Speaker and author Kimberly Hahn, wife of Dr. Scott Hahn and mother of six, is a convert to the Catholic faith. Although honoring Mary was difficult for Kimberly to initially understand, she began to encounter Mary's loving guidance in little ways on a daily basis. In this presentation, she reflects on the joys and sorrows that Mary prayerfully experienced during her time on Earth, and shares how her example leads us closer to Christ. All Things are Possible for God As a young man, the last thing Fr. Joshua Waltz ever thought he would be was a Catholic priest. But a series of choices some bad and some good ultimately led him to enter the seminary. In this talk, Fr. Waltz shares an incredible vocation story that involves heartbreak, robbers, Europe, and several miracles all showing that there is nothing more exciting than a life lived for Jesus Christ. 7 Weekly faith topic Godparents Paul Turner Everyone baptized into the church receives a godparent. Godparents assist the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it. That means we ask very little or very much, depending on how you look at it. To be a godparent you must be 16, baptized, confirmed in the Catholic Church, taking communion with us, leading a life in harmony with faith, and not a parent of the one to be baptized. Godparents may be chosen by the one to be baptized, by the parents or guardians, or even by the pastor or parish minister. A baptized non-catholic may serve as a witness to the baptism if a Catholic godparent also takes part. Only one godparent is needed, although two may serve. The baptismal godparent becomes the preferred sponsor for confirmation. Very often people will ask a family member to be a godparent. This has the advantage of binding families together. However a godparent from the parish community may make a better choice. A parishioner can set a good example for the child from week to week and can represent the role of the entire parish community bringing Christ to each new member. Some families have further expectations of godparents of young children. They may expect a gift at the child s birthday or further assistance throughout life. Some godparents devote a lot of time with their godchildren; others do not. The church does not specify these extended responsibilities; families may discuss them with their godparents. Godparents for adults play an important role during lent. They support the catechumen at the rite of election and the scrutinies in addition to the rites of initiation. They usually are the sponsors who have accompanied the catechumens throughout their preparation. If the adult joining the church has already been baptized, his/her sponsor remains a sponsor since a godparent already exists. During infant baptism, we ask godparents if they will help the parents in their duty as Christian parents. We invite them to renew their baptismal vows together with the parents, and they may assist in lighting the child s candle. However, parents preferably hold the child for the baptism.
