1 January 20, 2019 The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS IS 62:1-5; PS 96: 1-3,7-10; 1 COR 12:4-11; JN 2:1-11 Today s Gospel reading from John recounts the familiar story of the wedding feast at Cana when Jesus launched His public ministry by performing His first miracle at his mother s request. In the midst of the feast, the Blessed Mother noticed that the wine had run out and pointed out the problem to Jesus. Then, she gave the servants instructions that are equally applicable to us modern-day stewards, saying, Do whatever He tells you. Jesus gives the servants a simple and seemingly mundane task, telling them to fill some stone jars with water. They did what He told them to do. And Jesus used their obedience in the accomplishment of that simple task to perform His first miracle, turning the water into the choicest wine. Our Lord didn t have to include those servants in order to perform this miracle He chose to. And today, 2,000 plus years later, He still chooses to include us in the performance of His miracles through our cooperation with Him in using the gifts and talents He has given us. What a privilege! Let us take care to listen to our Blessed Mother: let s examine our lives this week to see if we really are doing whatever He tells us, cooperating with God to make the best use of the gifts He has given us for the benefit of those around us. If we all take this call seriously, He will perform miracles in our families and our parish. 2 FLU SEASON For the health and safety of our community during this flue season, Fr. Kirk has decided to refrain from distributing the Precious Blood to the assembly. We will resume after the worst of the flu season. Also, during Sign of Peace, please respect those who do not wish to shake hands. Please offer a slight head bow. A hand sanitizer station has been set up in the Narthex. MARIAN HOUSE VOLUNTEER We are looking for an individual to lead the monthly Marian House volunteer effort for St. Gabriel. This is great opportunity to get involved in our parish as well as the local community, serving those in need of a nutritious, warm meal. The position involves sending out a monthly bulletin announcement requesting volunteers, passing along the names to the staff at the Marian House and of course, volunteering your time when possible. If interested, please contact Cyndy Pylkka at or SECOND ANNUAL OUTREACH COMMITTEE SOCKS AND T-SHIRT COLLECTION FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN January 12-February Please donate new white socks and new and gently used t- shirts for the Marian House to help those in need in our community. Questions: Please contact Barbara Green SCAM ALERT It has come to our attention that there are several and mail scams going around to our church community. Recently several parishioners have received an from Fr. Kirk requesting assistance in some way (either by money, I Tunes cards etc). These are scams and we are urging you to delete the immediately and do not respond to it or open any links in the message. Please be aware that Fr. Kirk will NEVER contact you via asking for assistance. If you should receive an from any staff member of St. Gabriel, please make sure to check the ENTIRE address. We will ALWAYS use the saintgabriel.net address and it will have our church logo at the end of the message. An additional way to determine if the is from Fr. Kirk is that he will sign +JMJ+ after his name. Checking addresses and NOT responding to pleas is a good practice to exercise when reading s from any source. If you should have any questions, please call the office at GABRIEL S GIFTS FOOD PANTRY COLLECTION IS JANUARY 26 AND 27 Our monthly Gabriel s Gifts food pantry collection for Mercy s Gate is next weekend. To learn more about how you can make a difference, please visit DISCIPLES ON THE WAY These are trying and confusing times, and the confidence to explain and defend the Catholic faith is more important than ever. Please contact Mary Simmons at or Julie Bailey at the Diocese of Colorado Springs Respect Life Apostolate. THE 24HR KNIGHT As Saint Gabriel s Knight of Columbus recruiter I often hear the reply I don t have much time to give to the Knights, so why should I join? It s a common concern among many prospects that they just don t have the time to be a part of the Knights of Columbus. Today s young man faces many commitments. From his duty to his family to his obligation to his work place, there are constant calls on his time. Understanding that we all have commitments and responsibilities, would you be able to give 24 hours a year to the Knights of Columbus? With just a 24 hour a year commitment you could make a positive difference to tour community and Church. Below is an illustration of just how little time it takes to be an active part of the Knights of Columbus. Even with this minimal commitment you could be an important part of a council and reap the benefits of what membership in the Knights of Columbus has to offer you and your family. Below is an example of 24 hour commitment: * 2 hours a year volunteering at the council s annual funds drive for people with intellectual disabilities. * 2 hours a year attending, with your family, two council corporate Communions or prayer services at the parish. * 12 hours a year on a council-sponsored Church, community, council family or youth project of your choosing such as the Youth Annual Free Throw Contest, Lenten Fish Fry s or Monthly K of C sponsored last Sunday of Month Pancake Breakfast. * 2 hours a year attending one council meeting. (If it s a well-run interesting meeting maybe you might even come back for a second.) * 4 hours a year assisting with Briarfest activities * 2 hours working on projects our Pastor Father Kirk has asked for Knights of Columbus assistance. When you look at commitment opportunities such as the ones listed above it doesn t seem very intimidating at all. There are many other types of program options not mentioned above. There are 8,760 hours in a year. By giving the Knights of Columbus 24 of those hours (less than.3 percent), a man can be a better Catholic, a better father, a better husband and a better person. Think of the difference the Knights of Columbus can make in our communities if you were to join us. We will be available after masses the weekend of January to answer any questions you may have about the Knights of Columbus and the activities we support. In the interim if you have questions or have already filled out a Knights Membership Document please feel free to contact Saint Gabriel s Knights of Columbus Membership Director Vic Garcia at or call (719) /(719) (Please leave a message and he ll call you back). And again we available to answer question after masses January. ADORATION OF OUR LORD Jesus loves us so much that He Chose to remain with us in His glorified human body veiled in the Holy Eucharist. How do we repay this love? By simply visiting Him. For more information contact: Kathy Thomas at or PARISH LIST Keep abreast of all that is happening at St. Gabriel by signing up for the parish list. You can do this by going to the parish website at and clicking on Parish Info and selecting List Subscriptions and then filling out your address under Parish News. 7 ORDINARY TIME PAUL TURNER Ordinary Time, the longest season of the church year, fills the weeks which do not celebrate a specific aspect of the mystery of Christ. It s the no-particular-reason season. Christmas Time honors the birth of Christ. Easter Time rejoices in the resurrection. Ordinary Time is devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. The number of the weeks of Ordinary Time replaces the old counting of weeks after Epiphany and after Pentecost. The old calendar suggested that Pentecost ran for six months. The new calendar gives Pentecost a day. Then we return to Ordinary Time. At first glance the principles of Ordinary Time seem basic enough. Start counting the weeks after Christmas Time. Break for Lent and Easter. Resume after Pentecost and keep counting till Advent. Basically, that s how it works. But we have a few quirks. For example, there is no First Sunday in Ordinary Time ; however, there is a first week. Usually Christmas Time ends on a Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. The lectionary also calls it the First Sunday in Ordinary Time, but it is part of Christmas Time. (Some years the Baptism of the Lord falls on a Monday, but that s another story.) Ordinary Time gets underway on a weekday. When the next Sunday rolls around we start week two. On the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, we see the last of Ordinary Time until after Pentecost. Even then, it emerges only on weekdays. Trinity Sunday always follows Pentecost Sunday, and the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Lord comes the next Sunday in the United States. (In countries where this solemnity is a holy day, it falls on a Thursday.) So when the numbered Sundays in Ordinary Time return in summer, we start out a little higher than where we left off. Sometimes we skip one or two entire weeks of Ordinary Time during the Easter break. We want to close the Sundays of the year with Christ the King, one week before Advent. Christ the King always falls on the 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time. So, we determine the week number after Pentecost not based on where we left off before Lent but counting backwards from Christ the King. One or two weeks may disappear, but Ordinary Time still serves the complete mystery of Christ.
