1 January 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings IS 42:1-4, 6-7 or IS 40:1-5, 9-11; PS 29:1-4, 9-10 or PS 104:1B-4, 24-25, 27-30; ACTS 10: or TI 2:11-14; 3: 4-7; LK 3:15-16; As we celebrate this feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we can study His actions at the Jordan River as a powerful example of servant leadership. We see in Jesus a type of leadership that is characterized by humility and leading by example. Certainly the sinless Savior did not need a baptism of repentance! But Jesus humbly made Himself one with his people to draw us to Him and create a relationship with us so that we would be open to His teachings and influence. As a servant leader, we also see that Jesus leads by example. He doesn t just tell the people they need to be baptized. He shows them how and does it Himself to teach them. To lead like Jesus, we, too, must walk the walk and not just talk the talk. If we want those we lead to be generous and hard-working, then we must show them how to do this by demonstrating generosity and hard work ourselves. Immediately after His baptism, we learn of the powerful affirmation of the Father who opens the heavens, sends the Holy Spirit upon Jesus in bodily form and says audibly, This is my beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased. Let us be filled with gratitude for our amazing God and be reminded that when we are grateful followers of Jesus and servant-leaders in imitation of Him, the Father will be well-pleased with us, too. Recognize God in your Ordinary Moments What have been the most significant moments in your life? You probably celebrate your birthday every year, so the day you were born must be pretty important. How about elementary, high school, or college graduations? Hopefully you do something special on or around your wedding anniversary if you are married. Do you have children? The birth of each child is probably near the top on the list of moments you will never forget. Then there are the sad moments of life: deaths, breakups, and tragedies. As you reflect on all these moments, you can see that you would not be who you are today without having experienced them. Of course as a Christian, you have one moment in time that has had an even greater impact on you and perhaps it didn't even come to mind: your Baptism. You might say you don't remember it because you were an infant. Perhaps you do not even know the date it took place. You might not feel like it has had much impact on you at all. However, it has made all the difference. Whether you feel the difference or not, on that day you were made a new creation in Jesus Christ. You were marked for Him with an indelible mark that no one can remove, not even you. On that day, you inherited a tradition and lineage of faith that has changed the face of the earth. Today, that baptismal grace beckons you to a real and substantial relationship with the One whose name was invoked on that day. It also calls you to respond with a stewardship way of life, where your gifts make a difference and glorify God. If today is the day you start taking all this seriously, you get to add a new moment to your list. St. Gabriel the Archangel 3 Colorado Springs, CO

5 Words of Wisdom The word rosary means crown of roses, that is to say that every time people say the Rosary devoutly they place a crown of one hundred and fifty-three white roses and sixteen red roses upon the head of Jesus and Mary. Being heavenly flowers, these roses will never fade or lose their exquisite beauty. St. Louis de Monfort Catholic Charities Announcements Thank You! The 24hr Knight As Saint Gabriel s Knight of Columbus recruiter I often hear the reply I don t have much time to give to the Knights, so why should I join? It s a common concern among many prospects that they just don t have the time to be a part of the Knights of Columbus. Today s young man faces many commitments. From his duty to his family to his obligation to his work place, there are constant calls on his time. Understanding that we all have commitments and responsibilities, would you be able to give 24 hours a year to the Knights of Columbus? With just a 24 hour a year commitment you could make a positive difference to tour community and Church. Below is an illustration of just how little time it takes to be an active part of the Knights of Columbus. Even with this minimal commitment you could be an important part of a council and reap the benefits of what membership in the Knights of Columbus has to offer you and your family. Below is an example of 24 hour commitment: * 2 hours a year volunteering at the council s annual funds drive for people with intellectual disabilities. * 2 hours a year attending, with your family, two council corporate Communions or prayer services at the parish. * 12 hours a year on a council-sponsored Church, community, council family or youth project of your choosing such as the Youth Annual Free Throw Contest, Lenten Fish Fry s or Monthly K of C sponsored last day of Month Pancake Breakfast. * 2 hours a year attending one council meeting. (If it s a well-run interesting meeting maybe you might even come back for a second.) * 4 hours a year assisting with Briarfest activities * 2 hours working on projects our Pastor Father Kirk has asked for Knights of Columbus assistance. When you look at commitment opportunities such as the ones listed above it doesn t seem very intimidating at all. There are many other types of program options not mentioned above. There are 8,760 hours in a year. By giving the Knights of Columbus 24 of those hours (less than.3 percent), a man can be a better Catholic, a better father, a better husband and a better person. Think of the difference the Knights of Columbus can make in our communities if you were to join us. We will be available after masses the weekend of January to answer any questions you may have about the Knights of Columbus and the activities we support. In the interim if you have questions or have already filled out a Knights Membership Document please feel free to contact Saint Gabriel s Knights of Columbus Membership Director Vic Garcia at or call (719) /(719) (Please leave a message and he ll call you back). And again we available to answer question after masses January. 9 Days for Life Join thousands of Catholics nationwide in the annual pro-life novena, 9 Days for Life, Monday, January 14 Tuesday, January 22. 7 Baptism of the Lord January 13 "I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?" Jesus didn't need to be washed clean of any sin, and John the Baptist knew it. But nonetheless, Jesus was humble enough to be baptized like the rest of us. This humility is at the heart of Jesus' mission on earth. As Saint Paul says, Jesus "emptied himself...coming in human likeness...he humbled himself" (Phil 2:7-8). He did not need to become human, to be born of a woman into a poor family, or to suffer and die on the cross. Rather, Jesus freely chose to do all of these things out of love for us. And in the process, he gave us a model to follow. By being baptized, Jesus emphasized the importance of participating in this sacred action. And later in his ministry, he confirmed the significance of baptism when he instructed his apostles to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19). Through baptism, we become disciples of Jesus. As baptized Christians, we are both called and equipped to be Christ's followers, his pupils, and his friends. Today, we might ask ourselves if we are embracing this calling wholeheartedly. Do we follow Jesus' example of love for God and neighbor? Do we study his word and live by his teaching? Do we nurture our relationship with him, as we would with any friend? Jesus humbled himself for our sake. Let us show our gratitude by being his faithful disciples today and every day.
