1 July 1, 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS WIS 1: 13-15; 2: 23-24; PS 30: 2, 4-6, 11-13; 2 COR 8: 7, 9, 13-15; MK 5: Your abundance at the present time should supply their needs, so that their abundance may also supply your needs. This is the fourth time in 2 Corinthians, chapter 8 that St. Paul addresses the issue of giving. What Paul is trying to explain is that the motivation for giving should be similar to God s motivation for gifting us. In the passage which constitutes today s Second Reading Paul says, As you excel in every respect, in faith, discourse, knowledge, all earnestness, and in the love we have for you, may you excel in this gracious act also. In the original, Paul uses the old Greek word charis to describe the giving to which he is making reference. We can probably see that the roots of that word are very much the same as the roots of the word charity. Giving and sharing are definitely the work of God s grace in us. In fact, our motivation should be very much the same as that of the Lord. He gives to us because of Who He is, not because of what or who we are. We, too, must give if we wish to show holiness, or to at least aspire to it. That is also what we mean when we say that we are all called to stewardship, to be good stewards. It is one thing to be faithful, but it is another to give. At times we may think there are too many collections, but it is the results of these opportunities to give which support the Church s work both locally and around the globe. Assistant/Aide: The assistant/aide helps set up the classroom with needed supplies, make copies as requested, help with projects, and cleans up the classroom. If you feel called to serve, please contact Deacon Mike or Cindy, CANDLES Did you know that candles are lit for prayer intentions? To "light a candle for someone" indicates one's intention to say a prayer for another person, and the candle symbolizes that prayer. Pray for a special intention and ask for blessings for that person. In the lighting of candles, we remember and truly live the words of Our Lord: "I am the Light of the World." In the lighting of candles, we not only pray, but our prayers become smaller symbols of the One Light of Christ. In burning candles, our prayers rise to Heaven day and night. Prayers for the saint's intercessions are also common because of their friendship with God in Heaven. Saints are powerful intercessors. So make it a practice to light a candle for your loved ones often. St. Gabriel the Archangel 5 Colorado Springs, CO

Born to peasant parents in southern Italy, St. Maria Goretti was a devout girl whose life was marked by difficulty. Her father died when she was nine, leaving her single mother with six mouths to feed. Two neighbors helped on the family farm, including a young man named Alessandro. He began making crude comments towards Maria. She repeatedly denied him. After several years, Alessandro attacked Maria to force himself on her. She resisted and, in his anger, Alessandro stabbed her. Maria died from the wounds' infections, but her last words were "I forgive Alessandro Serenelli, and I want him with me in heaven forever." While he was in prison, Maria appeared to Alessandro with a bouquet of roses, one for each wound he inflicted. In a true miracle of mercy, Alessandro experienced repentance, became a Franciscan brother after his release, and was later present at Maria's canonization. St. Maria Goretti, pray for us! 7 WEEKLY FAITH TOPIC DRESS PAUL TURNER Our Sunday best used to represent the finest duds we owned. Time was, church was formal, and folks dressed that way. Of course dinner was formal too. So was theater. So was photography. Now it s different. People come to church wearing everything from tuxedos to cutoffs, from formal gowns to sandals. Society clings to few rules about dress. Restaurants make you wear shoes and shirts. People laugh at your bathrobe, curlers, and bunny slippers. A backless dress may be elegant at a Saturday wedding, but gauche on a Sunday morning. Under the roof of God s house, some dos and don'ts prevail, but there is no telling how the brothers and sisters will dress for the family faith meal. The advance of casual wear has succeeded in many parts of society, not just churches. What constitutes appropriate attire for business and leisure activities continues to fluctuate. Even when invitations specify formal wear, business clothes or casual dress, respondents may remain confused. Expectations for Sunday dress vary from one worshiper to the next. A young participant s outfit reveals some flesh. Some see no problem; other find it scandalous. Some cannot afford nice clothes; others are coming from work or stop on their way to play. At its best, the variety of church dress displays the universality of the call to worship. At its worst it shows carelessness and confusion. The harrumph-o-meter generally short circuits when a worshiper, who arrived expecting a place in the pew, serves as a communion minister, reader, or song leader for a short-handed celebration. Having communion offered to you from someone dressed in shorts and a grunge rock T-shirt may shake the most fervent worshiper s belief in the Body of Christ. However, ministers generally prefer to dress right. When duty calls them unprepared, they do their best with hearts of faith, seeking to serve, not to offend. When we prepare for church, charity demands consideration in our dress and moderation in our judgment. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E.
