1 February 11, 2018 Sixth day in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS LV 13: 1-2, 44-46; PS 32: 1-2, 5, 11; 1 COR 10:31 11: 1; MK 1: Often one of our human weaknesses has to do with us believing or thinking we know better than God in relation to what we do and what we do in relation to others. Of course, part of that has to do with our failure to pray and consult the Lord, or even more to make no effort to understand what God may be telling us. In today s Gospel Reading from St. Mark, we hear about Jesus curing a leper. In His instructions to the cured man, He says, See that you tell no one anything, Of course, the man pays no attention to this instruction from the Lord. Instead, The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. Surely the man meant well; in fact, he probably thought he was helping Jesus, but the reality as stated in the Gospel is that his disobedience hindered the ministry of Jesus, so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. We need to obey the Lord, and we should never think we have a better plan than He does. Even the eminent scientist Albert Einstein recognized how important Jesus teachings are. Einstein said, As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene no one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life. Thank you for your continued support of the Beacon of Faith Campaign. If you have any questions, please call Nancy or Melissa at the office at DEVOTION OF THE MONTH THE PASSION OF OUR LORD The month of February is traditionally dedicated to the Passion of Our Lord in anticipation of the liturgical season of Lent. In this month, we begin to meditate on the mystery of Jesus' sufferings which culminated in his death on the Cross for the redemption of mankind. Saints who had a special devotion to Christ's passion include St. Francis of Assisi, who was the first known saint to receive the stigmata; St. John of the Cross; St. Bridget of Sweden; and St. Catherine of Siena. DYNAMIC CATHOLIC-BEST LENT EVER Lent comes every year. It s meant to be an opportunity to examine our lives, give our struggles over to God, and invite him to help us grow in holiness as we prepare to celebrate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. But for many Catholics, Lent isn t a transformation experience. It s just a time when they give up chocolate or something else they enjoy, then go back to it at Easter. Lent is a powerful opportunity to live out your faith on a deeper level. One of the simplest and most effective ways to do that is through Best Lent Ever. It s a free daily program that will guide you on an incredible 40-day journey to become the-best-version-of-yourself making this the best Lent of your life. To sign up for this program, go to St. Gabriel the Archangel 5 Colorado Springs, CO

7 WEEKLY FAITH TOPIC ASHES PAUL TURNER You ve got dirt on your forehead. We re likely to hear those words from thoughtful friends who display their intimate concern as well as their religious absent-mindedness when we go out in public after Mass on Ash Wednesday. The distribution of ashes after the homily replaces the penitential act at the beginning of Mass. Instead of merely calling to mind our sins, we receive a very public reminder of our sinfulness. Repent and believe in the Gospel, we hear. Or, Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return. But it wasn t always that way. In the early church, only public sinners wore ashes. These sinners convened regularly to prepare for their reconciliation at a parish service and they formed well, what we now call support groups. As penitents, they used to wear ashes on their heads or in their clothes. Symbols of human mortality, ashes represented their complete dependence on the mercy of God. In the middle ages, the support groups dwindled but sinners remained strong in numbers. So Pope Urban II ordered up the first Ash Wednesday in Ashes were for everybody, and we ve been rubbing dirt on our foreheads ever since. Dirt is something we re constantly washing off children and ourselves. Only in church do we deliberately put dirt on the most public part of our bodies, our foreheads. Ashes are what s left in the now-cold fireplace. Ashes heat the barbecue. Ashes are all that remains of the home after the tragic fire. Ashes enrich the compost heap. Ashes of the faithful fill commemorative urns. Ashes represent destruction, refuse, and waste, but they hint at new life. Long before recycling became popular, the church got into the act on Ash Wednesday. Ever wonder what happens to those palm branches left over from last Holy Week? They ve been burned into ash, stuffed into bags and now await the chance to dirty your forehead on Ash Wednesday this year. The symbol of Christ s glory has become the symbol of our sin. On Ash Wednesday, you re not just another dirty face. No, you ve tossed yourself into the recycling bin of Lent, ready for renewal this Easter. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E.
