1 August 13, 2017 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings 1 KGS 19: 9A, 11-13A; PS 85: 9-14; ROM 9: 1-5; MT 14: In today s Gospel from the Book of Matthew, we hear the remarkable story of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. St. Peter reflects his faith in the Lord when he says, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. Jesus says simply, Come. We do not know if Peter stepped into the water or jumped and it does not matter. His faith and trust in the Lord allows Peter, too, to begin to walk on the water. Clearly when Peter s focus is on Christ, he is able to accomplish this. However, when Peter loses his focus and begins to observe and think about the storm raging around him, he begins to sink. To Peter s credit he knows exactly to Whom to turn in that situation. Lord, save me. We may often find ourselves in similar circumstances. Peter knew exactly Who to call out to at the moment of crisis. We may do the same. God truly loves us; we are His children. Listen to the Word of the Lord in Psalm 91: Because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. St. Francis de Sales wrote, Either God will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then; put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations. You can never love her more than Jesus did. --St. Maximilian Kolbe Why Do We Do That? - Catholic Traditions Explained Question: What are we celebrating on the feast of the Assumption of Mary? Answer: The Assumption, along with the Immaculate Conception, are two Marian dogmas that have been infallibly defined by the Church. The Assumption proclaims the reality that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven. This was God's special gift to her in response to her total giving of self to God's plan and will. The Church believes that Mary was immaculately conceived, that is, conceived without original sin. This led the Church to believe that she did not suffer one of the key consequences of original sin--death and corruption. (The Orthodox Church celebrates the Dormition of Mary, the belief that Mary did not die but rather fell asleep and was thus assumed into heaven.) What significance does this feast have for our lives as Christians today? Modeling ourselves on Jesus is certainly the sure path to God. Thus this feast is above all an assurance and hope of our continued life with God. God will not leave us orphaned or alone to suffer the emptiness of death. This is the hope and assurance that Mary's assumption celebrates. It is a celebration of OUR assumption as well. She is one of us, providing a model of what God has in store for all who love and give of themselves to God. MONTH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY The Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is a dogma of the Catholic faith that Mary is the Immaculate Conception; that is, in preparation for the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity in her womb, she was conceived without the corruption of sin through the infinite merits of her Son, Jesus Christ. Over the centuries, as saints and theologians reflected on how Mary pondered and treasured the sacred events from the life of Christ in her holy heart, as attested in Scripture, her pure heart was recognized as something to be imitated. Devotion to Our Lady s purity of heart began to flower, culminating in St. John Eudes promoting it in the 17th century alongside that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion rose to a new level after the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, when Mary revealed an image of her Immaculate Heart to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco. Respect Life God loves us, treats us with respect, and asks us to do the same with others. No one should ever be treated callously or carelessly everyone should be cherished and protected! Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Chairman USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities Adoration "In our self-centered culture and classic American emphasis on work, we often feel we have to accomplish something during our times of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. We rate our experience by how 'good' our prayer was, how heartfelt our devotion was, or how focused we could remain. Yet prayer and contemplation are fundamentally God's work, in which we are invited to participate. We need only to give Him the opening, and He will do the rest. By coming to adoration, we are handing Him the keys to our hearts, allowing the rays of His love and grace to bathe our souls in the light of His Presence, as the rays of the sun bathe our bodies in light. If we can take the time to pull away from the busyness and distractions of life and just sit at His feet, He will lead us." Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration Enrich your summer. Strengthen your relationship with Jesus. Adoration does not take the summer off. Adoration - Wednesdays. Exposition at 10am. Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary immediately following 12:15pm Mass. Rosary at 6:15pm followed by Evening Prayer and Benediction. Make time in your schedule to sit and listen to God and open your hearts to His Words. St. Gabriel the Archangel 5 Colorado Springs, CO

6 Diocesan Pastoral Plan Year II: The City on a Hill Focus: Young Adults (Ages 18-30) Overall Goal: For young adults to be transformed by the Mass as the source and summit of our faith, and allow this to flow into their discipleship. Areas for Reflection: 2) My Parish Home Theological Statement: The laity must take up the renewal of the temporal order* as their own special obligation. Led by the light of the Gospel and the mind of the Church and motivated by Christian charity, they must act directly and in a definite way in the temporal sphere. As citizens they must cooperate with other citizens with their own particular skill and on their own responsibility. Everywhere and in all things they must seek the justice of God s kingdom. The temporal order must be renewed in such a way that, without detriment to its own proper laws, it may be brought into conformity with the higher principles of the Christian life and adapted to the shifting circumstances of time, place, and peoples. Preeminent among the works of this type of apostolate is that of Christian social action which the sacred synod desires to see extended to the whole temporal sphere, including culture.- Apostolicam Actuositatem n. 7 i. 7 Weekly faith topic Baptismal Formula Paul Turner The minister who baptizes someone calls the person by name and says these words: N., I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. That sentence is called the baptismal formula. It is to be said while performing an action: either immersing the person in water three times or pouring water over the person three times once at each mention of a person of the Trinity. The formula can be traced to the conclusion of the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus commands the disciples to go out to all the world, baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (28:19). Although there is ome evidence in Acts of the Apostles for baptism in the ame of Jesus, the Catholic Church has long endorsed the Trinitarian formula. In recent years, some have proposed an alternative formula, baptizing in the name of the Creator, the Reedemer, and the Sanctifier, or eve the Creater, the Liberator, and the Sustainer. The Catholic Church does not recognize the validity of such baptisms because they veer too far from the traditional formula. The proposed formulas seem to promote gender-neutral names for the Trinity, but they express functions of the divine persons, not their names. Because the traditional formula for baptism appears in the Gospels, the Catholic Church strongly holds that it must be maintained. Those who were baptized with an alternative formula should present themselves to the church for baptism with the traditional formula. Ordinarily, baptism is performed by a priest or a deacon. In emergencies, anyone may baptize, even a nonbeliever, as long as he or she uses the formula, performs the action, and has the right intention. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc. 160 E.
