1 October 21, 2018 Twenty-Ninth day in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS IS 53:10-1; PS 33: 3-5, 18-19, 20, 22; HEB 4:14-16; MK 10:35-45 or MK 10: Our readings today are wonderfully consoling and wildly challenging. If we take them to heart, they just might change our lives. For they should call us to profound gratitude for all that God has done for us and inspire us to live lives of thanksgiving and obedience to Him in response to His overwhelming love and mercy. In the Gospel Reading, from Mark, Jesus tells us in His own words how we can thank Him and how our lives can reflect greatness in His eyes we can imitate Him. He tells us, Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Our God has ransomed our lives. In truth, this ransom means our lives are not our own but belong to God. We must do what He asks us to do with them. And He has told us clearly what to do serve others in love as we have been served in love by Him. This is why service for the Christian Steward is not an add-on to our already busy lives. It is our life. Over the course of the next week, take these readings to heart. Reflect on the remarkable love God has shown for you. Then look carefully at your daily life. Is it an imitation of the servant-love of your Brother and Savior? What changes do you need to make, perhaps just in attitude, or perhaps to the trajectory of your life as a whole, to live in grateful service to the One who loves you so? Cross Catholic Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in America and the priests and nuns working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Central and South America. ROSARY PRAYER October is the Month of the Rosary, and the Knights of Columbus are taking up Pope Francis request to offer this beloved prayer. Members of the Knights will lead the Rosary before the 8:30 AM Mass each week. Please come a few minutes early to help us build faithful families and communities, and offer your prayer to our Blessed Mother. Our regular Wednesday rosary will now begin at 6pm followed by Evening Prayer and Benediction at 6:30pm. The Knights of Columbus will lead the rosary on the 4th Wednesday of every month with our dedicated team leading it the other weeks. Please join us for prayer. GABRIEL S GIFTS THIS MONTH WILL BENEFIT CARE AND SHARE S SEND HUNGER PACKING According to U.S. Census Bureau figures, one-third of children under 18 in El Paso County live in poverty. Many of these children receive free lunch on school days, but go hungry on weekends. The Outreach Committee is partnering with Care and Share to feed these children and their families through the Send Hunger Packing program. Children enrolled in the program pick up a backpack on Friday containing enough non-perishable food to feed a family of four over the weekend. You can help by picking up a grocery list from the table in the narthex and returning your items next weekend. Thank you for your help! BAKERS NEEDED Calling all Bakers, we are in need of baked goods for our parish Nov. 10th craft fair. Proceeds support all youth mission trips and events. Once we make the decision to follow Jesus then every other claimant to supremacy must fall away. As I ve argued many times before, every one of us has something or some set of values that we consider greatest. Perhaps it is money, material things, power, or the esteem of others. Perhaps it is your family, your kids, your wife, your husband. None of this is false, and none of these things are bad. But when you place any of them in the absolute center of gravity, things go awry. When you make any of them your ultimate or final good, your spiritual life goes haywire. When you attach yourself to any of them with an absolute tenacity, you will fall apart. Only when we make Christ the cornerstone of our lives are we truly ready for mission. Keep in mind that every encounter with God in the Bible conduces to mission, to being sent to do the work of the Lord. If we try to do this work while we are stuck to any number of attachments, we will fail. Period. ~Bishop Robert Barron CALLING ALL ACTIVE DUTY, VETERANS AND RETIRED MILITARY The Outreach Committee is compiling a list of our parishioners and their immediate family members who are currently serving, or who have served in the armed forces, to be published in the bulletin for Military Appreciation Weekend, November Parishioners and immediate family members who would like to have their names included on this list, should send your name, the military member s name, their branch of service, and whether they are active duty, veterans or retired military to Donna Knutson at If you submitted names for the bulletin last year, you need not resubmit, they will automatically be included in this year s list of military from our parish. Please bring needed items to the church office and they will be delivered to the Marian House for you. CANDLES Did you know that candles are lit for prayer intentions? To "light a candle for someone" indicates one's intention to say a prayer for another person, and the candle symbolizes that prayer. Pray for a special intention and ask for blessings for that person. In the lighting of candles, we remember and truly live the words of Our Lord: "I am the Light of the World." In the lighting of candles, we not only pray, but our prayers become smaller symbols of the One Light of Christ. In burning candles, our prayers rise to Heaven day and night. Prayers for the saint's intercessions are also common because of their friendship with God in Heaven. Saints are powerful intercessors. So make it a practice to light a candle for your loved ones often. HUMANAE VITAE Fifty years ago, Pope Paul VI released Humanae Vitae, July 25, 1968, an encyclical on marital love, responsible parenthood, and artificial contraception. Until the end of 2018 we d like to offer you one significant quote each week of this very short encyclical that you can find on the Vatican website by Googling Humanae Vitae. uploads/2018/07/hv-latin.jpggod's Loving Design HV II, 8. Married love particularly reveals its true nature and nobility when we realize that it takes its origin from God, who "is love," (6) the Father "from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named." (7) Marriage, then, is far from being the effect of chance or the result of the blind evolution of natural forces. It is in reality the wise and provident institution of God the Creator, whose purpose was to effect in man His loving design. As a consequence, husband and wife, through that mutual gift of themselves, which is specific and exclusive to them alone, develop that union of two persons in which they perfect one another, cooperating with God in the generation and rearing of new lives. The marriage of those who have been baptized is, in addition, invested with the dignity of a sacramental sign of grace, for it represents the union of Christ and His Church. COUNCIL FOR BLACK CATHOLICS Nov 3, 2018, at 6 PM The Colorado Springs Council for Black Catholics will host the Annual St. Martin de Porres (free) dinner, this year at Holy Apostles Catholic Church. INTERCESSIONS FOR LIFE May we build a culture of life by embracing our mission as messengers of God s love; We pray to the Lord: Our Lady of the Snow Our Lady of the Snows is one of the oldest devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It commemorates a miraculous event that happened during the reign of Pope Liberius. A wealthy, childless Roman couple prayed to know how their fortune should be used for God. Our Lady answered them in a dream and asked that a church be built in her honor. She also appeared in a dream to the Holy Father with the same request. On August 5, 352 A.D., a hot summer day, snow fell on Esquiline Hill. All of Rome proclaimed it a miracle, and a basilica was built on the spot according to the outline of the pattern of snow. The church, the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major), is the largest church in the world, and one of the first, dedicated to Our Lady. August 5th celebrates its rebuilding and dedication in 434 A.D. St. Gabriel the Archangel 6 Colorado Springs, CO

7 SAINT CORNER ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II On October 22nd, we celebrate the pope who inspired the world! Born Karol Wojtyla in Krakow, Pope John Paul II became the first-ever Polish pope. He came of age in the early 20th century and lived through both the Nazi and communist occupations of Poland. His resistance activities were cultural, operating an underground theater company and entering a secret seminary. Karol was ordained a priest in 1946 and later a bishop. He was elected pope in As pope, the interests that captured his heart as a young man continued -- his pastoral concern for young people, his philosophical emphasis on the human person, and his devotion to Mary and to the mercy of God.
