1 October 28, 2018 Thirtieth day in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS JER 31:7-9; PS 126:1-6; HEB 5:1-6; MK 10:46-52 As Christian stewards we are called to devote a regular portion of our time to God in prayer. Perhaps we find it intimidating to find the right words when approaching our perfect and all-holy God. Today s Gospel shows us we need to have our act together before we can spend time with Him in prayer. In this passage from Mark, we see that Bartimaeus received a powerful answer to prayer at a very low point in his life. There, he sat, begging at the side of the road in a very undignified manner. His posture wasn t exactly reverent, and his prayer wasn t eloquent, just a desperate, Jesus, son of David, have pity on me. But it was a sincere cry from his heart. And Jesus, though surrounded by a sizable crowd, heard it, and called for Bartimaeus to come to Him. Folks from the crowd called to Bartimaeus, Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you. And right there on the spot, Bartimaeus experienced a profound moment of personal encounter with our Lord and the healing of his vision he desired. How simple it is to encounter Jesus! All we must do is reach out to Him in prayer and we can be assured that He will hear us and call us to Himself. So let s all take courage this week knowing that Jesus is calling us right now to spend time with Him just as we are, in all our weakness and brokenness. Tell Him, the great High Priest, what your needs are and then, like Bartimaeus, follow Him, and keep on keeping on in this stewardship way of life. It s a life with the ultimate happy ending. INTERCESSIONS FOR LIFE For the U.S. Catholic bishops: May the Lord grant them strength to be holy shepherds in protecting and leading their sheep; We pray to the Lord: HUMANAE VITAE Fifty years ago, Pope Paul VI released Humanae Vitae, July 25, 1968, an encyclical on marital love, responsible parenthood, and artificial contraception. Until the end of 2018 we d like to offer you one significant quote each week of this very short encyclical that you can find on the Vatican website by Googling Humanae Vitae. Married Love HV II, 9. - This love is above all fully human, a compound of sense and spirit. It is not, then, merely a question of natural instinct or emotional drive. It is also, and above all, an act of the free will, whose trust is such that it is meant not only to survive the joys and sorrows of daily life, but also to grow, so that husband and wife become in a way one heart and one soul, and together attain their human fulfillment. - It is a love which is total that very special form of personal friendship in which husband and wife generously share everything, allowing no unreasonable exceptions and not thinking solely of their own convenience. Whoever really loves his partner loves not only for what he receives, but loves that partner for the partner's own sake, content to be able to enrich the other with the gift of himself. - Married love is also faithful and exclusive of all other, and this until death. This is how husband and wife understood it on the day on which, fully aware of what they were doing, they freely vowed themselves to one another in marriage. Though this fidelity of husband and wife sometimes presents difficulties, no one has the right to assert that it is impossible; it is, on the contrary, always honorable and meritorious. The example of countless married couples proves not only that fidelity is in accord with the nature of marriage, but also that it is the source of profound and enduring happiness. - Finally, this love is fecund. It is not confined wholly to the loving interchange of husband and wife; it also contrives to go beyond this to bring new life into being. "Marriage and conjugal love are by their nature ordained toward the procreation and education of children. Children are really the supreme gift of marriage and contribute in the highest degree to their parents' welfare." (8) St. Gabriel the Archangel 5 Colorado Springs, CO

To "light a candle for someone" indicates one's intention to say a prayer for another person, and the candle symbolizes that prayer. Pray for a special intention and ask for blessings for that person. In the lighting of candles, we remember and truly live the words of Our Lord: "I am the Light of the World." In the lighting of candles, we not only pray, but our prayers become smaller symbols of the One Light of Christ. In burning candles, our prayers rise to Heaven day and night. Prayers for the saint's intercessions are also common because of their friendship with God in Heaven. Saints are powerful intercessors. So make it a practice to light a candle for your loved ones often. 7 ALL SAINTS PAUL TURNER In designating one day on our calendar for all the saints, the church chooses a time to honor our heroes the men and women whose example we admire. Coming near the end of the church year, the solemnity of All Saints invites us into the mystery of death and the promise of eternal life. An early tradition placed the festival on May 13. According to one story, Pope Boniface IV (himself a saint) began the celebration in Rome. On that date in 609 he dedicated a very old building as a new church. The Pantheon had been built to honor all the pagan gods, but Boniface rededicated the building as a Christian church in the seventh century. He brought the relics of the martyrs from the catacombs to this famous public place of worship. The parade of relics changed the Pantheon from a place for worship of all the pagan gods to a place that honored Mary and all the Christian saints and in turn the one Christian God. Eventually the idea of a feast of all saints was transferred to Nov. 1, near the end of the church year. The church honors many saints with a day of their own on the general liturgical calendar, but there are many more saints than those. Since Vatican II, the number of men and women canonized as saints has increased considerably. Although we do not celebrate all their names on specific dates in all our churches throughout the year, we do gather them as one on this day. Secular tradition has turned the eve of All Saints into a kind of anti-festival, a night when heroes of the underworld take command. The Mass for All Saints Day always replaces the one for ordinary time, even when it falls on a day. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E.
