1 July 22, 2018 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH PARISH OFFICE 8755 Scarborough Drive Colorado Springs, CO Hours: Monday-Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm Phone: (719) Fax: (719) PARISH CLERGY Pastor, Fr. Kirk Slattery Deacon Andy Dunnam Deacon Mike McGrady Deacon Dave Geislinger STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS JER 23: 1-6; PS 23: 1-6; EPH 2: 13-18; MK 6: Most are familiar with the scriptural quote from Psalm 23, The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall want. This passage serves as the Responsorial Psalm on this 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time because it supports the other readings with two key ideas: that we must place our trust in the Lord, and that we inherit life from our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. At the time St. Paul was writing his Letter to the Ephesians (our Second Reading), Paul was under house arrest in Rome and awaiting trial. He was allegedly accused by the Jews of taking a Gentile into a temple. Therefore, part of Paul s statement, For he (Christ) is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh, abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, is saying essentially the Lordship of Jesus is not greater then any difference you may feel you have with others that Jesus is our Savior and our Shepherd. In the Gospel Reading from Mark, the idea of shepherding lies at the heart. When he (Jesus) disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. In other words, He began to feed them with the Word of God. That is what we do during this part of our Mass; we hear Holy Scripture. These are the Words of the Lord. He is our shepherd. We are His sheep. As always, Jesus teaches us a valuable lesson about stewardship through today s readings. To the Lord, the needs of others were more important than His own. When we share our time, our talents, and our treasure, we are not only following our Good Shepherd, we are also living His Gospel call to shepherd others by giving of ourselves. For our programs to be a success we need to fill vacancies in the following positions: Catechist: The catechist is the primary teacher in our classrooms and will manage all aspects of the classroom to include timeliness and student behavior. Facilitator: The facilitator uses guided discussion techniques to engage the students/participants and help them discover the truths of the church. Mentor: A mentor is an experienced and trusted advisor. As a mentor it is important to be a good listener with an open mind and heart. Assistant/Aide: The assistant/aide helps set up the classroom with needed supplies, make copies as requested, help with projects, and cleans up the classroom. If you feel called to serve, please contact Deacon Mike or Cindy, CANDLES Did you know that candles are lit for prayer intentions? To "light a candle for someone" indicates one's intention to say a prayer for another person, and the candle symbolizes that prayer. Pray for a special intention and ask for blessings for that person. In the lighting of candles, we remember and truly live the words of Our Lord: "I am the Light of the World." In the lighting of candles, we not only pray, but our prayers become smaller symbols of the One Light of Christ. In burning candles, our prayers rise to Heaven day and night. Prayers for the saint's intercessions are also common because of their friendship with God in Heaven. Saints are powerful intercessors. So make it a practice to light a candle for your loved ones often. St. Gabriel the Archangel 5 Colorado Springs, CO

7 WEEKLY FAITH TOPIC DALMATIC PAUL TURNER Today the dalmatic is not the sort of garment you expect to see outside of a church service, but when it first appeared in third-century Rome from Dalmatia across the Adriatic Sea (the same place credited with a breed of dog made famous when 101 of them barked across movie screens), the garment made quite a fashion statement and senators adopted it as a sign of their rank. A calf-length tunic, wide at the sleeves, worn without a belt, it caused some scandal before bishops and deacons started wearing it as well. By the 11th century, the church designated the dalmatic as a vestment proper to them. Worn over the alb, the dalmatic looks a lot like a chasuble, the outer vestment worn by the priest when he celebrates the Eucharist. It adopts the same color and often the same material as the chasuble. Many early examples sported two stripes from front to back across the shoulders. But the big difference in these vestments is sleeves. A chasuble is completely open from hands to floor, but a dalmatic has sleeves. Many people don t notice the difference. For this reason, many deacons opt to wear the stole without the dalmatic because the deacon s stole, cutting across the body at an angle and dropping in a dogleg near the knee, is more visibly distinct. Although the dalmatic is generally identified with deacons, it remains a vestment that may be worn by bishops as well. When a bishop vests for a solemn service, he may wear the dalmatic under the chasuble, and in fact was required to do so for almost the past thousand years. Today he may omit the dalmatic for a good reason, and many bishops have dispensed with it as unnecessary. During the ordination ceremony, the deacon formally receives his dalmatic, and it is placed on him by an assisting deacon or priest. By this investiture, the garment becomes a symbol of his role within the community. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E.
