Kirk Slattery Deacon Andy Dunnam Deacon Mike McGrady Deacon Dave Geislinger STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION ON READINGS EX 20: 1-17; PS 19: 8-11; 1 COR 1: 22-25; JN 2: Our First Reading from the Old Testament Book of Exodus presents the Ten Commandments, as God gave them to Moses. The Commandments also appear in the Book of Deuteronomy (Chapter 5; verses 6-21). The Commandments are reaffirmed in the New Testament by Jesus Himself and especially in the Gospel of John. The Ten Commandments are also called the Decalogue, which means literally ten words. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#2056) God revealed these ten words to His people on the holy mountain. They were written with the finger of God. They are pre-eminently the words of God At another point the Catechism fortifies the Commandments by saying, from generation to generation the deposit of moral teaching has been handed on. Along with the Creed and the Our Father, the basis for catechesis has traditionally been the Decalogue, which sets out the principles of moral life valid for all people. (#2033) The Commandments are considered essential for spiritual good health and growth. They serve as the basis for Catholic social justice. A review of the Ten Commandments is a common type of examination of conscience before receiving the sacrament of Penance. As Lent draws to a close, it is important for each of us to go to confession and receive the sacrament of Penance. As part of that we may wish to look at our lives and how we live them through the holy words of the Ten Commandments. Learn more about the collection at DIOCESAN PASTORAL PLAN Year III: Gathered & Sent Focus: Parish 2) A Growing Family Theological Statement: The Church exists in order to evangelize, that is the carrying forth of the Good News to every sector of the human race so that by its strength it may enter into the hearts of men and renew the human race. The Missionary mandate of Jesus to evangelize has various aspects, all of which, however, are closely connected with each other: proclaim (Mk 16:15), make disciples and teach, be my witnesses, baptize, do this in memory of me (Lk 22:19), love one another (Jn 15:12). Proclamation, witness, teaching, sacraments, love of neighbor: all of these aspects are the means by which the one Gospel is transmitted and they constitute the essential elements of evangelization itself. One of the simplest and most effective ways to do that is through Best Lent Ever. It s a free daily program that will guide you on an incredible 40-day journey to become the-best-version-of-yourself making this the best Lent of your life. To sign up for this program, go to STATIONS OF THE CROSS Stations of the Cross are held each Friday of Lent, beginning at 6:00 pm. Afterwards, we share a meal: either a Knights of Columbus fish fry, or a simple soup supper. Volunteers are needed to bring a large crockpot of soup and bread for the March 9 soup supper. Please contact Kathy Thomas at kthomas@saintgabriel.net to volunteer. Soup can be brought to the church beginning at 5:00 pm that day. Mar 9 Stations of the Cross soup supper (volunteers needed) Mar 16 Stations of the Cross (bilingual) soup provided by 12:30 community Mar 23 Stations of the Cross K of C fish fry Mar 30 (Good Friday) Stations of the Cross no meal afterward A Lent to Remember explores the ways God reaches out to each of us with his mercy. Through Christ s suffering on the cross in the Paschal Mystery and his perpetual reception of his people in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God makes his love, his very self, present to us in the world. By reflecting on the Paschal Mystery and making a step-by-step examination of the Rite of Confession, A Lent to Remember communicates God s invitation to each one of us to come experience his indescribable love this Lent. Classes are March 8, 15, and 22 from 6:30-8:30pm in the Vianney/Nicholas Room. St. Gabriel the Archangel 5 Colorado Springs, CO

7 WEEKLY FAITH TOPIC PROCESSIONS IN HOLY WEEK PAUL TURNER You may feel you deserve applause when you get out of bed or off the couch and go to church. After all, many Catholics don t even do that much. You do. During Holy Week, however, going to church is not enough. Just when you think you can settle into your favorite pew, you will be asked to stand up, leave your place, and walk. Many Catholics resist. They become pew potatoes. But those who join the procession of Holy Week will find their faith and charity rewarded. On Palm day of the Passion of the Lord, for example, the Mass may begin outdoors. Instead of going directly into the church as usual, you may gather in another area indoors or out. The priest will bless the palm branches, he or the deacon will proclaim the Gospel, and then all process into the church acclaiming Christ. On Thursday of the Lord s Supper, the evening Mass does not conclude in the usual way. Instead, a procession forms right after communion. The Blessed Sacrament is brought to a special chapel or tabernacle. You may be invited to join this procession, singing hymns of praise and moving to a place where you may pray privately in the course of the night. During the Good Friday liturgy, you will be invited forward to adore the cross. At the Easter Vigil, as on Palm day, you may be invited to start Mass outside the church. There a fire may be burning, signifying the resurrection of Christ, the light that shatters darkness. Carrying candles, you enter the church, following a pillar of fire, as our ancestors marched from slavery to freedom. The processions of Holy Week draw us into the mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ. It is worthwhile to get up out of the pew. Copyright 2012 Resource Publications, Inc. 160 E.
