3 Q. A. I heard a deacon use the expression "virtue of religion" during a homily on spirituality and faith. Is religion considered a virtue? Broadly defined, virtue is directing our will and our power toward good. A virtue is a disposition that is habitual and they can be classified by type and purpose. The theological virtues, for instance, are faith, hope, and love. The virtue of religion is a phrase used in the Catechism of the Catholic Church in the discussion about the First Commandment, beginning in paragraph It explains how this virtue disposes us to give to God what we, as his creation, owe God as creator. God does not need anything from us, but in justice and love, we owe God something. God wants a relationship with us and willingly shares his life with all creation. Our inclination to seek God and give back something to God is the virtue of religion. The virtue of religion is expressed in adoration, prayer, and sacrifice. Adoration acknowledges God as creator and source of life. Prayer allows us to address God, offering praise, petition, and thanksgiving. Sacrifice allows us to offer something to God, a way in which we share something of ourselves in the same way that God shares life with us. These are the hallmarks of a spiritual life that will grow and develop as any good relationship does. 4 As a safety measure, the front steps of St. Thomas Aquinas have been blocked off. The steps are crumbling and too dangerous for people to walk on. The steps were the last project of our capital campaign to be completed and now that the construction is completed by UConn, we can begin to repair the front steps. Thank you for your patience while this work is being completed. Diocese of Norwich Catholic Family Services Annulment Workshop If you are a divorced Catholic who would like to know more about annulments or is considering beginning the annulment process, consider attending this informational workshop Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, from 7-9 P.M. at St. Bernard Church Hall, 25 St. Bernard s Terrace, Rockville, CT. A panel of experts from the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal will be there to answer questions and explain the numerous aspects of the annulment process. Weddings in Haiti The first of many weddings to be celebrated in Les Palmes wearing the wedding attire sent by the St. Mary Haiti Committee. Thank you to everyone who donated wedding dresses,prom dresses, veils shoes and jewelry. They will bring joy and blessings to the newly married couples in Haiti! Annual Appeal Every parish family should have received a letter from Father John this past week requesting a gift/pledge to our Annual appeal. This year, the funds donated will be applied to the repair & refinishing of the altar. The carpet is overdue for removal and the sub floor needs to be evaluated and repaired where needed. Some electrical work is warranted as well. When the repairs are completed the altar will match the baptismal area and will certainly be a bright addition to the church. The participation of all parishioners is essential for the success of this project, thank you so much for your generosity and support of St. Mary Church. 5 23rd annual Mass for those dedicated to Education The 23rd annual Diocesan Mass for those dedicated to Education will be celebrated on Sunday, September 9, 2018, in the cathedral of St. Patrick; at 8:45 a.m. Bishop Cote will celebrate this mass for all teachers and support staff, public, parochial, and private, active and retired of all faiths. All are welcome. For more information or if you wish to help, please call Father Langevin or Rebecca McDougal at Weekday Mass Schedule Change: Starting Monday August 27th, Masses will be held again at St. Thomas at 12:20p.m. Monday through Friday and at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary on Tuesdays and Fridays Only. These are the only day Masses held for both churchs Monday through Friday. Masses on Saturday and Sunday at St. Thomas and St. Mary will remain the same. Christmas Fair 2018 Here are some more suggestions for the Christmas booth. Handmade Christmas tree skirts, (in assorted sizes), stockings, table runners, ornaments, swags, wreaths, and garland. If anyone has any table size Christmas trees they are no longer using, please donate them. Please keep all donations coming for the fair and leave items in St. Mary church hall near storage closet marked Christmas fair storage or people who go to St. Thomas can leave items with Kathy Dochter. We can hardly blame the crowd for their shock at this statement eating the Flesh and drinking the Blood of our Lord shouldcause us a bit of a shock. Yet how easy it is to show up at Mass Sunday after Sunday, receiving the Eucharist as simply part of a weekly routine. If we really spent time contemplating the gift our Lord is offering us in this sacrament, we would be awestruck at the love and power in this gift. Through it, our Lord is giving us the very best He has to give Himself. Not even the greatest theological scholar or the holiest of saints can fully understand this mystery. The Eucharist is the foundation for a stewardship way of life. Through His gift of the Eucharist, God fills us with His love and strength. This love and strength empower us to live as generous stewards to be faithful to the ministries we serve in, joyful in material giving, and offer our very best to our families and secular work. The Eucharist is the ultimate inspiration for a stewardship way of life. When we contemplate this gift of God, we will want to make a joyful return to Him. Mass will become anything but routine and we will live each day as His passionate disciples.
