2 Page 2 LSU Catholic Dear CTK Family, Here we go! School starts this week at LSU. The buzz and movement of students has already begun with 4,500 freshmen moving in last Sunday, sorority rush, and other students arriving back in Bengal Tiger country for the start of a new Fall semester. August 9-11 we had 75 of our Christ the King student leaders come on Leadership Retreat to prepare for this coming year. It was an amazing time of prayer, fun, community, and learning together. We are blessed to have so many incredible students as part of our leadership team. Please keep them in your prayers. This week is full of activity: Welcome Back Jambalaya, Alive, Encounter, Arise Freshmen Retreat, and the Block Party. The Block Party is something that is meant for our entire community to come and celebrate together: students, parishioners, family, friends. There will be live music, BBQ chicken, and tons of fun. We d love to see you there. On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we announced some difficult news. Fr. Reuben, our associate pastor, has been asked by the diocese to begin a new assignment on September 1 st. In the last couple of months we have had three priests in the diocese (2 pastors and 1 associate) who have had to step down from active ministry because their physical health would not allow them to continue. Msgr. Robert Bergreen has had to retire due to serious back issues and is now in the hospital for blood clots in his lungs, Fr. Howard Adkins s Parkinson s disease has progressed to a point where he has had to retire, and Fr. Juel Kandulna was in the hospital for over a month, but seems to be recovering well at the moment. Please keep them all in your prayers. Due to a decrease in available priests for ministry in our diocese Christ the King will not be assigned an associate pastor to replace Fr. Reuben. This will be the first time in a very, very long time that there has been only one priest assigned at Christ the King. It will mean that we will need to make some adjustments in our ministry, particularly in regard to the Mass and Confession schedule. Next Sunday, August 26 th, will be the last 10pm Mass. After that our Sunday Mass schedule will be our normal Summer/Break Schedule on a permanent basis: 10am, Noon (Spanish), 6pm, and 8pm. We will continue to have Confessions at 2:30pm on Saturday. Our weekday Mass and Confession schedule will be as follows: Monday and Tuesday Confessions 4:30pm and Mass 6pm, and Wednesday and Thursday Confessions 10:30am and Mass 11:45am. There will be no Confessions or Mass on Fridays. It hurts my heart to have to cut the Mass and Confession schedule, especially when more and more people have been participating in the Sacraments. I am extremely grateful to Fr. Reuben for his pastoral service over the past 14 months at Christ the King. It has truly been a gift to have him as part of our team. In God s Providence I trust that He has called him to minister elsewhere, but it is tough to lose a good priest from Christ the King. We will have a going away reception for Fr. Reuben after the 10am Mass this following Sunday, August 26 th. Please make sure to come to the Mass and let Fr. Reuben know how much you appreciate his priestly ministry. Fr Reuben s new assignment will be announced on Sunday, August 26 th. In the midst of all difficulties the Lord promises He will never leave or forsake us. Let us renew our trust in His steadfast mercy. Mindful of this difficult adjust for us all, I am excited about what the Lord has in store for us this year. Thank you for your yes to Him. 3 LSU Catholic Page 3 In this Sunday's Gospel, the conflict escalates in the Bread of Life Discourse. Confusion is mounting in the crowd. "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Their minds were thinking literally, not mystically. Jesus doesn't seem to help, however, and only drives his point home with more emphasis. "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you." Jesus would later institute the Eucharist at the Last Supper. There he would definitively establish the sacramental reality in which bread and wine become substantially his own Body and Blood. We celebrate this sacrament in the Mass. Perhaps we do not always understand what we receive. "My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." What is the essence of food and drink? Food nourishes our bodies, providing essential calories for our survival. Water is used throughout the body to cushion joints, regulate body temperature, and protect sensitive tissues like the brain. When we receive the Eucharist, we receive the spiritual equivalent of these essential elements. Like water, the Eucharist strengthens the sanctifying grace moving through us. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." The Eucharist connects us intimately to Jesus and confirms our union with him. That is why we abstain from the Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin. It would be a contradiction and deep disrespect to these words of Jesus. To receive the Body and Blood of Jesus is not a right but a gift we receive with deep humility. As we receive the Bread of Life, grace strengthens our love, separates us from sin -- even wiping away venial sins -- unifies us with the universal Church, and helps commit us to humble service. Confirmation candidates will begin meeting next month, when the Semester begins at LSU. Registration is now open! While some of our preparation/formation will be in conjunction with other formation opportunities that are open to the entire Christ the King community, the primary formation will be taught by Sarah Denny and Drew Knight, Student Leader. The majority of the mandatory gatherings will take place on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. The first session will be on Thursday, August 30 at 6 p.m. and will begin in the Borders Room. There is no cost for this preparation. All candidates will be expected to attend each presentation. Your sponsors are not required to come to our classes. If they are in town and would like to attend, they are more than welcome. Please crutherford@ctklsu.org to register. Are you or someone you know interested in becoming Catholic? The formation of adults and the process for initiation into the Catholic Church is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or simply the RCIA. This program provides the groundwork for basic faith development. Together with others, you will gather for classes, prayer, Mass, and discussion with members of the Church who have been specially trained for this ministry. Come & See during the RCIA Open House on Sunday, September 9 from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. in the Borders classroom. It will be a night of welcome, prayer and next step. Refreshments will be provided. 5 Let s face it. Catholicism is Weird by Patrick Coffin This is true for ignorant outsiders and for dissenting insiders. Like the Hebrews of old, Catholics are a peculiar people, a people set apart (Deuteronomy 14:2; Psalm 4:3; 1 Peter 2:9). The ethno-hyphenated Catholics ( My sainted grandma was born in Galway and my son is at Notre Dame so of course we re Catholic ) are not so weird. They fit in too well. I m talking about the all-in serious Catholics who do things like accept all the teachings of the Church, including the hard sayings. In a world of Kardashian-worshippers, anyone who thinks sex is reserved for marriage, or that marriage cannot be redefined without grave consequences to society and culture, or that contraception undercuts not only the procreative dimension of marital union but also the unitive dimension, or, for that matter, that a man who grew up in Nazareth is the God of the universe and that He founded a Church (after suffering torture and death and rising from the dead) and gave her sacraments and the gift of infallibility is by definition, weird... See, once you accept the weird label, things get easier and become clearer. You stop trying to please everybody. You start breathing easier when you get push-back at fashionable parties. And you can fashion a way to describe why the weirdness of Catholicism is uniquely fitted to the weirdness of life itself, and why all of it (kata holikos means of the whole, or universal ) fits with what God has previously revealed in nature and with what the human heart really desires. The human heart craves fullness, the nth degree of peace and joy, the highest imaginable summit of truth. It was built for riches and glories unimaginable. This major theme of the Bible man s insufficiency and God s super-abundant sufficiency is verified by St. Augustine from his Confessions, You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. What would be much stranger is if the teachings of the Church God founded were less weird than the world He made. (Full Article is available at)
