For the People of St. Francis of Assisi 12:30 P.M. Paola Maria Falco Mario Gaspari & Nettie Salerno Rosa Benedetto My Dear Parishioners, Many people, when facing a major problem or difficulty in their lives, will seek assistance of someone who has knowledge in that area. People who seek help from others when facing difficult situations show both wisdom and humility, as none of us, alone, has all the answers to life. Along with problems and difficulties we will face, there are also basic questions we must answer about life. What is the meaning and purpose of life? How can I know and choose right from wrong? How we choose to answer these questions affects how the course of our lives will unfold. God offers assistance to us along life s journey. They could be family members, a close friend, pastoral ministers, priests, deacons, and many others. I believe that we can say that all of us here believe in God, believe in Jesus, and believe that there is right and wrong. Although we hold these beliefs in common, it is another thing altogether to make the choice to live them anew each day. To be sure we are staying on the right road and walking in the ways of the Lord, it is important to have sources of expertise we can draw on for guidance and direction. The insights offered to us by today s readings provide such expertise. Our first reading, from Sirach, reminds us that God s Commandments are not a burden we are simply to abide by and bear. Rather, they are a blessing and a gift. They guide us in the way of right living; of what it means to walk in the ways of the Lord. The teachings of Jesus and those of the Church should also be seen in the same light. They, too, are meant to give us further guidance and instruction in how we are to live, so we can keep our feet on the path of life. The teachings of Jesus found in today s Gospel are a wonderful example of this. Specifically, they remind us that there is more to living rightly than having the right intentions. We need to pay attention to the desires of our hearts, for they play an important role in determining how we choose to live. Especially, we need to remain vigilant against those desires that could lead us in to grave sin or give scandal to others. Even though life presents us with its share of trials and tribulations, we need not fear because God, in his goodness, provides us with many people we can turn to for their expertise and support, helping us stay on the path of life. God also provides us with the wisdom of Sacred Scripture, his Commandments, the teachings of Jesus, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make sure we do not veer off that path. God Bless, Msgr. Maresca
