He did not do these things of himself, but because they were of the Father. Today s society tells us that when children reach a certain age they no longer have to do what their parents tell them. They, in effect, can do what they want. However, part of the job of parents is to teach their children about responsibilities they have, and how to deal with those responsibilities once they move on from the parents sheltering arms. In a similar way, one aspect of the ministry of Jesus was to show the disciples what their responsibilities would be once he had ascended to the Father. They would be expected to carry on the mission of building up the Kingdom of God. The first reading, which tells of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven, also shows that the early disciples did learn this lesson. They learned that they had to take responsibility to maintain the connection with the Father as Jesus had taught them. When the disciples returned to Jerusalem they prayed, the necessary first step in carrying out their mission. What prayer can do is broaden our horizons, broaden our vision and broaden our understanding of who we are and who the God who loves us is. Prayer prepares us to go out into the world and to do whatever is necessary to help build up the Kingdom of God. This may even include accepting suffering in the name of Christ. We will rejoice in these sufferings not in a fatalistic way, but we will rejoice because our pain will be constructive. Our pain and our rejection by the world can allow us to show what true love is. Even in the midst of rejection, we can be peaceful, knowing that we are Christians and following in the footsteps of Christ. We can look to heaven and say, Father, the hour has come. This hour is the hour when we are willing to accept the tasks which we have been given, to set aside the so called self, and to examine what God is asking of us. While we may reach a time when we feel we can be independent of the authority of our parents, we can never be truly independent of God. We never can reach an age when we do not need God. We can use the Apostles as models and set aside time for prayer. Then we can meet the world, accept the suffering it gives, and rest peacefully in the knowledge that we are glorifying the Father. Our task is to make known the name of Jesus throughout the world, to make known the truths he came to reveal to us. God Bless, Msgr. Maresca
