2 SONS AND DAUGHTER OF SAINT NICHOLAS Your help is needed twice this month in preparation for the Nativity of our Lord: Friday, December 17 at 10:00 am to arrange the flowers, wreaths and garland for the church for Christmas. Wednesday, December 22, following the Bible Study class, help will be needed to iron the gold altar cloths and change all of the altar cloths from red to gold for the Nativity of our Lord. Men your help is especially needed to remove items from the altar and table of preparation to help make the change-over. Please call the parish office if you are unable to attend this meeting PARISH MEETING FOR ELECTIONS NOVEMBER 7, 2010 At the special parish meeting on October 24 amendments to the parish bylaws were approved to allow for the election of parish council, auditors and nominating committee in November and then an annual parish meeting in January. Therefore, the parish meeting for elections was held on Sunday, November 7, 2010 following the Divine Liturgy. The following were elected to the Parish Council; Linda Branoff, Dennis Goodman, Marla Houser, Cathy Steiner and Julio Vázquez. Auditors; Rosemary Vuckovich and Reggie Jehnsen After the approval from the Diocese, the newly-elected Parish Council members, along with the other Parish Council members and Auditors will be sworn into office. ANNUAL MEETING The Annual Meeting of Saint Nicholas Parish will be held on Sunday, January 16, 2011 beginning with a short prayer service after the Divine Liturgy. The Meeting will then reconvene in the Parish Hall. All parish organizations should prepare a report to be given at this meeting PLEDGES As we draw to the close of 2010 please check to see if you are current with your pledge of stewardship for the year. Anytime during the year you can make your pledges using VISA or Master Card by stopping in the church office. Our stewardship is our pledge to God as a thank-offering to Him for the blessings He has bestowed upon us. St. Catherine s League has purchased an Icon egg from Russian of the Nativity of our Lord, in memory of the deceased members of St. Catherine s League.

We will decorate cookies for the Cookie Walk on Saturday. You may bring your own decorating supplies from home if you wish. Decorating supplies will be provided. PARISH PRIDE PROJECT UPDATE Thank you to everyone for their generous donations to the Parish Pride fund. With your donations we have been able to do the following projects; Painting of the Church, Handicap Restroom, Beautification of the grounds, New road sign in front of the church and Seal Coating of the parking lot. We still hope to be able to do the following: furnace( (s), etc. We are still in need of $30, to reach our goal of $100,000 for Parish Pride. MEMORY ETERNAL +Mildred Reynolds fell asleep in the Lord on October, 22. Services were held in church on Wednesday, October 27. The parish family would like to extend its deepest sympathy to Mildred s sisters Daisy Karkoski and Josephine Baker and to her nephew Reggie Jehnsen. May God grant His handmaiden Mildred blessed repose and memory eternal. +George Sfetkides, fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, November 14. Funeral services were held in Church on Wednesday, November 17 with interment at Evergreen Cemetery. The parish family extends its deepest sympathy to George s children Nick Sfetkides, Fanny Popoff, Tammy Sapardanis and Mary Sfetkides. 5 FROM FATHER S DESK Dear faithful and friends of St. Nicholas Church, Last month, November 12-13, 2010 our Diocese gathered in Congress-Sobor for the fourth time in fortyseven years. Friday evening began with the celebration of Great Vespers for the feast of St. John Chrysostom served by Fr. Paul Gassios, the dean of St. George Cathedral. It was a spiritually uplifting service and wonderful to have so many clergy and laity from our Diocese present to honor the great pastor, John Chrysostom. Following Vespers, all those in attendance were also able to participate in the retreat led by Hieromonk Calinic (Berger) of the OCA s Romanian Episcopate. Fr. Calinic presented on the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Pentecost. His presentation was very insightful regarding currents in popular thought and scholarship about our Lord and how Pentecost ties together the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ with the preaching of the Apostles. Saturday began with the Divine Liturgy served by His Grace, Bishop Melchisedek and Protodeacon Michael Myers of St. Nicholas Church, Fort Wayne, IN. The choir sang the responses with spirit and devotion. It was a blessing to be at this Liturgy and to receive Holy Communion with the clergy brotherhood of our Diocese. His Grace preached of how concerned St. John Chrysostom was for his flock, that he was a true shepherd after the Good Shepherd. He then reflected that our Diocese now begins the process of seeking a shepherd, one who will be a good shepherd, looking after his sheep, who will know his own and his own will know him; one who will not run at the sight of a wolf but will lay down his life for his sheep. Then we all went to the cathedral hall for a scrumptious brunch and to share in fellowship on such a day graced with glorious spring-like weather. Then the business session of the Congress-Sobor began with an invocation by Bishop Melchisedek. Fr. Don Freude then opened the Sobor and Damian Gosheff, attorney and member of St. Nicholas Church, Fort Wayne, IN and member of the Diocesan Constitutional Committee, was nominated as interim chair of the meeting. It had been hoped that we would nominate a candidate for Diocesan Bishop at this Sobor but logistical issues prevented that from occurring. The Diocese was able, however, to approve the amended Diocesan Constitution. The amended Constitution corrected archaic provisions and language and fixed the canonical issue over the national origins of a candidate for Diocesan Bishop. It is hoped that in the near future the names and biographies/curricula vitae of the candidates for Bishop will be presented to the entire Diocese. The Episcopal Search Committee also envisions the opportunity for the candidates to be interviewed individually and those interviews recorded to be sent to the parishes. Please keep the good work of the Fifth Diocesan Congress-Sobor in your prayers and petition the Holy Spirit to guide the works of our Diocesan Church. And pray that the Lord our God, in His mercy and providential care for us, will call forth for His flock a true shepherd of wisdom and strength, blessing us with a Bishop to care for the well-being of our Diocese, and to unite His faithful people in a zealous confession of the Orthodox faith, in loving service to one another, and a bright witness to the glory of His Holy Name. Poinsettias will be available only in the large arrangement (2 plants per pot). The offering for the large plant will be $20.00.We will also have wreaths available: 36 inch wreath, 24 inch wreath and 16 inch wreath. New this year: two extra small wreaths (12 inch) which are available for an offering of $ The offerings for the garland (two at 50 feet each) will be priced at $45.00 per 50 foot rope.
