2 HOW CAN I KEEP GREAT LENT? Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three basic Christian and Lenten necessities. But, knowing that we will not make a maximum effort, some of us may feel frustrated, lost, and without guidance when facing the Lenten season. Other may simply ignore it. DO WHAT YOU CAN Great Lent, however, should never be ignored. The only realistic Lenten guideline is this: do the best you can. The essentials of Great Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Intensify your prayer. Fast as fully as possible. Give to others, asking nothing in return. Know as well that all of your fasting, praying, and almsgiving must be exercised in secret. The only real goal and purpose of Great Lent is to enter into a deeper love for God and for those around us. CERTAIN WEEKS another concrete yet traditional step towards a fuller Lenten participation is to keep certain Lenten weeks in a more careful and strict way than others. For example, the first and third weeks of Great Lent, in addition to Holy Week, can be set aside for a greater and more concentrated Lenten effort. Very practically speaking, everyone can keep certain weeks, or at least one week, in a very special way. If this is done, there is no doubt that the result will be very positive and the time spent may prove to be the most inspiring and fruitful time of our entire life. We can only try it and see! WHAT TO DO here are some concrete guidelines for taking Great Lent more seriously: + Turn off the TV, radio, and stereo for the entire Lenten season, except for news and serious or educational programs. Limit time on the internet. + Keep useless talking to a minimum. Do only necessary business, good works, and acts of charity. + In the name of Jesus Christ, forgive all who have offended you and seek forgiveness from those whom you have offended. If it will not be embarrassing or misinterpreted as an act of self-righteousness, express yourself as concretely as possible. Visit; make a phone call, etc. + Set aside and give a sizable portion of your resources for others: the parish, the poor, and a social or educational agency. Tell no one what you have done. Do not advertise what you are doing. + Fast. Eat no meat, as the basic minimum. Suit your fast to your work, but avoid luxury. Tell no one. Do not advertise or discuss your fasting and avoid judging the fasting of others. + Pray at home at least at 1 fixed time each day; use even a brief rule of prayer & keep it faithfully. + Read the scriptures in the same way: follow the church s calendar or read a chapter a day. + Be faithful to Christ s Gospel in every word, action, and thought - even the smallest. + Participate in all the weekly Lenten services especially the Presanctified Liturgy, Vespers, and the Divine Liturgy, confessing seriously and receiving Holy Communion often. PEACE AND JOY If we do these things, not in a spirit of gloomy self-denial or irritated self-pity, we will gain an awareness of genuine peace and joy in communion with God and those around us. This is guaranteed - and our participation in the celebration of the feast of Our Lord s Resurrection will be filled with the abiding joy that comes from God.

3 FROM FATHER S DESK Beloved faithful in our Lord Jesus Christ, We have witnessed in the news the suffering of the people in Haiti following the terrible earthquake in January. The sight of people in such abject poverty and in the depths of suffering may lead us to ask, Why, O Lord? Father John Breck wrote an excellent article addressing this very question that I would like to share with all of you. Let us continue to remember the poor and the needy during this Lent and throughout the year because in them we see our Lord Jesus Christ. With love in Christ, Father Matthew Pastor Why, O Lord, Why? Written by the Very Rev. John Breck Another catastrophe, with the unimaginable suffering of countless people buried alive, living their last days in desperation and agony. Now, a week after the 7.0 earthquake devastated Port-au-Prince, multitudes of victims remain under the ruins, still dying, their bodies broken and their limbs shattered. We can t imagine what their personal hell is like, how they are still wasting away from lack of water as well as from physical trauma. Nearly seventy souls, still breathing, have been pulled out of their potential grave during the past few days, and each success understandably elicits from the rescuers cries of joy and thanksgiving. On the other hand, some sixty thousand have already been buried in mass graves, and the death toll is expected to pass two hundred thousand. With more than a million people homeless, living in makeshift tents or on the streets, and with aftershocks continuing intermittently, Haiti is in ruins. Some people believe they know why this tragedy has struck as it has. One of America s most popular televangelists has declared publicly that it s because many Haitians still practice voodoo or other forms of pagan religion. The earthquake, to his mind, is thus God s punishment, meted out against unbelievers. This presumably includes divine wrath vented against the multitudes of infants crushed under the debris, and the staggering number of newly orphaned little children. Yet many Haitians have drawn similar conclusions. An article in the NY Times (Jan 14, 10), titled Haiti s Angry God, quoted a local woman as saying that God is angry at all sinners, and especially at Haitians. The earthquake, to her mind, represents divine retribution. Nevertheless, she could affirm that the event actually strengthened her faith. And similar responses were uttered by many who, during the nights of total blackout and with the air filled with the stench of death, comforted themselves and each other by singing hymns. Why, O Lord, why? Is it really divine retribution for the sins of these poor people? Then why not me? Why not us? For many of us, this kind of disaster raises once more the problem of theodicy : if God is both allpowerful and wholly good, how can he allow evil to exist? Put another way, how can we explain the everpresent phenomenon of innocent suffering? If God is both omnipotent and benevolent, then the only logical answer to the question is that such tragedy does indeed represent divine retribution, punishment for sin and rebellion against God s will (thus there is no such thing as truly innocent suffering). In light of Scripture and our personal experience, however, this kind of logical deduction is simply untenable. God certainly judges us in light of our sinfulness, as well as of our righteousness and works of love. That judgment, however, does not result in God inflicting physical and emotional suffering on entire nations or peoples: not in Haiti, not in Indonesia, nor anywhere else in the world. Until we face the Last Judgment, divine punishment comes merely in the form of God letting us reap the consequences of our sin, letting us stew in our own juice. There is unquestionably a divine pedagogy to be found in many instances of suffering. We must not believe, however, that the God whose very essence is love, who surrendered his own life to suffering and

4 death in order to rescue us from the consequences of sin and death, is a vindictive God whose righteousness trumps his mercy and compassion. Most people, including many Orthodox Christians, have had their vision of God shaped by a Western theology that begins with philosophical abstractions. Their notion of God begins with the image of One who is omniscient and omnipotent, a God of Justice who demands justice from us under threat of punishment if we do not conform to his will, his law. From an Orthodox perspective, however, we need to begin not with the image of God on high, but with the more powerful and more poignant image of the Cross. That image does not explain in rational terms the mystery of innocent suffering; nothing in this life does or can (that is why it is suffering and not merely pain). But it does tell us what is essential: that if I make my bed in Sheol, Thou art there! (Ps. 38/39). All we can finally say about tragedies such as the one in Haiti, or the tsunami of a couple of years ago, or the death of a little child on the highway, is that Christ is present with us, to share totally our loss, our grief and our pain. As the Paschal icon so dramatically and beautifully depicts it, Christ descends again and again into the depths of our hell, to reach out his hand to grasp ours, and to lift us from the darkness into his radiant light. For all of those trapped under the ruins, Christ is there, sharing their agony to the bitter end. He is with those who grieve the loss of loved ones, bearing their sorrow and anguish as well. As the service of Great Compline declares, he is God with us! Not in the first place as a God of righteousness and judgment, but as the God of boundless love, who remains, in Pascal s words, in agony until the end of the world. If we begin with the Cross, rather than with some abstract notion of divine omnipotence, then we can see that God and we ourselves are still engaged in a massive cosmic struggle. The Cross and Resurrection ended Satan s sovereignty over the world and over our individual destinies. Yet the struggle continues, just as sin continues, as natural disasters continue, and will do so until Christ comes again in glory. Once more we need to remind ourselves: there is profound significance in the fact that at the Empty Tomb the angel speaks of Christ not as the Risen One, but as the Crucified One (Matt & Mk). The risen and glorified Christ remains the Crucified One in the life and experience of everyone who seeks him, perhaps first of all those who cry out to him from under the rubble. If God is the vindictive overlord who punishes sinners with such tragedies (why particularly in Haiti?), then frankly, I m not interested. If, on the other hand, he is the Suffering Servant, who journeys with us and for us, to bear our sin and its consequence of mortality as well as our pain and anguish, then he is indeed what Scripture declares him to be: the self-emptying God of love, who gives himself, wholly and unreservedly, for the life of his world. The Parish Council will NOT meet in March. MEMORIAL (SOUL) SATURDAYS The next Memorial (Soul) Saturdays (Zadusnica) are Saturday, March 6 and Saturday, March 13. 9 CONSERVATION OFFICER Mike Borkovich poses with Sean Lammy after the boy shot an 11-point buck in FLOORED BY NATIONAL HONOR Leelanau News Wednesday, February 17, 2010 by Alan Campbell State conservation officer Mike Borkovich has been named to an elite group identified as the best in the nation at protecting natural resources. Borkovich has been selected as recipient of the Guy Bradley Award, which is given annually by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. He will receive a plaque at the National Wildlife and Natural Resources Conference held March 25 at the Milwaukee (Wis.) Hilton hotel from the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, among other wildlife officials. The Leelanau County resident, whose past awards include Conservation Officer of the Year for Michigan through a program administered by Safari Club International, said he is humbled to receive national recognition. I m floored by this. I knew what the award was, but I didn t know I was even nominated, he said. The award is given in the spirit of Guy Bradley, the first wildlife law enforcement agent in America killed while performing his duties. Bradley was shot in 1905 while pursuing poachers of wading birds in the Everglades that were being relentlessly slaughtered by hunters. The birds were popular for their colorful plumes, which were used to decorate fashionable hats of the day. Borkovich was given high praise by Larry Johnson, chief park ranger at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Johnson nominated Borkovich, who has become well known locally as an advocate for fishing and hunting sports since being stationed in Leelanau County 12 years ago. A master communicator and natural goodwill ambassador for the DNR, Mike has made a positive difference in the area. In 2002, he helped initiate quality deer management after noticing a decline in the quality of the whitetail deer taken during hunting seasons, Johnson wrote. Johnson also spoke of Borkovich s work ethic, which is often praised by fellow officers. Known by his colleagues as 36/24 for squeezing 36 hours of results out of each 24-hour day, Mike works with an intensity and dedication that inspires those he meet, including the inevitable poachers... he simply leads, and I think that is what sets Mike apart from other excellent Conservation Officers, Johnson wrote. It s believed Borkovich is the first officer from Michigan to receive the Guy Bradley award. Separate awards are given out each year to a recipient representing state government, and a representative of the federal government. The last three winners of the state award are a CO with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, a forensic scientist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and a CO with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. By coincidence, Borkovich knows Steven Middleton, an officer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service stationed in Charlotte, Tenn. Middleton, winner of the federal award, teamed with Borkovich to nab a whitetail poaching ring while Borkovich was stationed near Bay City. The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is a non-profit corporation authorized by Congress in 1984 to work with the private sector for the preservation and promotion of natural resources. Krystyna Wilniakowski, who administers the Guy Bradley Award for the foundation, said Borkovich serves as an example of the type of person the award was meant to honor. He seems to reflect the tireless dedication that Guy Bradley was known for, said Wilniakowski. The award comes with a $1,000 check, which Borkovich plans to donate to the Northwest Michigan Chapter of the Quality Deer Management Association. Wow, said Borkovich. What an honor that I can represent all the officers in this state. We have so many great conservation officers, and any one of them would have been deserving.
