St. Jude: 20 JULY 1-31, 2011 ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH, FORT WAYNE, IN SITE OF OUR 48 TH DIOCESAN CONFERENCE & 5 TH DIOCESAN CONGRESS-SOBOR JULY 8-10, 2011
2 FROM FATHER S DESK This is the month of our Diocesan Congress-Sobor. In a few short days one of the two candidates, Fr. Paul Gassios or Fr. Alexander Golitzin, will be nominated by the Diocese to be our Episcopal Nominee. Both candidates have visited our parish and have met with many of the faithful and taken their questions. Last month I addressed questions that had been asked regarding the episcopal search process, the purpose of the visits by the candidates, how delegates will vote, etc. This month the focus is on what a bishop is and our reaction to what the results of the nomination will be. Many of you had the opportunity to visit with and speak to the two candidates. Each person will have their own assessment on whom they would like to see nominated as our episcopal nominee. The reasons for these individual choices will vary: for some it may be the personality of a candidate that causes them to favor him. For others it may be the administrative style of a candidate as revealed in the interviews. For yet others it may be what a candidate s vision means for the future of the diocese as a diocese. As a priest of the diocese who will have to work with a future bishop my own focus will be not on personality but on which candidate will be a better fit for working with the clergy and faithful of the diocese as bishop. The Scriptures are an excellent source for us to look to what a bishop is and what he does. St. Paul refers to bishops in his letters, particularly to St. Timothy and St. Titus, both bishops. In his first letter to St. Timothy he writes specifically to St. Timothy but his words apply to any bishop, set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Practice these duties; devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. Take heed to yourself and to your teaching; hold to that, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers. (1 Timothy 4:12-16) In his second letter, St. Paul continues in how St. Timothy (and any bishop) should live, Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth And the Lord s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to everyone, an apt teacher, forbearing, correcting his opponents with gentleness. (2 Timothy 2:15, 24-25) He continues in words that resonate for every member of the clergy, preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (2 Timothy 4:2, 5) In writing to St. Titus, St. Paul says, For a bishop, as God s steward, must be blameless; he must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of goodness, master of himself, upright, holy, and self-controlled; he must hold firm to the sure word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to confute those who contradict it. (Titus 1:7-9) From these words of St. Paul we see that a bishop is not the CEO of a corporation but is the father, shepherd, and teacher of the flock entrusted to his care. He must teach by his example and rightly teach the word of God s truth. He will have to render an account for his flock to the Lord. These are tremendous responsibilities that require his cooperation with God s grace. Our expectations for a bishop must be measured against what the Church teaches us a bishop is and does. Having looked at some of the responsibilities of a bishop let us look to our expectations for the Congress- Sobor. The question comes to each person who has formed a view on who our episcopal nominee should be: suppose the candidate I want to see elected is not nominated? There have been several examples of this. On November 15, 2008 the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh met in special assembly to nominate a candidate for bishop. Their three candidates were Archimandrite Melchisedek (Pleska), Fr. David Mahaffey and Fr. Juvenaly (Repass). It was Archimandrite Melchisedek who was nominated to be bishop. He was subsequently canonically elected Bishop of Pittsburgh by the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America at its spring session on April 2, He was consecrated Bishop of Pittsburgh on June 27, I am sure there were delegates at that special assembly who were disappointed. However, the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh united around their nominee who is now their bishop. Clergy and faithful in Pittsburgh knew that they must work together with whomever was nominated to be Bishop. That is the case for us as a Diocesan Church. Clergy and faithful must work together with the chief shepherd of our Diocese, whichever of the two candidates it may be. Some of us may be disappointed. Yet our work as a Diocesan Church continues in proclaiming the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. We must offer up prayers for our episcopal nominee that the Holy Spirit may come upon him and guide him in the work that will lay ahead as the Bishop of our Diocese. With love in the Christ,
