1 A monthly newsletter for members and friends of First Baptist Church of Painesville - November 2017 Church Link FROM THE PASTORS DESK Each one Reach One Every time I look at the banner that hangs in the sanctuary of our Church it reminds me of an event recorded in the book of Acts concerning the early Church. in Acts 5:12-16, the Church was like a wildfire spreading through Jerusalem and the surrounding towns. People from all over the area were coming to be healed by the miraculous signs and wonders God was performing through the apostles of Christ. As the Church gathered in the temple, more and more believers were added to the Lord. However, when everything was going so well, trouble came (vv ). The high priest and Sadducess became jealous, arrested the apostles, and put them in the public prison. The Lord turned the situation around by sending an angel to open the prison doors and bring them out (vv.19-25). He told them to go back to the temple and keep speaking to people about Jesus. The religious leaders couldn t keep Jesus in the grave, and now they couldn t even keep His disciples in jail. Instead of being silenced, they were ablaze with the Spirit and setting Jerusalem on fire with their preaching. But it wasn t long before the apostles were brought back to stand before the council and commanded not to teach in Jesus` name (vv.26-28). Not much has changed since then. Today we can talk about God or a higher power with no problem, but if the name of Jesus comes up, everything hits the fan. Despite the danger the apostles were facing, they answered, We must obey God rather than men (v.29). But you might say, how does this story relate to us in our culture and country. Here in America, we might face intimidation but not incarceration and persecution. We have little to fear, yet we are much more reluctant to speak about Christ. I believe this is because our blessings have robbed us of our boldness. (Continued on next page.)

To recover our bold witness, we must remember who Jesus is, He is our Leader and Savior (v.31). unlike a human leader, Jesus is strong enough to take down any foe and powerful enough to come back from the dead and live forevermore. As our Savior, He can forever rescue us from sin and give us peace. We need to remember what Jesus does. He alone has provided the two things we need to be right with God repentance and forgiveness of sins. Knowing that salvation is only possible through Him should motivate us to stand up and speak for Christ when the world tries to intimidate us into sitting down and shutting up. When we have a burning love for Jesus Christ, we cannot help but let people feel the heat and see the light. And if we face ridicule or discrimination, we can rejoice that we were counted worthy to suffer for the One whose name is above every name, the name of Jesus. Hosanna Circle Nine Hosanna Circle Sisters met October 2, 2017 at the home of Jacquie Wolf. We each shared our fondest memory of autumn. We sang, shared thoughts, scriptures, poems; and heard words of John Keble before praying: Only O Lord, in Thy dear love, fit us for perfect rest above; and help us this day and every day, to live more nearly as we pray. Our prayer list for family members and friends was long and each was remembered by sisters praying. November 30, 2017 is our next responsibility to furnish food for Project Hope. Sisters volunteered, and each area is covered, to once again serve 40 people. Jacquie introduced the Ministry Focus: Feel as we focus on ways God is at work in us and through us. We hope to feel God more deeply in our lives. Our next meeting is November 6, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the church. We welcome women who would like to join our Circle of Sisters. 4 Thanksgiving Baskets FBCP will be collecting food to put together Thanksgiving baskets for members of our congregation again this year. If you attend FBCP, are in need of some help in preparing your Thanksgiving meal, and would like a basket, please contact Wendy Fredebaugh or call the office. As a congregation, we are grateful that we can share our abundance with our brothers and sisters in need. In November, there will be a sign-up sheet on the table in the foyer for suggested food items needed to fill food baskets. Please jot down your name and the amount of each item you will give and bring your donations no later than Sunday, Nov. 19. Thank you!. Poinsettias If you are interested in purchasing a Poinsettia which will decorate the sanctuary this Christmas season, please complete the form below and give it along with your payment of $5.50 per plant to Wendy Fredebaugh or Sandy Namestnik by November 19. 5 Wednesday Bible Study/Prayer Come at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday and join in with others who are seeking God s face, praising Him, and then interceding on behalf of others. We are currently studying the book of Romans. We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties. A big THANK YOU We are grateful for your food donations. In September we helped 6 families with food. Please check the expiration dates before bringing your donations to the church and give only items which have not expired, please.
