2 FROM FATHER S DESK Dear faithful and friends of St. Nicholas, What one of us as a child didn t wonder what we were going to be when we grew up? Whether we would be a fireman, a policeman, a doctor, a lawyer, a chef, an airplane pilot. The answers are limited only by a child s imagination. Then, we grow up and find our calling in life, whatever it may be. But have any of us ever said, when I grow up, I want to be a saint. It s not a vocation that I ve ever heard given by a child. But it is a vocation that should be of more than passing interest to us. The saints are those who enjoy the blessedness of being in God s presence eternally. They ran the race of this life, they fought the good fight, and they have received their reward: crowns of victory in the kingdom of heaven. We can look at the church calendar and see the names of these saints and we can read their life stories. And in the epistle for the first Sunday after Pentecost this month we read of some of the saints and what they did. Gideon and Barak, Samson, David and Samuel. They did great things: subduing kingdoms, stopping the mouths of lions, quenching fire, bringing the dead to life. And we might wonder if we have the mettle which they had, if we can become saints like they were. The saints, however, are not limited to those that find themselves on the church calendar. They are not limited only to those who have performed great miracles or done wondrous deeds. As we celebrate the feast of All Saints on June 7, the first Sunday after Pentecost, we remember those saints whom we publicly commemorate as well as those who are known but to God. We remember the pious men, women and children who lived quiet and holy lives. Who didn t turn armies to flight, who weren t tortured or martyred. But who persisted, day by day, and year by year in their living the gospel of Christ. Living in peace with others, praying, aiding those in need, comforting those who sorrowed and instructing the ignorant. By this quiet, unassuming way, these have entered into the kingdom of heaven. And what makes saints, those we know and those we do not know, is the power of the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the feast of All Saints one week after Pentecost because it is by the presence of the Holy Spirit in us that we are able to do the good things our heavenly Father calls us to do. By His presence the men and women of the Old and New Testament, the martyrs and monastics, were able to acquire the virtues, to advance in holiness, and to be granted a place with the righteous. And this, too, is our calling. We are to grow up to be saints. It is a vocation not only for the holy person living out in the desert but it is a vocation for each one of us. For those of us who are married, for those of us who are single, widows or widowers. For us who are children and for us who are adults. The vocation of sainthood is for each of us. And we will attain it if we follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If we set ourselves to do the best we can at our work and in our home. To pray, to work, to believe, to hope, and to love. Then we will hear the words of our Savior, Well done, good and faithful servant, because you have been faithful in small things, I will set you over many. Come, enter into your Master s joy. With love in Christ

He was of the Tribe of Simeon from the town of Bethsaida. He was a fisherman and, at first, was called Simon but the Lord was pleased to call him Cephas or Peter: "And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, He said, You are Simon the son of Jonah: you shall be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, a rock" (St. John 1:42). He was the first of the disciples to clearly express faith in the Lord Jesus saying: "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (St. Matthew 16:16). His love for the Lord was great and his faith in the Lord gradually strengthened. When the Lord was brought to trial, Peter denied Him three times but after only one glance into the face of the Lord, Peter's soul was filled with shame and repentance. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Peter appears as a fearless and powerful preacher of the Gospel. Following one of his sermons in Jerusalem, threethousand souls converted to the Faith. He preached the Gospel throughout Palestine and Asia Minor, throughout Illyria and Italy. Peter worked many powerful miracles; he healed the sick, resurrected the dead; the sick were healed even from his shadow. He had a great struggle with Simon the Magician who proclaimed himself as god but in reality Simon was a servant of Satan. Finally, Peter shamed and defeated him. By order of the evil Emperor Nero, Simon's friend, Peter was condemned to death. Installing Linus as Bishop of Rome, counseling and comforting the flock of Christ, Peter proceeded joyfully to his death. Seeing the cross before him, he begged his executioners to crucify him upside down for he considered himself unworthy to die as did his Lord. Thus the great servant of the Great Lord reposed and received the wreath of eternal glory. THE APOSTLE PAUL Paul was born in Tarsus of the tribe of Benjamin. At first, he was called Saul, studied under Gamaliel, was a Pharisee and a persecutor of Christianity. He was miraculously converted to the Christian Faith by the Lord Himself Who appeared to him on the road to Damascus. He was baptized by the Apostle Ananias, was called Paul and numbered in the service of the great apostles. With a fiery zeal, Paul preached the Gospel everywhere from the borders of Arabia to Spain, among the Jews and among the Gentiles. He received the title "Apostle to the Gentiles." As horrible as his sufferings were, so much more was his super human patience. Throughout all the years of his preaching Paul, from day to day, hung as one on a weak thread between life and death. Since he fulfilled all days and nights with labor and suffering for Christ, since he organized the Church in many places and since he attained such a degree of perfection he was able to say: "It is now no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). Paul was beheaded in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero at the same time as the Apostle Peter. From the Prologue from Ochrid by St. Nikolai of Zhicha
