3 MANY THANKS Many thanks to all who fulfilled their particular assignments during Holy Week and Pascha. May God repay the generosity of all those who offered their sincere gifts to the Lord at Pascha. Many thanks to those who assisted in preparing the palms and pussywillows and who stayed after Holy Week services to prepare the church for services on the next day. We thank the choir, under the direction of Choir Director J. Joseph Tome, for lifting up our hearts and minds during the services of Great and Holy Friday evening and Pascha with their singing. Many thanks to Reader Fred Paul for leading the responses for our services for Lazarus Saturday, Holy Week, Paschal Vespers, and Bright Week. We thank the St. Catherine s League for preparing the Easter baskets for the sick and shut-ins. We thank St. Juliana s Guild for coloring the red paschal eggs. We thank all the wonderful bakers who helped make the traditional ethnic goods at church (zelnick, sweet bread, and piroshky,) and at home for another successful Palm Sunday Bake Sale. We thank God for a wonderful and cooperative parish family. ORTHODOX BOOK CLUB will meet on Thursday, May 7 at 7:00 pm at St. George Church. The next book will be a book about the life of St. John of San Francisco a contemporary saint on our church. 4 CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS GRADUATES We would like to have a list of all of our Graduates for the June bulletin. Please, call the parish office at , with the following information. 1. Graduates name 2. Name of parents and grandparents 3. Name of High School. 4. Name of college they will be attending in the fall. 5. If they graduated with honors. COMING EVENTS Parish Festival will be held on Sunday, July 19 from Noon until Dark. The SKIMOS band from Ft. Wayne will be playing this year. COMING EVENTS VISITATIONS TO THE SICK Please inform Fr. Matthew about any sick members of our parish. Please remember that most hospitals do not inform parishes about the sick. Father Matthew brings Holy Communion every week. If you would like to be added to his scheduled visits, please call the office. Remember that we pray for all the sick at every Divine Liturgy. PARISH PRIDE PROJECT UPDATE The total donations to the Parish Pride Project now total $46, of that amount; $22, has been spent for the handicap restroom project. There is now $23, left in the Parish Pride fund for the other projects that need to be done: new sign, external beautification and furnaces. We still need $53, to meet our goal of $100,000 for the all the Parish Pride projects. Please be generous in supporting our parish. HANDICAP RESTROOM is now complete. Thank you to Luba Stevens who gave so generously to make this project a reality. Thank you to everyone that also contributed. We would like to thank Bill Economou and Deacon Kerry Gonser for their endless hours and hard work here at church to finish this project. The restrooms look great. We too would like to thank John Zelenko and Stojan Prusac for their help with the project. We couldn t have done it without you. 5 FROM FATHER S DESK Dearly beloved in Christ, Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen! Христос воскресе! Воистинну воскресе! Χριστος νεστη! Αλιθος νεστη! Hristos a-înviat! Adevărat a-înviat! On the first Sunday of this month we remember in a special way the women who followed Jesus throughout his earthly ministry, but especially through His passion and death. Looking at the four gospels we learn the names of these seven women we honor: Mary Magdalene, Salome, the Mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Mary, the Mother of James and Joses, the wife of Cleophas, Joanna, the wife of Chuza, steward of King Herod Antipas, Susanna, Mary and Martha the sisters of Lazarus. These women supported Jesus as he preached and taught the people about the kingdom of God. The women followed Jesus both in the easy days and in the most difficult ones. They were with Him when he left Galilee, when he preached in Jerusalem. They were there at His triumphal entrance into the Holy City. And they were there when he carried His cross. They were there as He hung upon the cross, and when His lifeless body was taken down. They were there at His burial. These seven women remained faithful to Jesus throughout His earthly ministry. These holy women are an example to us of devotion. The myrrhbearers kept faith during the Lord s passion. Witnessing all that happened to Jesus they did not abandon him. They did not give up hope. It would have been easy to give up: Jesus was betrayed, crucified and died. What could they hope for? Upon him they had pinned their hopes and their lives. Now he was dead. How great must have been their sorrow? How deeply must their hearts have been wounded? Still, they did not abandon Jesus, not even in death. Rather, they clung the more closely to him. It was they who went to go and anoint the Lord s body at the tomb on the first day of the week. For their faithfulness in what may appear to be a small thing, they were given the awesome and joyous treasure of the angel s words: He has risen, he is not here go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." Not to Peter and the other disciples, but to these women was the message of the resurrection entrusted. From the women, we, too, have receive this message of rejoicing and mercy. It is for us a promise that Jesus has overcome death and sin by His own death and resurrection. Devoted service to the Lord Jesus is the expectation for all of His disciples, for you and for me. And there will be times when we, like the myrrhbearers, will struggle with times of crisis and sorrow. The question for us is the same: do we abandon the Lord in these times or because of them? We need only look to these women for the answer. Instead we cling even more closely to Him. We prostrate ourselves before Him and with tears and sorrow asks for His help, His mercy, and His abiding presence within us. We do this in the true hope that even in apparent defeat, victory can bud forth. That our sorrow is to be viewed with the Resurrection as the overarching background which is always present, in good times or in bad times. And that in all times we draw the same courage, hope, and promise as did the women when they first heard the words: He is not here. Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen! Father Matthew
