2 n today's Gospel reading we learn a valuable lesson. Our salvation is not only dependent on what we do during this life, but also on what we do not do. We can be members in good standing of our parish; we can come to church regularly, serve on committees, and so on. However, if we don't take care of the basic needs of our brothers and sisters even ignoring their suffering our souls are in danger. The name of the rich man in today's reading is not mentioned. Perhaps he was just an illustration that the Lord used to prove a point, but it is possible that he was a real person. What we do know is that this person neglected a poor man just outside his front door choosing to fulfill his own needs to the extreme degree, rather than attend to the basic need of the poor man Lazarus. e all have our own Lazarus. There is someone or some situation in each of our lives where we know that we could do more; we know we should do more. Perhaps our conscience is pricked every time we ignore the situation or, even worse, we have ignored it so long that we have smothered our conscience and no longer feel it tugging on our hearts. May we always remember this rich man and the fate that awaited him, and choose to avoid imitating him in any way. May we all find the strength and courage to not ignore our Lazarus from this day forth. Fr. Joseph THANK YOU! to Father John and Drew Ramsey for co-chairing this year s Oktoberfest. Great fellowship and interesting discussions, combined with tasty brats and many varieties of beer, were the ingredients of this phenomenal evening. Thank you to all, who participated and once again making this event a total success! KNOWN TO BE ILL OR HOSPITALIZED: Anna Dillon at Southwest Hospital; Harvey Jackson at Cleveland Clinic. Please remember them in your prayers. NEWLY DEPARTED: Please remember in your prayers the newly departed handmaiden of God, Marie Gruber, age 100, who reposed in the Lord on October 15 and was buried from the Church on October 21. May the Kingdom of Heaven be hers! May her Memory be Eternal! PLEASE NOTE: Very Rev. Fr. John Memorich will be out of town Friday, October 21, through Sunday, October 23. In the event of emergency, please contact Fr. Joseph at FOLLOWERS AND COUNTING... Our following on Facebook & Twitter has increased to 125 people and counting. We hope to reach our Goal of 200 by the end of the year, so keep the likes coming. The Communications Committee has also started development on a St. Michael s Smartphone app that will be available on Android and IPhone devices. This will be a great tool for our parishioners to keep up to date with church activities, clubs, and prayer ministries, as well as getting quick access to daily readings, Saint of the day history, services and fasting schedules. Stay tuned for more to come Nick Kormos 2
3 Q: Concerning the recent controversy regarding one of the Republican candidates for president, does the Orthodox Church regard Mormons as Christians? A: This is a somewhat difficult question to answer, given the syncretistic nature of our society. Although Mormons acknowledge Jesus as a son of God, they do not believe in Him as THE Son of God the way we do. In fact, it is only recently that the Church of Later-Day Saints has begun using the term Christian when describing themselves. Because Mormons do not profess Christ and the Holy Trinity in the same way that the early Church did; because they have reinterpreted both the Old and New Testament to fit their own belief system; because they have forsaken the teachings of the Apostles, Church Fathers, and Nicean Creed; and because they have a whole other book of so-called scripture other than the Bible, the Church of Later-Day Saints cannot be truly termed a Christian Church. The Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church both agree that the Mormons are apostates (heretics) and are more of a cult than anything else. Now, this is not to say that Mormons are not moral, nice, or even decent people. They just do not have the true profession of faith as to who Jesus Christ actually is and are, thus, far outside the Communion of the Christian Faith. Fr. John ANNUAL CLEVELAND R CLUB POTLUCK AND ELECTION of officers is on Tuesday, November 1, at 6:15 p.m., in the Upper Level at Woodside.
