St. Jude 1:20 JULY & AUGUST 2018 ELDER AIMILIANOS OF SIMONOPETRA If today we ourselves are not suffering, let us not forget that in all likelihood things will be different tomorrow. More importantly, right now, all around us, countless friends, loved ones, relatives and acquaintances are suffering, and they are, and never cease to be, the members of our own body (cf. 1 Cor 12:12). Let us pray for them with the words of this psalm and with similar words. And even though some of us may not seem to be suffering today, the deeper truth is that we are always suffering. Our struggle to live virtuously is itself a source of pain. Satan, like a roaring lion (1 Pet 5:8), like a lion s whelp that lurks in secret places (Ps 17:12), waits for an opportunity to ensnare us in temptations. Our friendships and our loves can likewise be the cause of much pain and suffering. In the end, we can say that our whole life is a passion play, a history of extended suffering. However, let us not lose sight of the deeper meaning offered to us by the psalmist. Pain, difficulties, misfortunes, and suffering in general are the signs of divine visitation. Those who suffer are the special children of God. And so when our life is untroubled and things seem to be going well, we should stop and ask ourselves if we have not somehow moved away from God, because it is precisely suffering that constitutes our glory, our crown. 2 FROM FATHER S DESK Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, When you look at our 2018 parish calendar, in addition to the photos of churches in the Orthodox Church in America, you will read every month a quotation from our Archbishop Alexander taken from his book The Living Witness of the Holy Mountain: Contemporary Voices from Mount Athos. The book has been out of print but St. Tikhon s Seminary Press, the original publisher, has republished the book which is now available through their website: life/the-living-witness-of-the-holy-mountain-contemporary-voices-from- mount-athos/ From the detailed description at St. Tikhon s Seminary Press website: From as early as the ninth century, Mount Athos a monastic republic situated on a peninsula in northern Greece extending some 35 miles into the Aegean Sea has been a monastic center and a spiritual beacon of the Orthodox world. As the present collection of essays, sermons, narratives, and apophthegmata (sayings) shows, the significance of the work of the monks who come to Athos to devote themselves to God continues undiminished, as does the vitality of their contribution to the spiritual life of Orthodoxy worldwide. In these pages we see the simplicity and truth of the Gospel reflected in anecdotes of contemporary Fathers of the Holy Mountain; we read of the connection between the light of Christ s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and Orthodox monastic spirituality; we learn how St. Herman of Alaska, America s first Orthodox saint, was a kind of gift to America from Athos. Several writings by Archimandrite Aemilianos (Vapheides), Abbot of Simonos Petras Monastery on Mount Athos, set forth the critical importance of the spiritual father and the Jesus prayer in an Orthodox monastery, and the link between monasticism and martyrdom. A leading French Catholic scholar recounts in detail his path to Orthodoxy over a span of many years. Also included is the Tomos of Mount Athos in Defense of the Holy Hesychasts an important Orthodox doctrinal document, written in the fourteenth century by St. Gregory Palamas and signed by the elders of the Holy Mountain. These writings, together with the others in this volume, have all been written by Athonite monks. All but one of them appears in English for the first time, translated by His Eminence, Archbishop Alexander (Golitzin), who contributes, in his illuminating Introduction, an examination of Athonite history, organization, and daily life. (Originally Printed in 1994 by St. Tikhon s Seminary Press) This book is an enlightening read which I have read twice: when I first bought it and in anticipation of the trip to Mount Athos in January. It is an enlightening book that further opens up to us the path of every Christian: Christ living in us and we living in Christ. With love in Christ,

Angelo and Presvytera Teri Mago (Maggos) are being transferred by Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Rochester, NY effective July 1. Fr. Angelo will be at our Pan-Orthodox Vespers and Liturgy for the feast of Ss Peter and Paul on Thursday, June 28 at 6 pm at St. George. God grant him and Presvytera Teri many years! COFFEE HOUR volunteers are needed. There is a sign-up list outside of the kitchen. Please commit to helping out so that we can continue having this social time together. MEMORY ETERNAL! CHRIST IS RISEN! Violet Economou, mother of Bill Economou, fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, May 6 in Florida. God grant her rest among the saints. Bog da prosti. Christ is risen! Peter Brayan fell asleep in the Lord on Monday, June 4. Funeral was from church on June 22 and interment at Sunset Hills Cemetery. God grant him rest among the saints and comfort to his family. Bog da prosti. Christ is risen! DIOCESAN ASSESSMENT You will find in your box of offering envelopes one marked Diocesan Assessment. Each parish in the Diocese is assessed $35 per pledging adult. We have been paying this directly out of our Sunday offerings, presently $5,320 per year. If every adult will make the $35 assessment above and beyond their regular pledge, our parish will save $5,320 per year. If you have not yet turned in your envelope, please do so as soon as possible. July August September HOPE IN A BOX Toilet Paper Feminine Care Products/Razors & Shaving Cream Toothpaste/Tooth brushes PARKING LOT RE-PAVING The proceeds from last year and this year s Macedonian Open will go towards the re-paving of the entire parking lot which will cost over $100,000. With capital improvement funds and other funds on hand, that leaves a shortfall of $35,000. If anyone would like to donate or dedicate a memorial fund or make an anonymous donation, please contact the office. If we do not raise the rest of the funds, we will be required to take a loan in order to complete the project. GRADUATIONS Jacob Beslac, son of Rade Beslac & Jessica Tucker graduated from Swartz Creek High School with honors. He will be attending Central MI University in the fall. Katelyn Price, daughter of Ian & Stephanie Price, graduated from Milford High School with honors.
