2 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, ND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Tone 5. Holy Wonderworkers and Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian of Mesopotamia, and their mother, St. Theodota. Hieromartyrs John the Bishop and Jacob (James) the Presbyter, of Persia (ca. 345). Martyrs Cyrenia and Juliana in Cilicia (4th c.). Martyr Hermenegild the Goth of Spain (586). Martyrs Cæsarius, Dacius, Sabbas, Sabinian, Agrippa, Adrian, and Thomas, at Damascus (7th c.). Monk Martyrs Jacob, Jacob the Deacon, and Dionysius, of Prodromou (Mt. Athos 1520). TROPARIA (Tone 5) Let us, the faithful, praise and worship the Word, co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born for our salvation from the Virgin; for He willed to be lifted up on the Cross in the flesh, to endure death, and to raise the dead// by His glorious Resurrection. (Tone 8) Holy unmercenaries and wonderworkers, Cosmas and Damian, heal our infirmities. Freely you have received; freely you give to us. (Tone 4) In truth you were revealed to your flock as a rule of faith, a model of meekness, and teacher of abstinence, so you won the heights by humility, and riches by poverty, O Holy Father Nicholas, intercede with Christ God to save our souls. KONTAKION (Tone 6) Protection of Christians never failing, Mediatress before the Creator, ever constant. Do not despise the voice of prayer of sinners, but in your goodness come to help us who faithfully call upon you. Hasten to entreat, hurry to pray, O Theotokos, interceding always for those honor you. The Prokeimenon in the Fourth Tone: To the saints who are in His earth, / the Lord hath revealed the wonders of all His will in them. v. I saw the Lord continually before me; for He is at my right hand, that I not be moved. THE FIRST EPISTLE OF THE HOLY APOSTLE PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (12:27-13:8) Brethren: you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. Alleluia, Tone 5 v: I will sing of Thy mercies, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim Thy truth from generation to generation. v: For Thou hast said: Mercy will be established forever; Thy truth will be prepared in the heavens.

3 THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAINT LUKE (16:19-31) At that time Jesus said to His disciples: There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he called out, `Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us. And he said, Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment. But Abraham said, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent. He said to him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead. COMMUNION HYMN Praise the Lord from the heavens! Praise Him in the highest! Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Facing Forward Part 2: Personal considerations in Orthodox Evangelization (continued from last week) 4. Beware of the Spiral of Silence. Today, we generally don t ask others where they happen to be in terms of their lived relationship with God, inasmuch as many would consider this to be intrusive and/or judgmental, or see it as an attempt to impose one s faith upon another person. Sadly, we have been conditioned to believe that people deserve to be left alone, so we don t share our faith or ask others about theirs. Yet that same person may be someone who happens to be facing extraordinarily trying issues and situations the type that require God s help and grace. Showing your concern as a Christian can be important to those facing such issues. Your invitation can assist them in coping with their circumstances through the grace of God and the fellowship of the Church. Pray to discern when to remain silent, but also when to speak up. 5. You almost always need to use words. Many are familiar with the quote, preach the Gospel and, when necessary, use words. The most effective evangelization approach is living a life that shines with and reflects the Light of Christ. Practically speaking, however, when introducing others to the Gospel, words are necessary. They help to indicate that you care. They help convey an understanding of the other person s needs, hopes, fears and aspirations. They help to express the hope that is in you [1 Peter 3:15] what you believe and why you believe it. According to Michael Green, author of Evangelization in the Early Church, the approach used by the apostles to evangelize included a combination of life and lip that is, behavior and belief. 6. Network of communication. The single most comprehensive contemporary lesson in how to evangelize effectively in your parish comes from the Gospel reading of the First Sunday of Great Lent John 1:35ff. In this account, Jesus told Andrew and another man to come and see, and they did. Because it was important, Andrew went and found his brother Simon Peter and brought him to Jesus. Jesus told Philip, follow me. And he did. Because it was important, Philip went and found his friend Nathanael and told him, and Nathanael came to Jesus. Potential members of the Body of Christ are likely to come from within the network of those you already know, since you are more likely to have an open and trusting relationship with them. Prepare them to be evangelized by your behavior and general relationship. Discern when they may be ready to extend the invitation to come and see.
