4 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH October 19, 2014 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Saturday, October 25; 11:30am Calling All Boys and Girls 4th grade and older who have received First Eucharist All current and aspiring Altar Servers are asked to attend training on Saturday, October 25. Invite a friend to join you. Lunch will be provided by the Knights of Columbus followed by training. HE ALONE IS LORD In the scriptures, being anointed usually meant you were a prophet or king of Israel. Anointing was a sign that God had chosen you for that job. But it was almost unheard of to call a king from another country anointed. So why is Cyrus given that title? Cyrus was king of Persia when the Babylonians held the people of Israel captive. God used him to defeat the Babylonians and eventually bring the Israelites back to their homes. In our first reading, we hear the Lord's words to Cyrus about God's plan for Israel. Notice that God is in charge: telling Cyrus what God will do, making other kings run from him, opening doors or gates that might have blocked Cyrus' armies--all for a king who doesn't even know God. Cyrus only knew the Persian gods. That is why the reading says several times that there is no God but the LORD. One thing this tells us is that God can work through anyone, not just saints and religious. Any time someone does a good deed, God is behind it. Just as God used Cyrus to free the Israelites from their Babylonian captivity, God can use governments to protect the poor, to help rebuild after disasters, or to defend freedom. In that sense, we can understand what Jesus says about payment to Caesar and to God. Since everything belongs to God, that should be our first allegiance. When a government does not protect the weakest or the rights of the poor, it should be accountable. But when God works through governments, we can give some support to them by such activities as voting, or paying taxes. Let us ask God to work through us also, helping us to proclaim that God alone is LORD. CLERGY APPRECIATION At Holy Trinity we are very blessed to have Fr. Kizito, Deacon Jerry, and Deacon Mike. Please thank them for their service to the Church and Holy Trinity throughout the month of October. Thank you to all who donated to the Baby Product Drive; your donations are much appreciated! 7 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH October 19, 2014 YEAR FOR MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Because the Lord is the God of our ancestors, we want to strengthen the relationships between our family s generations. For the Christian community the family is the daily fabric of life. It is the journey of generations who pass on the faith together with love and with basic moral values. It is concrete solidarity, effort, patience, and also hope for the future. All this which the Christian community lives out in the light of faith, hope, and charity should never be kept to oneself, but must become the leaven in the dough of the whole society for its greater common good. The memory of our elderly people sustains us as we journey on. The future of society is rooted in the elderly and in the young: the latter because they have the strength and are of the age to carry history ahead; the former because they are a living memory. Meditation: What virtue seems to be particularly strong in our family: faith, hope or charity? St. Michael Catholic Church will hold their annual Bazaar and Turkey Dinner on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at the Calhan School Big Gym at 800 Bulldog St., Calhan from 11am to 2pm. We will be serving a home-style turkey and ham dinner. Cost is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 60 and over and $5 for children ages 7 to 13. Among the special events will be kid s games, face painting, a country store, door prizes and our auction. For more information contact Kristin Scott at OCTOBER DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH October 1 through October 31 there will be a devotion to St. Joseph Monday through Friday at 6:30pm; on Saturdays prior to the Vigil Mass; and Sundays before the 10:30am Mass.
