Our RCIA program offers the opportunity to learn about the Church s beliefs, Biblical foundations, and beauty as well as her 2000-year-old history, traditions, and practices. Our classes focus on the teaching of the Church and the experience of being Catholic. They will prepare you to enter the Church at Easter, when we celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. 6 Ralph McCloud, CCHD Director, Speaks at local event on September 15. Speaking at the Catholic Social Action Gathering at St. Peter Catholic Church, Ralph McCloud will address issues of poverty and efforts that are working to break the cycle in the United States today. He has been the Director for the national Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), an antipoverty program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, for nine years. CCHD seeks to address poverty by grass roots organizing, economic development and transformational education. It distributes around 11 million dollars annually for low income community organizations and for economic development around the country. Prior to working with the USCCB, Mr. McCloud worked as a leader in ministry for the underserved and also in civic engagement. He was Director of Pastoral and Community Services for the Diocese of Fort Worth, was also Director of African Ministry there, and served as President of the National Association of Black Catholic Administrators and on the board of National Black Catholic Congress. Civically, Mr., McCloud served four terms on the Fort Worth City Council from and 3 terms as Mayor Pro Tempore for a city with a population of 750,000. He worked tirelessly to improve the plight of low income communities that he represented and was seen as a respected advocate for low income communities and improving the plight of the poor. After retiring from the council, he was selected to Chair the County s first Homeless Commission and was awarded the first Racial Reconciliation Award from the Tarrant Area Community of Churches. In an interview for this article, Mr. McCloud spoke about homelessness and lack of affordable housing, mentioning that they are on the rise in our cities. Mr. McCloud attributes this to high rates of gentrification and people abandoning rural communities in search of needed services such as grocery stores, employment, educational opportunity, to name a few. He notes that wages have been stagnant for decades despite the fact that unemployment is down, and that many families have two jobs or more, causing family dysfunction. Adding to these phenomena, Mr. McCloud said, Lack of opportunity plagues urban communities as violence and strife creates a never ending cycle of poverty, family abuse, youth gang activity, community despair and overall disinvestment. Incarceration rates are down and declining but ex-offenders are often released into under-resourced areas where opportunity is lacking and possibility of reoffending prevails. The work of CCHD is aimed at supporting projects that bring tools to the table for people to change their circumstances, from leadership skills, to self-advocacy. One organization in Chicago called Metropolitan Tenants Organization reversed unhealthy living conditions for families through tenant-landlord collaboration. We are delighted that Mr. McCloud will be sharing wisdom gained from his work through the years both on a national level and in local contexts.
